Several studies provide the questions developers ask during software evolution tasks, providing foundations for subsequent work. Nevertheless, none of them focus on live programming environments that gain in popularity as they are perceived to have a positive effect on programming tasks. Studying the impact of a live programming environment on software development activities is thus the goal of this study. In a partial replication of the study by Sillito et al., we conducted 17 software evolution sessions in a live programming environment and report 1,161 developer questions asked during these sessions. We contrast our results with the results by Sillito et al., focusing on the question occurrences, question complexity and what information participants used to gain a required knowledge. We report eight new questions and observe that the live programming facilities do have an impact on the way developers ask questions about source code and use tools to gain corresponding knowledge.

This paper describes our experiences in building a live collaborative programming environment on top of the JavaScript version of the Croquet shared experience platform. Croquet provides a clean substrate for building real-time collaborative applications. We created an application framework that supports live programming, and used that framework to build the Greenlight collaborative application, then in turn, modified it to do live programming experiments. The environment allows multiple users to modify the running application from within, with changes taking effect immediately. The experiment was inspired by earlier work including Douglas Engelbart's oN-Line System (NLS) and the Kansas system in Self. Analogically, the system is like the Smalltalk environment made collaborative. In this paper we explain the Croquet architecture, its library and framework, and the Greenlight application used to make the live programming environment. Serious games for programming provide players with some type of algorithmic mechanics to accomplish game challenges. Such mechanics maybe formally algorithmic, or in some cases not theoretically linked to strict programming constructs, although still characterized as programming-related games. We discuss a serious game with visual programming where the primary mission is the development of a simple 2d game. Its primary novelty is the lack of separate build and run cycles. There is only one game mode, with gameplay and game development being inseparable, where every game object can be clicked, live-programmed, and live-edited during play. Additionally, time may be freely rewind and replayed, undoing or redoing internally all related user actions and game state updates. During such time travels, it is allowed to drop the entire history onwards, from any given point in time, and continue from there.

As physical computing devices proliferate, researchers and educators push to make them more engaging to learners. One approach is to make the act of programming them more interactive and responsive via live programming so that program edits are immediately reflected in the behavior of the physical device. To understand the impact of live programming on interactions with physical computing devices, we conducted a comparative study where children ages 11-15 programmed a BBC micro:bit device using either the MicroBlocks live programming environment or MakeCode, the micro:bit default environment. Results show that MicroBlocks users spent more time interacting directly with the physical device while showing different patterns of interaction compared to MakeCode users. We also found variations in the differences between environments related to activity structures. This paper contributes to the growing body of literature on how the design of interfaces like programming environments for physical computing devices shapes emerging interaction patterns.

A key argument in favor of live programming languages and environments is that a better programming experience is achieved through maximizing feedback to the programmer. Intuitively, this is a compelling argument, but looking at validations of live programming languages and environments, the results are not encouraging at all. This essay concerns the question whether it is possible to validate that live programming is faster, or more correct, or that programmers have a better development experience. I provide a critical review of validations of live programming and talk about my own experience with such a user study. The goal of this text is to contrast the intuition with the scientific validation, such that we, as a community, can ask ourselves the question of whether we can validate the arguments in favor of live programming, and if so, how.

live programming environments allow programmers to get feedback instantly while changing software. liveness is gaining attention among industrial and open-source communities;several IDEs offer high degrees of liveness. While several studies looked at how programmers work during software evolution tasks, none of them consider live environments. We conduct such a study based on an analysis of 17 programming sessions of practitioners using Pharo, a mature live programming environment. The study is complemented by a survey and subsequent analysis of 16 programming sessions in additional languages, e.g., JavaScript. We document the approaches taken by developers during their work. We find that some liveness features are extensively used, and have an impact on the way developers navigate source code and objects in their work.

