This paper introduced the development course of wireless sensor network in recent years, and analyzed basic principles of the node localization, and thoroughly discussed typical algorithms of the node localization. Then, aiming at the shortage of three-dimensional localization algorithm, on the basis of number of beacons within the unknown node communication range, the space vector model is built for localization. A new type of three-dimensional localization mechanism in wireless sensor networks is proposed. Simultaneously, the basic principle of localization algorithm and implementation method in simulation environment of NS2 and MATLAB are also given. Simulation results show that the algorithm improves the accuracy of node localization and reduces the impact of algorithm positioning error by communication radius and density of beacons.

This paper presents an analytical method for one to compute the centroid of the overlapping area of two intersecting circles with arbitrary orientation. We also extend the solution to estimate the centroid of the overlapping area of three intersecting circles. Furthermore, based on the analytical solution of centroid computing, we propose a cell-based localization technique, namely Centroid Based Location (CBL) for wireless sensor networks. CBL works by finding the centroid of intersection of any two circles. In particular, we study the effect of power level mismatch among anchors. Simulation results show that CBL can significantly improve the accuracy while reducing the transmission power of anchors.

RSS Assisted TOA-Based Indoor Geolocation

The huge distance measurement error in indoor areas and the difficulty of error estimation have posed great challenges to the design of practical TOA-based indoor geolocation systems. In this paper, we presented an RSS assisted TOA-based indoor localization algorithm, which uses RSS to estimate the range of DME for reference node selection and position estimation. This algorithm effectively improves the accuracy of distance measurement and position estimation, and thus improve the localization accuracy of the system. The algorithm is applied into a practical TOA-based indoor geolocation system, developed based on a commercially available device. The results of performance evaluation in a typical office environment show that the localization accuracy of our proposed algorithm is better than the conventional algorithms.

In wireless ad hoc networks, location service is used to confirm geographical position and data information of a specific node for efficient routing. However, since in some specific circumstances ad hoc network localization cannot just rely on global positioning system (GPS), self-localization algorithm is a focus during wireless ad hoc research process and supplies solution for the problem. This paper integrates some existing prevalent self-localization algorithms and introduces some representative algorithms, then evaluates the algorithms and makes a comparison, at last educes a conclusion.

The proliferation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has fostered the demand of context aware applications, among which localization plays a significant role. localization in WSN is facing the challenges of (1) error and noise;(2) dynamic environments;(3) data packet loss. However, most presented localization algorithms are verified just by simulation but practical systems. To validate the localization algorithms realistically, a prototype WSN system equipped with a group of sensor nodes is deployed in this paper. A trilateration based optimization approaches and the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) with position-velocity (PV) model are proposed and tested in the system comparing with the traditional trilateration. The experiment result indicates that the two proposed localization algorithms have much better accuracy than the traditional trilateration and, in a certain aspect, EKF with PV model is the most suitable algorithm among the three algorithms for localization in the prototype system.

A range-free three dimensional localization scheme based on optimum space step distance (OSSDL) and an improved node self-localization algorithm based on virtual central node (IVCN) for wireless sensor network (WSN) are proposed in our previous papers. By analyzing classic two dimensional DV-Hop localization algorithm, OSSDL algorithm realizes localization. Especially by optimizing distances from the 3D network model, the optimum space step distance from nodes to anchors in OSSDL is obtained and the coordinates of all unknown nodes can be derived finally. However in IVCN localization algorithm, by deducing a 3D special node in the cube which is virtually formed by eight anchor nodes, which is called virtual central node, unknown nodes can compute their own estimated positions automatically. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis of OSSDL and IVCN are presented to explore their true performances. We also have made comparisons with classic DV-Hop and Centroid algorithms with several parameters changed under the same simulation environments. The index of positioning accuracy is addressed. From simulation results, IVCN performs better on localization accuracy than OSSDL, which is definitely much better than that of original DV-Hop.

This work presents a theoretical and experimental study of methods and strategies to implement an ubiquitous positioning system based on IEEE 802.15.4 radio signals. Ranging phase is first analyzed. An empirical method, for a combined use of both Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and Time Of Flight (TOF) measures, is proposed. Distance measurements performed in different scenarios highlight that RSSI measures provide lower errors on short distance while TOF measures are more suitable for longer distances. The RSSI threshold in use can be different for every scenario but our measurements show that it can be well identified by observing the relevant RSSI calibration curve. Once this threshold is identified, a complementary use of RSSI and TOF measures is then possible. Subsequently the positioning phase is analyzed. The main range-based and centralized localization algorithms are at first compared using simulated localizations, both in their cooperative and non cooperative version, in order to have a complete overview of their performances. However, the considered driving case study (the position monitoring of vehicles/assets in a typical airport area) puts in evidence the requirement for a non cooperative localization strategy. In this condition simulations show that the optimization approach outperforms the other localization algorithms. The deterministic optimization has been also preferred to the stochastic one: position accuracy being equal, the stochastic optimization methods also need the preliminary set up of different parameters through several simulations and trials. Real-world positioning tests, considering indoor and outdoor scenarios of different sizes (from ten to some hundreds of meters) confirm the validity of this choice, the effectiveness of the proposed ranging method and also the importance of exploiting anchors' redundancy. The locations of sensor nodes are essential to Wireless Sensor Networks applications. Researchers have proposed many localization algorithms for Wireless Sensor Network and verified them through simulators. In this paper, a system-level node location model that aims to validate proposed algorithms for wireless sensor networks in Matlab environment is proposed. This model can reflect the reality networks effectively. Using this model, researchers can verify the performance of the localization algorithms including run time, location error, and location node numbers.

A navigation method for a lunar rover based on large scale wireless sensor networks is proposed. To obtain high navigation accuracy and large exploration area, high node localization accuracy and large network scale are required. However, the computational and communication complexity and time consumption are greatly increased with the increase of the network scales. A localization algorithm based on a spring model (LASM) method is proposed to reduce the computational complexity, while maintaining the localization accuracy in large scale sensor networks. The algorithm simulates the dynamics of physical spring system to estimate the positions of nodes. The sensor nodes are set as particles with masses and connected with neighbor nodes by virtual springs. The virtual springs will force the particles move to the original positions, the node positions correspondingly, from the randomly set positions. Therefore, a blind node position can be determined from the LASM algorithm by calculating the related forces with the neighbor nodes. The computational and communication complexity are O( 1) for each node, since the number of the neighbor nodes does not increase proportionally with the network scale size. Three patches are proposed to avoid local optimization, kick out bad nodes and deal with node variation. Simulation results show that the computational and communication complexity are almost constant despite of the increase of the network scale size. The time consumption has also been proven to remain almost constant since the calculation steps are almost unrelated with the network scale size.
