live coding has gained its prominence in Computer Science (CS) classrooms as it enhances learning experiences by providing realtime demonstrations of programming and debugging during lectures. However, live coding may also present challenges to the effectiveness and inclusiveness of the classroom environment. This experience report presents the use of live coding in an introductory level CS course to better understand its impact on novice learners and their perceptions of the strategy. We conducted a between-subjects study at a public university in the United States across two course offerings. Specifically, the instructor taught the same course in two consecutive quarters: one with live coding and one without. Through assignment and exam scores, grades, and surveys, we compared data from students who experienced live coding with those who did not. We found that while live coding prompted engagement and interaction, and students believed that it helped them learn better, there was no statistically significant difference in course performance in terms of assignment and exam scores, nor in final grades. Additionally, most students prefer to keep live coding in lectures despite the challenges it presents. We also shared challenges, lessons, and practical instructional strategies learned from this experience, in the hope that they will contribute to developing more engaging and inclusive learning experiences in CS classrooms.

Human-machine agencies in live coding for music performance

In this article, we explore the notion of human-machine agencies in live coding applied to music performance. We first survey the literature on interactive music systems, new interfaces for musical expression, live coding and human-data interaction to identify common characteristics related to agency, which can be applied to the analysis of live coding practices. Then, we propose a theoretical framework for supporting the design, evaluation, and analysis of data-driven, AI-enhanced live coding systems. The framework, inspired by actor-network theory and human-data interaction, is composed of four dimensions: legibility, modifiability, predictability and cardinality. We reflect on two live coding systems built by the authors, utilising the four dimensions. We hope that the framework will help understand live coding in the datafication era, in which the data becomes a participating agent. Beyond live coding, our analysis can inform other artistic practices that use AI in interactive or real-time settings while keeping the human in the loop.

Networked, immersive, shared virtual environments are on the rise under the concept of the metaverse. Behind all the hype, however, it is an excellent opportunity for networked and virtual music performances using live coding. Especially in recent years, the use of metaverse environments for live coding performances has seen an upsurge due to the constraints of the global pandemic. While the performances are mostly integrated as 2D video streams into environments such as Mozilla Hubs, it seems reasonable to integrate browser-based live coding languages into these environments. This paper describes developing and integrating two live coding languages based on the Bytebeat concept into metaverse systems. They enable real-time live coding within a virtual environment, even collaboratively, with immersive capabilities through spatial audio rendering and the use of VR and AR devices. In addition, different art experiences through the visual composition of the environments can be created. We will show the development and benefits of the live coding languages implemented and the artistic possibilities these virtual environments offer.

Version control systems, which have proven essential for software engineering, can also provide value to creative and artistic practices. In this paper, we explore version control in the creative domain of live coding music, a generative performance practice where programmers edit and run code live to generate audiovisual artifacts. To that end, we developed SHARP, a lightweight version control system that live coders can use during performances as well as in preparation or practice sessions. We conducted a user study where live coders used SHARP for several weeks, wrote diary entries reflecting on their sessions, recorded a performance using SHARP, and participated in exit interviews. We found that SHARP enabled participants to engage with musical form on the fly in novel ways. In addition, the study revealed multifaceted perspectives on how and when versioning can be useful in the context of live coding. Our results inform the design of versioning systems for live coding and more generally for performance and generative arts practices.

Konnakol is a South Indian, Carnatic musical practice involving the vocal recitation of algorithmic, geometric rhythmic patterns of non-lexical syllables. I reflect on the experience of learning konnakol rhythms, and of adapting the TidalCycles and Strudel live coding environments to better represent Konnakol-inspired rhythms, based on the concept of the metrical tactus. I share visualisations of examples, and the development of a hybrid practice that integrates vocal patterns with live coding. I conclude by considering the issue of cultural appropriation around this work.

