Measures of false positive (FP) and false negative (FN) localization error are defined to assess the accuracy of diagnostic imaging procedures. These measures involve the weighting of FP and FN pixels in accordance to their distances from the true localization of the lesion and the region detected as abnormal by the classifier. The distance-based localization receiver operating characteristic (DL-ROC) curve is defined to describe the dependence of the FP and FN localization measures on the classifier's decision threshold. A computer system is presented for the analysis of localization experiments according to these concepts. As an illustration, the accuracy of two types of brain electric topographic montage is studied in the localization of brain tumors and sites of stroke.

The localization error for a magnetic dipole localized by measuring its remote field and field-gradient tensor and then solving a linear equation, proposed by Nara et al. in 2006, is usually considered independent of the dipole moment posture. Here, analysis of localization error is carried out by computer simulation, it shows that the error is obvious to be highly dependent on the location and direction of the moment by establishing a set of combined coordinates;the localization of an unknown dipole is thus questionable and has to be jumbled in general. However, in localizing a known dipole as a magnetic marker the error may he small;the optimum sensor dipole configuration with the smallest localization error is given here.

Preoperative endoscopy localization error rate in patients with colorectal cancer

Preoperative repeat endoscopy in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients is considered by many to be an integral component of surgical planning. Little is known, however, about the utility of re-endoscopy. A retrospective review of 342 consecutive patients undergoing elective surgical resection for CRC from January 2008 to December 2011 was performed. Patients were included if the initial endoscopist was different than the operating surgeon. A localization error was recorded if the final tumor location identified during surgery was in a different anatomical segment than that identified by endoscopy. The Chi-squared test was used to compare categorical variables. An error rate with a 95 % confidence interval was obtained using the exact binomial distribution. 298 patients were identified, 118 (39.6 %) of whom also underwent a preoperative re-endoscopy by the operating surgeon or partner. Nineteen patients had incorrect tumor localization at initial endoscopy, equivalent to a 6.4 % error rate (95 % CI 3.88-9.78). In comparison, there were two localization errors on re-endoscopy, 1.69 % (95 % CI 0.21-6.00). Re-endoscopy was found to be protective against localization errors (P < 0.05), correcting 10 of the 12 errors made at the initial endoscopy. The sensitivity of re-endoscopy as a diagnostic tool to detect errors was 83 % with a corresponding specificity of 100 %. The overall accuracy of re-endoscopy in preventing endoscopic localization errors was 92 % (95 % CI 81-100). There is a small but important localization error rate in preoperative endoscopic evaluation of colorectal tumors. Re-endoscopy appears to be safe and may potentially identify and correct these errors and help with preoperative planning at the expense of delaying surgery. Further research is necessary to find ways to improve localization and identify which patients would benefit from re-endoscopy.

A composed localization error estimation method is presented for the application in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which employs maximum likelihood (ML) to locate. Two statistic indexes are given in this method to characterize the whole localization performance of WSN in error aspect. The number of WSN nodes can be determined before deploying to achieve the necessary localization accuracy. Through mathematic analysis, the expressions of mathematical expectation and standard deviation of a WSN are acquired. Besides, based on the expressions, the two indexes are calculated through Monte Carlo simulation. An application applying this method demonstrates the procedure of determining the optimum numbers of unknown nodes (who doesn't know their Positions) and anchor nodes (who know their Positions).

The study of the cerebral electric activity in the brain, requires estimation of the EEG inverse problem. Several methods of the inverse problem solution are studied in the literature. In this paper we propose a comparative study of the localization error based on distance between active sources, using WMN-FOCUSS, LORETA-FOCUSS, and Shrinking sLORETA-FOCUSS as inverse problem solution. So, we consider the presence of two active sources whose distance intervals range from 1cm to 10cm. This study is made in a first case using electrode configuration on the entire brain, and in a second case on each lobe separately. The presented results show that the new approach for the separately lobes gives a good localization of the active sources in the brain.

