A novel localization algorithm for moving target in sensor networks is proposed, which is based on overlap area boundary of sensor detection. The algorithm inherits the advantage of binary sensing model that sensor nodes only need provide 0 or 1 information to represent whether detect a target or not, and improves the location precision compares to traditional centroid localization algorithm that can only locate a tat-get position between inlet-section area of sensor nodes. According to the spatio-temporal continuity of the trajectory of a moving target, the algorithm determines a dynamic queue of sensor nodes those have detected the target in order, and shrinks the possible location of a tat-get into a boundary of intersection area of all nodes in the queue. In this way, the algorithm achieves better location precision than traditional centroid localization algorithm. Results of simulation experiments prove the truth of better location precision of this algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm has the features of good expansibility and robustness by avoiding whole net time synchronization instead of local communication between nodes.

Tracking complex human body 3D gestures to realize human-computer interfaces is possible using the proposed localization system. It is composed of a number of low-cost 3D remote position sensors and of a set of beacons that emit a sequence of ultra-acoustic pulses in the space region containing the position sensors. When impinged by the acoustic wavefronts, each sensor sends back a signal to a central unit through a suitable transmission channel. The central unit, knowing the positions of the acoustic beacons and the time of arrival of the sensor signals, computes the positions of the sensors, identifying and discarding possible false signals due to echoes and environmental noise. In a first prototype implementation, four coplanar beacons, actually earphones, are placed at the corners of a PC screen, and are forced to emit pulses in the 20 - 40 kHz band. Each sensor is equipped with a wideband miniature microphone, which is wired to an acquisition board. All the computation, including signal filtering, time of arrival detection, localization and results display, is carried out by a notebook PC at 25 Hz.

A range-based localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks

Sensor localization has become an essential requirement for realistic applications over wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this paper we propose an ad hoc localization algorithm that is infrastructure-free, anchor-free, and computationally efficient with reduced communication. A novel combination of distance and direction estimation technique is introduced to detect and estimate ranges between neighbors. Using this information we construct unidirectional coordinate systems to avoid the reflection ambiguity. We then compute node positions using a transformation matrix [T], which reduces the computational complexity of the localization algorithm while computing positions relative to the fixed coordinate system. Simulation results have shown that at a node degree of 9 we get 90% localization with 20% average localization error without using any error refining schemes.

Node localization is an essential problem in ad hoc wireless sensor networks. Map stitching is a type of localization algorithm that has received a great deal of attention recently. In this algorithm, the network is divided into small overlapping subregions, each of which creates a local map. Then, the local maps are stitched together to form a single global map. In this paper, we first propose a new technique for map-to-map stitching that exploits every available distances between two maps. Next, we propose a few anchor-free localization algorithms based on our stitching technique. We experimentally studied the performance of our algorithms under various settings. The results show that our method achieves a significant performance improvement upon the existing method.

As one of the fundamental issues in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the sensor localization problem has recently received extensive attention. In this work, we investigate this problem from a novel perspective by treating it as a functional dual of target tracking. In traditional tracking problems, static location-aware sensors track and predict the position and/or velocity of a moving target. As a dual, we utilize a moving location assistant (LA) (with a global positioning system (GPS) or a predefined moving path) to help location-unaware sensors to accurately discover their positions. We call our proposed system Landscape. In Landscape, an LA (an aircraft, for example) periodically broadcasts its current location (we call it a beacon) while it moves around or through a sensor field. Each sensor collects the location beacons, measures the distance between itself and the LA based on the received signal strength (RSS), and individually calculates their locations via an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF)-based algorithm. Landscape has several features that are favorable to WSNs, such as high scalability, no intersensor communication overhead, moderate computation cost, robustness to range errors and network connectivity, etc. Extensive simulations demonstrate that Landscape is an efficient sensor positioning scheme for outdoor sensor networks.

localization is always a critical technology of wireless network. This paper introduces the theory of RSS-base localization, sets up a new localization algorithm and analyzes excellence of this algorithm. This paper compares it with other algorithms and copares their localization accuracy and directional judgement accuracy by indoor experiments. The result indicates that analysis of the noises and circumstance will help direction and improving the localization accuracy.

Analyzing the measuring errors of nodes using Received Signal Strength Indications (RSSI) method, such as the parameter error of RSSI theoretical model and the obstacle error between neighbor nodes, this paper proposed a localization algorithm based on analyzing of RSSI errors in wireless sensor networks called ERSSI. Based on the two errors mentioned, it got the online parameter changing method for RSSI theoretical model and reduced the effect of those small obstacles. We show by both theoretical analysis and simulations that this algorithm can get low localization errors when the size of obstacles is small.

In patch-and-stitch localization algorithms, a flip-error refers to the kind of error in which a patch is stitched to the map as being wrongly reflected. In this paper, we present an anchor-free localization algorithm which tries to detect and prevent flip errors. The flip error prevention is achieved by two filtering mechanisms: the flip-ambiguity test and the flip-conflict detection. We evaluate the performances of proposed techniques though simulations and show that they achieve significant performance improvements.

Monitoring applications define an important class of applications used in wireless sensor networks. In these applications the network perceives the environment and searches for event occurrences (phenomena) by sensing different physical properties, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, ambient light, movement, and presence (for target tracking). In such cases the location information of both phenomena and nodes is usually required for tracking and correlation purposes. In this work we summarize most of the concepts related to localization systems for WSNs as well as how to localize the nodes in these networks (which allows the localization of phenomena). By dividing the localization systems into three distinct components-distance/angle estimation, position computation, and localization algorithm-besides providing a didactic viewpoint, we show that these components can be seen as subareas of the localization problem that need to be analyzed and studied separately.
