Many wireless sensor networks (WSNs) applications, techniques, and algorithms require the position of the sensor nodes. Sensor nodes mainly rely on localization algorithms to determine their own physical location. Usually, these sensor nodes are equipped with a limited power source. Therefore, a localization algorithm used by a WSN should be an energy-aware algorithm. One of the energy efficient localization algorithms that has been proposed recently is an efficient localization algorithm for wireless ad hoc sensor networks with high accuracy (ALWadHA). In this paper, we investigate the impact of using three techniques by ALWadHA in improving the energy efficiency of ALWadHA: first, a single-estimation approach whereby a node estimates its position only once;second, dynamic power control whereby reference nodes reduce their transmission power based on their distance to the node that broadcasts the location request;and third an incremental and exponential requesting rate approach, which controls the frequency rate of sending the location request. Simulation results show that the final approach reduces the energy consumption of ALWadHA by 51.5%, without compromising the accuracy of the position estimation.

An RSSI-based localization algorithm for outliers suppression in wireless sensor networks

Node localization technology is one of the most important technologies in wireless sensor networks. Due to the advantages of saving and convenience, received signal strength indication (RSSI) technology is widely taken to measure the distance between the sensor nodes, and then trilateral localization algorithm which is one of the classic algorithms can calculate the position result quickly. However, the result always comes with an irregularly wide error. Environment, temperature and electromagnetism are generally considered the interference factors, which have been widely researched. From another angle, this study focuses on the error of the algorithm itself, and discusses the stability of equations. A trilateral localization algorithm for outliers suppression is proposed. Through a large number of simulation, it is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm has a good performance than classic trilateral algorithm based-on the nearest three anchor nodes. A significant meaning of this research is that the deepest source of gross errors has been found when we use classic trilateral algorithm.

Inertial optimization MCL deep mine localization algorithm based on grey prediction and artificial bee colony

To solve the problem that the existing Monte Carlo localization (MCL) algorithm has long localization time and large localization error in the real-time localization of downhole personnel and mobile equipment, an inertial optimization MCL deep mine localization algorithm based on gray prediction and artificial bee colony (IMCL-GABC) is proposed. Firstly, the movement speed and direction of the personnel or equipment to be located at the current moment are estimated by the grey prediction model, and the sampling area is determined by combining with the structural characteristics of the deep mine roadway. Secondly, the artificial bee colony algorithm is introduced to optimize the filtering to eliminate the less likely position points and obtain the approximate optimal estimated position sampling set. Finally, the weight of the sample is optimized by motion inertia, so as to complete the localization of the personnel or mobile equipment to be located. The simulation results show that the average localization error of the IMCL-GABC algorithm is 0.46 m and the average localization time required for the node to move one step is 0.21 s. Compared with the other two mobile node localization algorithms MCL and Monte Carlo localization Boxed, the localization error of IMCL-GABC algorithm is reduced by 50% and 37.84% respectively, and the localization time is reduced by 4.6 s and 0.93 s respectively, which proves that IMCL-GABC algorithm effectively improves the localization accuracy and efficiency of downhole personnel and mobile equipment.

A three-dimensional localization algorithm for passive radio-frequency identification device tag

The accuracy and efficiency of radio-frequency identification device tag localization is significant to a large number of existing and upcoming radio-frequency identification device applications. In this article, we have introduced a novel method to locate a radio-frequency identification device tag in three-dimensional space. The proposed method uses readers with multiple power levels to locate the passive radio-frequency identification device tags. First, we preprocess the data and estimate the distances between the readers and target tag. Then, we use sphere trilateration method to estimate the location of the radio-frequency identification device tags in three-dimensional space. Finally, we use planar fit method and the method of least squares to reduce the localization error. Both the simulation and testbed experiment results have shown that the proposed method can reach a higher positioning accuracy with less radio-frequency identification device readers and more robust to the environment than other existing methods.

