The linear sampling method (LSM) is a model based inverse scattering approach to image the shape of an unknown target, which does not require approximations and it is effective from a computational point of view. In particular, it provides quasi real-time images of even large regions, thus being very attractive for applications. On the downside, the LSM cannot be applied to traditional GPR multi-monostatic, or multi-bistatic configurations. This contribution considers the application of the LSM to mine clearance, taking advantage of an international research effort aimed at developing an integrated demining system, which will include a multi-view multi-static GPR device. However, the peculiar configuration adopted by the system is different from the canonical ones so far considered to validate LSM in subsurface imaging scenarios. As such, the feasibility of LSM in these working conditions has to be preliminary proved before tackling the experiments. To address this issue, we present the outcomes of a numerical study that demonstrates that LSM can be successfully applied to the forthcoming on-site demonstration.

Latent subcategory models (LSMs) offer significant improvements over training linear support vector machines (SVMs). Training LSMs is a challenging task due to the potentially large number of local optima in the objective function and the increased model complexity which requires large training set sizes. Often, larger datasets are available as a collection of heterogeneous datasets. However, previous work has highlighted the possible danger of simply training a model from the combined datasets, due to the presence of bias. In this paper, we present a model which jointly learns an LSM for each dataset as well as a compound LSM. The method provides a means to borrow statistical strength from the datasets while reducing their inherent bias. In experiments we demonstrate that the compound LSM, when tested on PASCAL, LabelMe, Caltech101 and SUNO9 in a leave-one-dataset-out fashion, achieves an average improvement of over 6.5% over a previous SVM-based undoing bias approach and an average improvement of over 8.5% over a standard LSM trained on the concatenation of the datasets.

In this work we implemented matching of 3D surfaces, in particular, their registration in a common coordinate system. At the moment, in coordinate metrology there are different approaches for implementing matching of 3D point cloud data. LSM (Least Square Matching) is one of the most robust and applicable to a wide range of data types. However, there are only a few implementations in human body scanned samples. Matching needs to be used when we can not cover all the sample surface in one measurement or when the goal is to have more precise data from the object. In this work, we performed processing of point clouds from multi-view measurements: color 3D scanned data of the human body, with height accuracy of 0.5 mm RMS. We applied 3D LSM algorithm for this purpose. Our implementation is more precise (0.7 - 0.9 mm mean mismatch between the surfaces vs 1.5 mm in than in existing work, and involves downsampling as a tool for a better precision. This paper is organized in four sections: section 2 describes the main principles of LSM algorithm used. Section 3 presents the 3D scanner prototype, on which we acquired measurements. Finally, section 4 gives experimental results and section 5 briefly summarizes the conclusions of the work.

Impact of Using Near Real-Time Green Vegetation Fraction in Noah Land Surface Model of NOAA NCEP on Numerical Weather Predictions

Green vegetation fraction (GVF) is one of the input parameters of the Noah land surface model (LSM) that is the land component of a number of operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) of NOAA. The Noah LSM in current NCEP operational NWP models has been using static multiyear averages of monthly GVF derived from satellite observations of NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) normalized difference vegetation index. The multiyear averages of GVF are evidently not the representative of actual conditions of the land surface vegetation cover. (is study used a near-real-time (NRT) GVF data set generated from the 8-day composite of the leaf area index product from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to assess the impact of NRT GVF on off-line Noah LSM simulations and NWP forecast model. Simulations of the off-line Noah LSM in the Land Information System (LIS) and weather forecasts of the NASA-Unified Weather and Research Forecasting (NUWRF) were obtained using either the static multiyear average AVHRR GVF data set or the NRT MODIS GVF while meteorological forcing data and other settings were kept the same. The off-line simulations and WRF forecasts were then compared against in situ measurements or reanalysis products to assess the impact of using NRT GVF. Improvements of both soil moisture simulations as well as forecasts of 2-meter air temperature and humidity and precipitation from NUWRF were observed using the NRT GVF data products. The RMSE in SM estimates from the off-line Noah model is reduced by around 1.0% (1.41%) during the green-up phase and by 1.48% (2.24%) over the senescence phase for the surface (root zone) SM simulations. Around 82.3% validation sites (out of 1178 sites) showed positive impact on coupled WRF model with the insertion of NRT GVF.