Introductory programming courses can be taught in a variety of ways, including live coding, where instructors write code in real-time in front of students, or static code examples, where pre-prepared code is explained to students. While previous studies have compared live coding and static coding and their impacts on student assessment and cognitive load in large lecture environments, we present our experiences in a single lab session, highlighting student engagement differences. After presenting the same material to groups of students through a live-coding presentation and a static code presentation, we reflect on the observable differences in student engagement through an established framework of cognitive engagement. Additionally, we compare pre-surveys, post-tests, and cognitive load surveys from both groups. While our findings did not result in significant differences in student assessments, our experience highlighted differences between live and static code presentations. live coding presentations can often take up to twice as long as static code presentations. Students may tend to ask more questions in live coding presentations, suggesting live coding provides instructors and students with more opportunities for further discussion. live coding may also provide the instructor with additional opportunities to discuss other concepts that may not have been included in a pre-prepared presentation.

Programming courses in higher education are often attended by several hundred students. In such large-scale courses, direct instruction is often the last resort, resulting in mostly passive students and limited social interaction. The instructor may present worked examples or perform live coding and the students try to reproduce these on their devices. However, there is usually no live coding where students work on small programming assignments themselves directly in class, because the instructor does not have a timely/rapid overviewof the most important common issues that are prevalent in class to support the students. This paper presents experiences with a teaching format to activate students that addresses the aforementioned issues. After students have worked on a small assignment and uploaded their solution attempt within a specified time period, an extended e-assessment system analyzes all submissions and instantly provides an overview of the number of correct submissions as well as all common errors and their frequency to assist the instructor in the immediate tailored discussion. This approach makes it possible to engage students, make student performance visible to all participants, and discuss the most common errors. Students liked "their" live coding, the discussion of "their" errors, and want to do it more often, although not many students uploaded their solution attempts. The teaching scenario, benefits, pitfalls, possible improvements, and further application scenarios are discussed.

A glitch means an error in image, video, or sound, and glitch art is art in which glitches are intentionally generated by destroying digital data or physically manipulating electronic devices for artistic purposes. The effects of such glitches are often unpredictable and aesthetically interesting. As part of our exploration of glitching methods and performance, we have attempted to generate glitch art images using musical live coding. Specifically, we generated glitches in PNG image data in conjunction with sound effects using the Sonic Pi: musical live coding system. Furthermore, such glitch art images are generated in real-time. We have confirmed that our method can generate glitches with regularity assuming the filtering of PNGs. This research proposes a method of art expression across sound and image and is an attempt to explore the performance of glitch art.

live coding is a recommended teaching practice in which an instructor dynamically programs in front of students. However, findings related to students' engagement during live coding are mixed. Some works have reported that live coding seems to improve student engagement while others regard live coding as an activity in which students passively observe the instructor without asking questions or following along. Active live coding, in which students extend a live coding example and discuss with peers, incorporates active learning with the traditional live coding approach. We conducted a quasi-experimental study in which one section of an advanced introductory programming course was taught using active live coding (ALC) and the other was taught using traditional live coding (TLC). The goal of this work is to compare students' behavioral engagement in the two lectures using a classroom observation protocol called the Behavioral Engagement Related to Instruction (BERI) protocol. Our results from the 2,790 observations we collected indicate that traditional live coding engages only 65% of students, on average. However, we found a "persisting engagement" effect of active live coding, where students were significantly more engaged in the traditional live coding components of a lecture up to 20 minutes after the active live coding component. Notably, the two lecture groups performed similarly on the Post-Lecture Questions, which were administered after each lecture as a review of the lecture material. Therefore, our results indicate an improved student engagement due to active live coding, but do not show a corresponding improvement in conceptual knowledge.

This article aims to explore live coding of choreography as real time scoring of the dance performance it is creating. It will define live coding as a performance practice, and way of creating choreographic scores, as well as consider some forms of esoteric programming languages (esolangs) as forms of multicoding and explanations of text. It will then explore the work Terpsicode, a live coding language created to make choreography in real-time resulting in duets for coder and dancer and discuss the ways in which Terpsicode is used in performance by creating visual scores from dance terminology. Terpsicode is a demonstration not only of live coding choreography but of multicoding, allowing for both text and visuals to notate the dance score in real-time while the dancers are interpreting the score into movement.