Wireless sensor network (WSN) is widely used in a variety of practical applications. WSN may be used to sense objects, gather information, analyze it, and then transmit it again. The significance of optimization techniques is crucial for the accurate and reliable estimation of the sensor nodes' location. The positioning accuracy of traditional distance vector hop (DV-Hop) localization algorithm is not entirely satisfactory instead of it is quite simple, stabilized, feasible, and requires less hardware. Thus to enhance the positioning accuracy without increasing the hardware cost of a sensor node, this article provides an improved distance vector hop (IDV-Hop) localization algorithm using human conception optimization. The proposed method adds a parameter to alter the anchor nodes' hop size. Furthermore, it is analyzed with traditional DV-Hop, IDV-Hop algorithm, DV-Hop based particle swarm optimization, and DV-Hop based class topper optimization. The simulation results support the conclusion that, the proposed algorithm performs better than the competing algorithms by minimizing the localization error, localization error variance, and the localization accuracy with varying the number of anchor nodes, total number of nodes, and the communication range.

Information about the position of entities is very valuable in many fields. People, animals, robots and sensors are some examples of entities that have been targeted as nodes of interest for localization purposes. Technical advances in ubiquitous computing and wireless communications properties are very valuable means to obtain localization information. This paper presents a novel range-free localization algorithm based on connectivity and motion (LACM). The core of the algorithm is an error function that measures the error of the obtained trajectories with respect to the localization solution space, a multidimensional space that encompasses all solutions that satisfy completely the constraints of a range-free localization problem. LACM is a centralized method that can be used standalone or as a refinement phase for other localization methods. Limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno, an unconstrained optimization algorithm, is the numerical method used to minimize the error function. The performance of LACM is validated both through extensive simulations with excellent results in scenarios with irregular communications and by transforming real Bluetooth connectivity traces into localization information.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN), as a new information acquisition and processing technology in target tracking, intrusion detection, positioning and other related fields, has broad application prospects. Multidimensional Scaling, which can be run in both range-based and range-free conditions, and proved to achieve high accuracy in range-based cases, is attracting a lot of researches. In this paper, we review the development of WSNs and the location based on MDS-MAP algorithm. MDS-MAP is an inherently centralized algorithm and is therefore of limited utility in many applications. We summarize the improvements that have been made over the past 20 years, and make a comparison of various methods.

Scan Matching Cross-Correlation-Based localization algorithm: Embedded Systems Implementation Perspective

localization in an indoor environment is a challenging aspect of an autonomous mobile robot control as such mobile systems typically have limited computational capacity. It is therefore essential to design an algorithm capable of reliable robot's position calculation and, at the same time, suitable for implementation in embedded devices. This contribution describes a modified point-to-point Scan Matching algorithm based on cross-correlation, which was first introduced in our previous study. The newly developed algorithm running in a single thread is implemented in C language and decreases the computational complexity, i.e. time needed for calculation of the robot's position, by as much as 20% compared to the original solution implemented in C#. LiDAR sensor was used to test the algorithm. © 2018

A range-based localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks

Sensor localization has become an essential requirement for realistic applications over wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this paper we propose an ad hoc localization algorithm that is infrastructure-free, anchor-free, and computationally efficient with reduced communication. A novel combination of distance and direction estimation technique is introduced to detect and estimate ranges between neighbors. Using this information we construct unidirectional coordinate systems to avoid the reflection ambiguity. We then compute node positions using a transformation matrix [T], which reduces the computational complexity of the localization algorithm while computing positions relative to the fixed coordinate system. Simulation results have shown that at a node degree of 9 we get 90% localization with 20% average localization error without using any error refining schemes.

An improved multi-filter fusion indoor localization algorithm based on INS and UWB

With the increasing demand for indoor services based on location information, the importance of achieving accurate indoor positioning has become increasingly prominent. However, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are impacted by non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transmissions when transmitting signals, resulting in decreased positioning accuracy. In contrast, The Inertial Navigation System (INS) operates independently without relying on external data, its positioning results are not affected by NLOS transmission, but it has the problem of error accumulation caused by integration. A joint positioning method combining INS and Ultra-wide band (UWB) is advanced to decrease the influence of NLOS error. When locating target nodes in UWB, an improved fuzzy clustering algorithm is employed to minimize the influence of NLOS transmission. Finally, the Multi-Filter Fusion method is used to fuse the positioning results of INS and UWB to obtain high-precision and robust position information. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm owns better performance compared with existing algorithms.