Biomarkers of liver injury for hepatitis clinical trials: a meta-analysis of longitudinal studies

Background: Liver biopsy and virological end points are standard references for assessing the effect of viral hepatitis treatments. We aimed to review evidence-based published data of biomarkers that have been validated as non-invasive alternatives to biopsy as end points for HBV and HCV infection trials. Methods: Studies were included if there were at least two repeated estimates of fibrosis per patient using biomarkers with at least two studies and a control group. Meta-analysis of the percentage of fibrosis progression per year (pFPy) was performed. Results: Two biomarkers were included, FibroTest (R) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM;FibroScan (R)). A total of 1,413 patients with chronic hepatitis C (11 populations) and 772 with chronic hepatitis B (6 populations) were analysed. In a comparison of HCV patients with controls, the FibroTest (R) pFPy was -18% (95% confidence interval [CI] -23 - -14;P<0.001) in treated patients and the LSM pFPy was -15% (95% CI -28 - -1;P=0.01), both with differences according to virological responses. In HBV patients, there was a significant decrease of the pFPy only in patients with baseline advanced fibrosis (mean difference -5% [95% CI -10- -0.1], P=0.02). In patients with advanced fibrosis, stratified by virological response, there were similar differences between pFPy estimated either using FibroTest (R) or biopsy, both in HCV and HBV infections. Repeated LSM in HBV patients had an early variability related to nccroinflammatory activity. Conclusions: In patients with chionic hepatitis C and B, the treatment effect on fibrosis progression rate was similarly estimated using FibroTest (R) or biopsy. The same concordance was observed for FibroScan (R) but with a possible overestimation of the fibrosis regression during the first weeks of treatment.

This work discusses visible light laser voltage probing (VIS-LVP) and gallium phosphide solid immersion lens (GaP SIL) research for Integrated Circuit (IC) analysis at Technische Universitat Berlin. An overview of the challenges in connection with the ultra-precision fabrication of GaP SILs and their application is given. The use of visible light is not only opening a path for fault isolation in small geometry devices, but it also eases access to sensitive data in security relevant IC functions. As previous work has demonstrated that VIS-LVP can be realized with moderate effort, the question is raised if attackers are able to implement visible light attack techniques with moderate or even low cost. To this end, as a first step for attack risk evaluation, a visible light Laser Scanning Microscope (LSM) with a cost of less than 100 $ is presented. The current and future capabilities of such a setup are reviewed and relevant protection concepts are discussed.

We propose a framework of look-ahead dispatch which considers forecast uncertainty and infeasibility management. Two major advantages of the framework are demonstrated: 1) economic performance improvement under the presence of forecast uncertainty;and, 2)feasibility enhancement of the dispatch problem. In the look-ahead dispatch framework, a weighted predictive scheduling (WPS) technique is proposed to relieve the negative impacts on dispatch due to wind forecast uncertainty in future steps. Look-ahead security management (LSM) is introduced, which is a technique to identify and quantify potential infeasibility of the dispatch in advance. The LSM technique is shown to be capable of working out an optimal recovery plan for future violation of system security. Finally, the proposed techniques are illustrated in a modified 24 Bus Reliability Test System.

Generalized Gain Margin (GGM) has recently been introduced as a Gain Margin (GM) like stability metric for nonlinear systems to gauge its exponential stability margin for vanishing regular perturbations. This paper provides GGM assessment methods using Lyapunov's Second Method (LSM) for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems and Nonlinear Time-Invariant (NLTI) systems, which allows for time-varying gain perturbations. The effectiveness of the method is shown by two concrete examples. The results in this paper could also be extended to linear time-varying and nonlinear time-varying systems using Lyapunov functions for time-varying systems.

Connected vehicles extend the capability of information collection, and thus open more opportunities for innovative advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In this paper, we propose a Lane Speed Monitoring (LSM) application based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. This application takes advantage of Basic Safety Messages (BSM) transmitted from equipped vehicles via dedicated short range communication (DSRC), to estimate the real-time traffic states at the lane level. It then provides the driver with a recommendation on the optimal lane selection in terms of traffic conditions. A comprehensive simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the performance of this application, including safety, mobility, and environmental impacts, under various scenarios. Results indicate that the LSM application is beneficial to the individual user even under a low market penetration rate. Vehicles equipped with the application demonstrate up to 11% average speed improvement.

The Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) trading indicator is simple and has been widely used in financial markets to provide trading signals. The MACD-Histogram (MACDH) can be derived from MACD as a second-order trading signal of price actions. To reduce the lagging effects in MACD/MACDH, forecasted values are introduced in a hybrid trading signal, termed as the forecasted-MACDH (fMACDH). The forecasted values are predicted using an online neuro-fuzzy network called the Self-reorganizing Fuzzy Associative Machine (SeroFAM). SeroFAM was designed with both learning and unlearning capabilities in order to handle "shifts" and "drifts" occurring as stock market price fluctuations. A detailed trading simulation is performed for a single stock under a single long-short-MACD (LSM) parameter to explain the experimental design, and 5180 trading simulations were run for the top 10 largest stocks under 518 combinations of the LSM parameters to assess the robustness of the test cases. Comparative results are also provided.
