Accurate Range-Free localization algorithms Based on PSO for Wireless Sensor Networks

Recently, localization accuracy of unknown nodes has become a critical and challenging issue for many Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Without associating the detected event with its precise geographic location will be surely considered meaningless for these applications. Among all localization algorithms, we observe that the DV-Hop localization algorithm is highly recommended to use in many fields of application due to its simplicity, feasibility, low cost, and no extra hardware requirements, but the localization error caused by the DV-Hop algorithm is relatively large. In this current work, based on both the DV-Hop algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, we proposed four new localization algorithms to overcome the shortcomings of low accuracy that the basic DV-Hop based algorithms produce. The simulation results showed that the proposed localization algorithms can achieve a better localization performance in terms of accuracy in comparison with other existing algorithms such as basic DV-Hop, MDV-Hop and DV-Hop PSO under different random network topologies. We also observed that a significant localization accuracy is achieved by the proposed algorithm HWDV-HopPSO.

The term partial discharge (PD) refers to a partial bridging of insulating material between electrodes that sustain an electric field in high-voltage (HV) systems. Long-term PD activity can lead to catastrophic failures of HV systems resulting in economic, energy and even human life losses. Such failures and losses can be avoided by continuously monitoring PD activity. Existing techniques used for PD localization including time of arrival (TOA) and time difference of arrival (TDOA), are complicated and expensive because they require time synchronization. In this paper, a novel received signal strength (RSS) based localization algorithm is proposed. The reason that RSS is favoured in this research is that it does not require clock synchronization and it only requires the energy of the received signal rather than the PD pulse itself. A comparison was made between RSS based algorithms including a proposed algorithm, the ratio and search and the least squares algorithm to locate a PD source for nine different positions. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated by using two field scenarios based on seven and eight receiving nodes, respectively. The mean localization error calculated for two-field-trial scenarios show, respectively, 1.80 m and 1.76 m for the proposed algorithm for all nine positions, which is the lowest of the three algorithms.

This letter investigates a communication node relative localization problem based on time-of-arrival (TOA), where both the distances in direct signal paths and reflecting signal paths are measured. A wireless sensor network model of distance measurements and node locations is established, and a new two-step localization iterative algorithm is proposed. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm, which is compared with Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) and genetic algorithm (GA)-based algorithms.

A novel localization algorithm for moving target in sensor networks is proposed, which is based on overlap area boundary of sensor detection. The algorithm inherits the advantage of binary sensing model that sensor nodes only need provide 0 or 1 information to represent whether detect a target or not, and improves the location precision compares to traditional centroid localization algorithm that can only locate a target position between intersection area of sensor nodes. According to the spatio-temporal continuity of the trajectory of a moving target, the algorithm determines a dynamic queue of sensor nodes those have detected the target in order, and shrinks the possible location of a target into a boundary of intersection area of all nodes in the queue. In this way, the algorithm achieves better location precision than traditional centroid localization algorithm. Results of simulation experiments prove the truth of better location precision of this algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm has the features of good expansibility and robustness by avoiding whole net time synchronization instead of local communication between nodes.

New approaches for automatic threedimensional source localization of acoustic emissions - Applications to concrete specimens

The task of locating a source in space by measuring travel time differences of elastic or electromagnetic waves from the source to several sensors is evident in varying fields. The new concepts of automatic acoustic emission localization presented in this article are based on developments from geodesy and seismology. A detailed description of source location determination in space is given with the focus on acoustic emission data from concrete specimens. Direct and iterative solvers are compared. A concept based on direct solvers from geodesy extended by a statistical approach is described which allows a stable source location determination even for partly erroneous onset times. The developed approach is validated with acoustic emission data from a large specimen leading to travel paths up to 1 m and therefore to noisy data with errors in the determined onsets. The adaption of the algorithms from geodesy to the localization procedure of sources of elastic waves offers new possibilities concerning stability, automation and performance of localization results. Partial discharge (PD) is a widely adopted method for the internal insulation detection of electrical transformers. The impact of the refraction and diffraction of the ultrasonic signal in the oil, winding, and core in the transformer makes the localization of the PD source inside the transformer a nontrivial task. The refraction and diffraction factors can introduce additional complexity to the localization equations that can hardly be solved. This article proposes an algorithmic solution based on the time difference of arrival algorithm and semidefinite relaxation convex optimization to improve the PD source localization accuracy. The refraction and diffraction error, measurement error, and their relationship in the process of PD signal propagation are fully considered. The proposed solution is extensively assessed through simulation, testbed, and field experiments, and the results confirm that the proposed solution outperforms the Chan and particle swarm optimization algorithm with the localization error of about 0.1 m.

Research on Optical Fiber Sensor localization Based on the Partial Discharge Ultrasonic Characteristics in Long-Distance XLPE Cables

To improve the safety and antielectromagnetic interference performance of partial discharge detection in high-voltage DC cables, partial discharge of cables is used as a criterion for characterizing insulation defects. An ultrasonic detection method for the partial discharge of optical fiber detection is carried out in a long-distance high-voltage DC operating environment. By analyzing the partial discharge mechanism and ultrasonic characteristics of DC cables, a correlation model between partial discharge ultrasonic waves and discharge quantity is established. The partial discharge charge of several common insulation defects is obtained experimentally, and an ultrasonic characteristic Sagnac fiber detection system is realized. Standard ultrasonic time domain signal detection and fiber-optic sensing probe directional experiments are performed. The influence of fiber sensing probes with different lengths on the sensitivity of partial discharge signals is investigated based on the frequency distribution characteristics of partial discharges. The ultrasonic wave is measured based on a fiber-optic probe and can perform multipoint detection, and the partial discharge of the +/- 320 kV flexible DC transmission system was tested based on the developed optical fiber sensing system. The experimental results show that the partial discharge signal detection of 6 km long cable can be realized, and the localization accuracy is less than +/- 80 m. It provides a practical monitoring method for the perception of long-distance transmission equipment operating states.

An experimental comparative study of RSSI-based positioning algorithms for passive RFID localization in smart environments

The rapid adoption of wireless technologies has increased the interest of many laboratories about the field of wireless sensor network or the radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology which has emerged as a winning combination for the implementation of an advanced assistance system within smart environments. To fulfill the important mission of a technological assistance, a technique first had to identify the ongoing activities of its user by tracking everyday life objects in real time using, for example, passive RFID tags. To increase the quality of information extracted from the objects localization by properly using the received signal strength indicator, this paper explores Kalman filter, particle filter and few others filtering algorithm that enhances the tracking performance. It also discusses three of the most interesting methods that can be applied for the localization of objects in smart environments without requiring the installation of references tags everywhere. Finally, to increase the value, we include experiments that were conducted within a real smart home infrastructure to review the positive and negative elements of each method.

Node localization is an essential problem in ad hoc wireless sensor networks. Map stitching is a type of localization algorithm that has received a great deal of attention recently. In this algorithm, the network is divided into small overlapping subregions, each of which creates a local map. Then, the local maps are stitched together to form a single global map. In this paper, we first propose a new technique for map-to-map stitching that exploits every available distances between two maps. Next, we propose a few anchor-free localization algorithms based on our stitching technique. We experimentally studied the performance of our algorithms under various settings. The results show that our method achieves a significant performance improvement upon the existing method.
