Visualizations of run-time program state help novices form proper mental models and debug their code. We push this technique to the extreme by posing the following question: What if a live programming environment for an imperative language always displays the entire history of all run-time values for all program variables all the time? To explore this question, we built a prototype live IDE called Omnicode ("Omniscient Code") that continually runs the user's Python code and uses a scatterplot matrix to visualize the entire history of all of its numerical values, along with meaningful numbers derived from other data types. To filter the visualizations and hone in on specific points of interest, the user can brush and link over the scatterplots or select portions of code. They can also zoom in to view detailed stack and heap visualizations at each execution step. An exploratory study on 10 novice programmers discovered that they found Omnicode to be useful for debugging, forming mental models, explaining their code to others, and discovering moments of serendipity that would not have been likely within an ordinary IDE.

A live programming environment allows programmers to edit programs while they are running. This means that successive "edit steps" must not allow a programmer to bring the program in a form that does not make any sense to the underlying language processor (i.e., parser, compiler,...). Many live programming environments therefore rely on disciplined edit steps that are based on language elements such as objects, classes, and methods. Textual modifications to these elements are not seen as edit steps until some "accept" button is hit. Unfortunately, no such elements exist in current reactive languages. We present a new reactive language, called Haai, that is based on first-class higher-order reactors. Linguistically, Haai programs correspond to reactors or compositions of reactors. At run-time, reactors produce an infinite stream of values just like signals and behaviours in existing languages. Haai's live programming environment relies on textual modifications of entire reactors as its basic edit steps. Changing a reactor automatically updates all occurrences of that reactor in the reactive program, while it is running.

Typically, development of robot behavior entails writing the code, deploying it on a simulator or robot and running it in a test setting. If this feedback reveals errors, the programmer mentally needs to map the error in behavior back to the source code that caused it before being able to fix it. This process suffers from a long cognitive distance between the code and the resulting behavior, which slows down development and can make experimentation with different behaviors prohibitively expensive. In contrast, live programming tightens the feedback loop, minimizing the cognitive distance. As a result, programmers benefit from an immediate connection with the program that they are making thanks to an immediate, 'live' feedback on program behavior. This allows for extremely rapid creation, or variation, of robot behavior and for dramatically increased debugging speed. To enable such live Robot programming, in this article we discuss LRP;our language that provides for live programming of nested state machines. We detail the design of the language and show its features, give an overview of the interpreter and how it enables the liveness properties of the language, and illustrate its independence from specific robot APIs. The idea of live programming has been applied in various domains, including the exploration of simulations, general-purpose application development, and even live performance of music. As a result, di. erent qualitative definitions of the term live programming exist. Often, these definitions refer to a sense of "directness" or "immediacy" regarding the responses of the system. However, most of them lack quantitative thresholds of this response time. Thus, we propose a survey of live programming environments to determine common response times the community regards as sufficient. In this paper, we discuss the design of an initial survey focusing on general-purpose live programming environments. We describe the selection process of systems and the benchmarking model to measure relevant time spans. We illustrate the potential outcomes of such a study with results from applying the benchmarking model to Squeak/Smalltalk and the Self environment. The results hint that a quick adaptation of the executable form might be a common feature of live programming environments.

Motivated by applications in automating repetitive file manipulations, we present a tool called StriSynth, which allows end-users to perform transformations over data using examples. Based on provided examples, our tool automatically generates scripts for non-trivial file manipulations. Although the current focus of StriSynth are file manipulations, it implements a more general string transformation framework. This framework builds on and further extends the functionality of Flash Fill-a Microsoft Excel extension for string transformations. Data scientists often conduct exploratory data analysis in scripting environments with a read-eval-print loop (REPL), like R, IPython or MATLAB. This user experience requires diligent management of execution and generates lengthy histories of unwanted command responses. This paper explores the alternative of live programming, a user experience in which the user's edits immediately and automatically update the script results-a "ripple" effect familiar from spreadsheets. Which user experience provides better support for exploratory data analysis, REPL or ripple? We conducted a controlled lab study with 15 data-experienced professionals. Each participant explored four datasets, two in each experience. The REPL sessions left histories with both significantly more data results and significantly more errors than the live sessions. However, both experiences produced comparable numbers of data results that participants self-rated as insightful. Participants largely preferred the live experience for its responsiveness and ability to keep the script content clean, but missed the visible history that a REPL provides.

live programming environments help the programmers to try out expressions by giving immediate feedback on the results as well as intermediate evaluation processes. However, the feedback is transient, and its correctness is merely confirmed by the programmers' manual inspection. We seamlessly integrate live programming with unit testing by proposing novel features (1) that converts a lively-tested expression into a unit test case, and (2) that extracts a unit test case from an execution trace of a lively-tested expression. In this poster, we overview Shiranui, our live programming environment, and present the proposed features implemented in Shiranui.

We demonstrate that a live-programming environment can be used to harness and add runtime interactivity to scientific simulation codes. Through a set of examples using a Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation framework we show how the real-time, human-in-the-loop interactivity of liveprogramming can be incorporated into traditional "offline" and development *** discuss how live programming tools and techniques can be productively integrated into the existing HPC landscape to increase productivity and enhance exploration and discovery. © The Authors 2015.