In indoor environment, one of the major challenges for researchers is to localize the sensor nodes with relatively high localization precision. Many traditional positioning algorithms dealt with the node localization issues, such as Two-Phase Positioning (FPP) algorithm, without taking into account the "reference node" parameter, however which also strongly affects the quality of spatial localization. We analyze the localization error and draw the conclusion that the localization error is the least when three reference nodes form an equilateral triangle. Therefore, we propose Reference Node Selection algorithm based on Trilateration (RNST). The simulation results show that our algorithm can meet real-time localization requirement of the mobile nodes in indoor environment, and make the localization error less than that of the traditional algorithm.

The location of the sensor node is critical in wireless sensor networks (WSN) as the information acquired by the sensor node may be worthless without knowing its source. However, high accurate positioning of sensor nodes remains a big challenge. To overcome the barrier, an improved cuckoo search algorithm with fuzzy logic and Gauss-Cauchy strategy (ICS-FG) is proposed, that integrates the meta-heuristic algorithm with the traditional method. To regulate the dynamic adjustment of parameters, our study proposes a fuzzy logic based on population diversity. The proposed Gauss- Cauchy strategy significantly improve the algorithm's search accuracy while enhancing its robustness when evaluated on several selected benchmark functions and locating unknown nodes in WSN. Experimental results obtained from well-known benchmark functions demonstrate the advance of the ICS-FG approach over the parallel compact cuckoo search algorithm (pcCS), improved adaptive genetic algorithm (IAGA), and other remarkable methods. By quantitative assessment, the proposed ICS-FG approach achieves a lower positioning error than pcCS, IAGA, and other state-of-the-art algorithms. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the various applications where the wireless sensor network (WSN) is deployed all the sensor nodes work collectively for a particular task. It is useful in various applications as in the military, medical, home related to monitoring human body activities also. As in WSN, sensors sense the environment and this sensing is not useful until the exact location of the sensor is not known. So in WSN, localization is an important task. Mainly, there are two types of algorithms that are available for localization, range based and free range. All of these algorithms are differentiated on the basis of one common factor that is the localization error. Under the range free localization approach most explored algorithm is a distance vector (DV) Hop. In this paper, a new distance error correction metric based algorithm is proposed to minimize the error that exists in the basic hop based algorithms. It has been implemented in MATLAB for the results verification and comparison. Moreover, the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed for various factors like the average localization error, error variance and accuracy in accordance to the parameters like the total node amount, the anchor node amount and range. Simulation results conclude that the proposed error correction based approach presented in this paper performed exceptionally well against the basic DV Hop, improved DV(IDV) Hop and particle swarm optimization based DV Hop and thus improves the overall localization process of the whole network.

OBB detector: occluded object detection based on geometric modeling of video frames

Object detection is an important research area in video surveillance systems, aimed at identifying and locating target objects within recorded scenes. Various object detectors fail when partial occlusion occurs in which only some features of the objects are visible due to overlapped bounding boxes. This situation can result in miscounting of the objects and misaligning the bounding boxes leading to localization loss. To address these problems, we have proposed a geometric-based axis-aligned bounding box method with occlusion prior conditions to estimate the location of overlapped bounding boxes with a single viewpoint. Firstly, the proposed method detects the closest points of the detected bounding boxes by extracting geometric features namely the width, height, and area of the detected objects. Secondly, occlusion prior condition is used to detect the partial occlusion and compute the overlapped area under different levels of occlusions such as (i) 20-40% and (ii) 40-70%. The performance of the proposed method has been tested on two benchmark datasets: Highway and PETS 2006, both containing outdoor video frames. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect the objects under partial occlusion which are approximately 65% occluded with 92.7% precision in the Highway dataset and 85.1% precision in the PETS2006 dataset. Also, it has been observed that the bounding box localization loss of the proposed method has been improved by 1.76% in the Highway dataset and 2% in the PETS2006 dataset by generating the correct aligned bounding boxes on the detected objects, especially in the case of partial occlusion.
