Finite model finders give users the ability to specify properties of a system in mathematical logic and then automatically find concrete examples, called solutions, that satisfy the properties. These solutions are often viewed as a key benefit of model finders, as they create an exploratory environment for developers to engage with their model. In practice, users find less benefit from these solutions than expected. For years, researchers believed that the problem was that too many solutions are produced. However, a recent user study found that users actually prefer enumerating a broad set of solutions. Inspired by a recent user study on Alloy, a modeling language backed by a finite model finder, we believe that the issue is that solutions are too removed from the logical constraints that generate them to help users build an understanding of the constraints themselves. In this paper, we outline a proof-of-concept for live programming of Alloy models in which writing the model and exploring solutions are intertwined. We highlight how this development environment enables more productive feedback loops between the developer, the model and the solutions.

live programming is usually considered beneficial for learners partly because it reduces the cost of experimentation, facilitating exploratory programming. In the past few decades, there has been a steady increase in the interest and subsequent adoption of visual programming environments and robotics kits specifically tailored for beginners. These tools, however, often lack live programming capabilities. To measure the impact of live programming and shorter feedback loops on educational robotics, we conducted a pilot study with high-school students using our own programming environment: Physical Bits. We developed two distinct configurations of the environment: one with live programming, monitoring, and debugging capabilities enabled and another with those features disabled. We used these two configurations to compare the performance of students during an introductory workshop on robotics. Our findings are consistent with similar studies on the matter: live programming can help students progress further, improve their efficiency, reduce the time required to solve each task, and increase the frequency in which the programs are tested on the robots.

Previous research on the effects of live program composition in computer science education has shown mixed results;while live programming is well-received by students and can improve the program composition process in some contexts, the resulting programs may be hard to understand, potentially making the paradigm unfeasible for collaborative and general-purpose programming. In this paper, we explore to what extent programs created in Algot, a live programming language, can be understood by tertiary-level students. We conducted an experimental, within-subjects study (n = 41) measuring how well students at this level could comprehend programs composed in Algot and Python. We asked our participants to explain the programs and answer questions on them related to tracing, reverse tracing, conceptual extrapolations, and (optionally) time complexity. Despite the participants' lack of familiarity with Algot, students performed better after viewing most programs in Algot than Python, but primarily for problems involving trees and matrices. Our results contribute to the body of research on live programming in computer science (CS) education and complement recent research on the benefits of Algot for program composition, suggesting that Algot can be useful as a more general learning resource in CS tertiary education.

AI-powered programming assistants are increasingly gaining popularity, with GitHub Copilot alone used by over a million developers worldwide. These tools are far from perfect, however, producing code suggestions that may be incorrect in subtle ways. As a result, developers face a new challenge: validating AI's suggestions. This paper explores whether live programming (LP), a continuous display of a program's runtime values, can help address this challenge. To answer this question, we built a Python editor that combines an AI-powered programming assistant with an existing LP environment. Using this environment in a between-subjects study (N = 17), we found that by lowering the cost of validation by execution, LP can mitigate over- and under-reliance on AI-generated programs and reduce the cognitive load of validation for certain types of tasks.

Debugging GUI applications is challenging because of the difficult-to-debug state changes caused by asynchronous event handling and user interactions. live programming, a paradigm where programmers continuously see real-time traces of every execution step as they edit the code, is promising for this context, as it automates the visualization of state changes upon inputs to the program. This paper explores how to design a live programming experience for debugging GUI applications and studies the effects of live programming in this context. Through a formative design exploration, we derive three core concepts for enabling live programming in debugging GUI applications: a UI states timeline, connections between the UI and the code, and automated event recording. We implemented these concepts in UNFOLD, a live programming environment for JavaScript-based GUI applications. A within-subject study with 12 participants shows that, with UNFOLD, participants locate bugs faster in tasks amenable to live programming, leverage liveness when debugging, and deem the tool helpful and easy to use.

Teaching computer science effectively in college settings presents several challenges, such as providing timely feedback, actively engaging students, and fostering an interactive learning environment. Traditional methods often lead to passive learning experiences and delayed feedback. This paper introduces an implementation of live programming using Visual Studio live Share at a community college. This tool creates a shared workspace for students and educators, facilitating real-time collaboration. Utilizing a peerled team learning (PLTL) model, the implementation focuses on Computer Science 1 (CS1) and Computer Science 2 (CS2) courses. The experiences of students and peer leaders are highlighted, along with the identification of emerging professional dispositions among students.

Source code is inherently abstract. While this is necessary to capture the generality of a program, it poses a barrier to understanding and learning to use the underlying concepts. In education, especially in abstract subjects like maths, the use of concrete examples is considered instrumental to the acquisition of knowledge and a frequently explored direction for teaching computational concepts. Besides concreteness, the importance of examples being close to their abstract descriptions as well as the immediacy of feedback has been highlighted. Babylonian programming (BP) is a type of example-based live programming that fulfills all three criteria by introducing concrete values, moving them as close as possible to the code, and updating them immediately in response to changes of either the example or the code. This makes BP a promising tool in education, yet no studies on the suitability of BP in a learning context have been conducted. Hence, we propose to (1.) investigate usability of state-of-the-art BP to minimize the friction of introducing BP in education, and (2.) measure the learning effectiveness and quality of experience of a BP environment in undergraduate software engineering education. For these studies, we will use the Smalltalk-based Babylonian/S as our environment. Besides clearer guidelines on the design of BP and example-based systems in general, we expect to shed light on the qualities that teacher-provided examples need to exhibit and the opportunities for learners to create their own examples during experimentation with unknown concepts.

Understanding and developing large applications often leads to a situation where the developer becomes lost. Software visualization aims to help with these problems by providing visual insights and helps to navigate, and, when properly done, also to visually model software. Although the advantages of virtual reality in software visualization have already been demonstrated, relatively limited research has been done in the area of programming. In this paper, we present a virtual reality programming environment, with built-in round-trip engineering support and runtime compilation of source code that allows live programming. The study carried out shows that users are capable of solving complex programming tasks in our VR environment, which performed better in terms of usability and user experience, but the evaluation results also point to still persistent VR related problems.

Novice programmers often struggle with code understanding and debugging. live programming environments visualize the runtime values of a program each time it is modified to provide immediate feedback, which help with tracing the program execution. This paper presents the use of a live programming tool in a CS1 course to better understand the impact of live programming on novices' learning metrics and their perceptions of the tool. We conducted a within-subjects study at a large public university in a CS1 course in Python (N=237) where students completed tasks in a lab setting, in some cases with a live programming environment, and in some cases without. Through post-lab surveys and open-ended feedback, we measured how well students understood the material and how students perceived the programming environment. To understand the impact of live programming, we compared the collected data for students who used live programming with the data for students who did not. We found that while learning outcomes were the same regardless of whether live programming was used or not, students who used the live programming tool completed some code tracing tasks faster. Furthermore, students liked the live programming environment more, and rated it as more helpful for their learning.