Updating applications during their execution is used both in production to minimize application downtime and in integrated development envi- ronments to provide live programming support. Nevertheless, these two scenarios present diﬀerent challenges making Dynamic Software Update (DSU) solutions to be specifically designed for only one of these use cases. For example, DSUs for live programming typically do not implement safe point detection or instance migration, while production DSUs require man- ual generation of patches and lack IDE integration. These solutions also have a limited ability to update themselves or the language core libraries and some of them present execution penalties outside the update window. In this PhD, we propose a unified DSU named gDSU for both live pro- gramming and production environments. gDSU provides safe update point detection using call stack manipulation and a reusable instance migration mechanism to minimize manual intervention in patch generation. It also sup- ports updating the core language libraries as well as the update mechanism itself thanks to its incremental copy of the modified objects and its atomic commit operation. gDSU does not aﬀect the global performance of the application and it presents only a run-time penalty during the update window. For example, gDSU is able to apply an update impacting 100,000 instances in 1 second making the application not responsive for only 250 milliseconds. The rest of the time the application runs normally while gDSU is looking for a safe update point during which modified elements will be copied. We also present extensions of gDSU to support transactional live pro- gramming and atomic automatic refactorings which increase the usability of live programming environments.

live programming environments aim to provide programmers (and sometimes audiences) with continuous feedback about a program's dynamic behavior as it is being edited. The problem is that programming languages typically assign dynamic meaning only to programs that are complete, i.e. syntactically well-formed and free of type errors. Consequently, live feedback presented to the programmer exhibits temporal or perceptive gaps. This paper confronts this "gap problem" from type-theoretic first principles by developing a dynamic semantics for incomplete functional programs, starting from the static semantics for incomplete functional programs developed in recent work on Hazelnut. We model incomplete functional programs as expressions with holes, with empty holes standing for missing expressions or types, and non-empty holes operating as membranes around static and dynamic type inconsistencies. Rather than aborting when evaluation encounters any of these holes as in some existing systems, evaluation proceeds around holes, tracking the closure around each hole instance as it flows through the remainder of the program. Editor services can use the information in these hole closures to help the programmer develop and confirm their mental model of the behavior of the complete portions of the program as they decide how to 1111 the remaining holes. Hole closures also enable a fill-and-resume operation that avoids the need to restart evaluation after edits that amount to hole filling. Formally, the semantics borrows machinery from both gradual type theory (which supplies the basis for handling unfilled type holes) and contextual modal type theory (which supplies a logical basis for hole closures), combining these and developing additional machinery necessary to continue evaluation past holes while maintaining type safety. We have mechanized the metatheory of the core calculus, called Hazelnut live, using the Agda proof assistant. We have also implemented these ideas into the Hazel

Robotic development suffers from a long cognitive distance between the code and the resulting behavior. This is due to the several steps necessary to build robotic behaviors: writing the code, compiling it, deploying it and finally testing it on the robot. All this slows down development and can make experimentation prohibitively expensive. In contrast, live programming tightens the feedback loop, minimizing the cognitive distance. As a result, programmers benefit from an immediate connection with the program that they are making thanks to an immediate, 'live' feedback of program behavior. This allows for extremely rapid creation, or variation, of robot behavior and for dramatically increased debugging speed. In this research, we fist explore the concept of live programming in the development of robot behaviors. Second, we present how we can validate our approach to improve the development of robotic behaviors.

Data science courses and tutorials have grown popular in recent years, yet they are still taught using production-grade programming tools (e.g., R, MATLAB, and Python IDEs) within desktop computing environments. Although powerful, these tools present high barriers to entry for novices, forcing them to grapple with the extrinsic complexities of software installation and configuration, data file management, data parsing, and Unix-like command-line interfaces. To lower the barrier for novices to get started with learning data science, we created ***, a bookmarklet that embeds a data science programming environment directly into any existing webpage. By transforming any webpage into an example centric IDE, *** eliminates the aforementioned complexities of desktop-based environments and turns the entire web into a rich substrate for learning data science. *** automatically parses HTML tables and CSV/TSV data sets on the target webpage, attaches code editors to each data set, provides a data table manipulation and visualization API designed for novices, and gives instructional scaffolding in the form of bidirectional previews of how the user's code and data relate.
