During the multi-station TDOA localization, instable or divergent positioning evaluation result, even invalid situation will occur caused by unreasonable sensor allocation, and analyzes the causes of ill-condition in traditional TDOA localization algorithm Therefore, this paper puts forward a kind of stable positioning method based on singular value decomposition modification. The method doesn't require the station allocation greatly and could consider the resolution and variance assessed by positioning parameter effectively. It realizes effective inhibition to the random observation noise in the observation equation and has better engineering application value. The value simulation result indicates the positioning result is more precise and stable than traditional calculating method.

The function and architecture of smart supermarket was studied based on IoT (Internet of Things) technology. An anchor-free localization algorithm for large scale shopping carts was proposed. Specifically, by introducing the procedure of FastMap algorithm, a fast mapping from pairwise proximity matrix between shopping carts to corresponding coordinates was implemented. In this process, location area was divided into different square sub-regions and anchor nodes were placed on the vertex of square as pivot nodes. The output of FastMap algorithm was sent to initialize MDS in order to make stress converge to global minimum quickly. Simulation experiments with 3600 virtual nodes in 600m×600m location area and 10 real shopping carts tests in a supermarket were carried out. All the results show that our algorithm reduces the complexity comparing with classic MDS and random MDS algorithm, also meets the demand of application in supermarket.

The primary phenomena used in sniper detection are acoustic signals from the shock wave generated by a supersonic bullet and the muzzle blast produced by gun powder explosion at the gun muzzle. The algorithm in this paper relies on the time difference of arrival of the muzzle blast and the shock wave received by microphone array. The measured data in this method include the shock wave arrival time and the time intervals between muzzle blast and shock wave detected by each microphone. This set of data is sufficient for identifying the sniper's position. This approach is well suitable for small wearable localization devices with small-space microphone array in which the distance between microphones is short.

This paper presents an practical RSSI based TOA ranging error model (RITEM) for localization algorithm, which can be used to estimate ranging error interval in real time. In RITEM, ranging error is classified into four classes by the RSSI value in TOA ranging process and ranging error of each class always within a certain interval. RITEM is verified by field tests in two typical indoor environments. Then, RITEM is applied into Ranging Error Classification (REC) based TOA localization algorithm to introduce its application methodology. Experiment result indicates that REC algorithm has significantly improved performance in typical indoor environment, comparing with LS, CN-TOAG and Nano localization algorithms.

localization in wireless sensor networks is a main issue, i.e. to determine the position of a given device in the network. Location information of mobile nodes is a demand in many wireless systems. To give the position of the target node reference points have to be used. The node can calculate its distance and/or angle between itself and the reference points. In the 2D space, if a node knows its distance from three reference points its position can also be determined. One more reference point is needed in the 3D space to determine the current position of the target device. In this paper the main localization techniques used in self-organizing sensor networks are described. © 2011 IEEE.

Quantitative comparison of partial discharge localization algorithms using time difference of arrival measurement in substation

Partial discharge (PD) non-contact detection by using antenna array has gained extensive attention in air-insulated substation (AIS) monitoring. One significant superiority is that the positions of PD sources can be located by utilizing the differences of received signals. Also locating electromagnetic/acoustic radiative sources using passive sensor arrays is a continuous theme in the field of radar and sonar, and various localization methods have been developed. In this paper, we mainly concern the time difference localization techniques, which can be classified as maximum-likelihood (ML) and least squares (IS) estimators. The ML estimates positions by maximizing the probability density function, which is a high-nonlinear problem and difficult to be solved. The iteration or simplification solutions are proposed to give approximate ML results. As an alternative, LS estimators which can give closed-form solutions and with high computation efficiency are widely adopted. In this research, the theories and calculation procedures of several kinds of localization algorithms are reviewed, i.e., approximate ML, probability-based method, spherical-interpolation, Chan and squared range-difference LS, and their performances are compared by Monte Carlo simulation and experiments. The results indicate that probability based method presents highest accuracy and computation efficiency. Among other methods, Chan, bias-reduction and squared range-difference provide satisfying localization performance.

This work proposes a new approach to the well-known method bat algorithm for solving the mobile robots global localization problem. The proposed method is leader-based bat algorithm (LBBA). The LBBA uses a small number of better micro-bats as leaders to influence the colony in the search for the best position, dealing satisfactorily with ambiguities during the localization process. The tests covered different scenarios aiming at comparing the proposed algorithm with other methods, such as the standard BA, the particle swarm optimization and particle filter. The results outperformed the compared methods, presenting a fast response and errors below the intended tolerance. The algorithm was tested in the robot kidnapping scenario and shows fast recovery in both simulation and in a real environment. In addition, the proposed technique showed 21% lower average error when compared with an algorithm that presents a variable quantity of particles, i.e. the adaptive Monte Carlo localization algorithm.

Measurement Errors in Range-Based localization algorithms for UAVs: Analysis and Experimentation

Localizing ground devices (GDs) is an important requirement for a wide variety of applications, such as infrastructure monitoring, precision agriculture, search and rescue operations, to name a few. To this end, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones offer a promising technology due to their flexibility. However, the distance measurements performed using a drone, an integral part of a localization procedure, incur several errors that affect the localization accuracy. In this paper, we provide analytical expressions for the impact of different kinds of measurement errors on the ground distance between the UAV and GDs. We review three range-based and three range-free localization algorithms, identify their source of errors, and analytically derive the error bounds resulting from aggregating multiple inaccurate measurements. We then extend the range-free algorithms for improved accuracy. We validate our theoretical analysis and compare the observed localization error of the algorithms after collecting data from a testbed using ten GDs and one drone, equipped with ultra wide band (UWB) antennas and operating in an open field. Results show that our analysis closely matches with experimental localization errors. Moreover, compared to their original counterparts, the extended range-free algorithms significantly improve the accuracy.

The Effects of Stitching Orders in Patch-and-Stitch WSN localization algorithms

A "patch-and-stitch" localization algorithm divides the network into small overlapping subregions. Typically, each subregion consists of a node and all or some of its neighbors. For each subregion, the algorithm builds a local map, called a patch, which is actually an embedding of the nodes it spans in a relative coordinate system. Finally, the algorithm stitches those patches to form a single global map. In a patch-and-stitch algorithm, the stitching order makes an influence on both the performance and the complexity of the algorithm. In this paper, we present a formal framework to deal with stitching orders in patch-and-stitch localization algorithms. In our framework, the stitching order is determined by a stitching scheme and the stitching scheme consists of a stitching policy and a potential function. The potential function is to predict how well a patch will be stitched if patches are stitched according to a given partial order. The stitching policy is a mechanism that determines the stitching order based on the predictions by the potential function. We present various stitching schemes and evaluate them through simulations. In addition, we apply the patch-and-stitch strategy into the anchor-based localization and propose a clustering-based localization algorithm. A potential function is used to partition the network into clusters each of which is centered at an anchor node. For each cluster, a cluster map is constructed via the anchor-free localization algorithm. Then, those cluster maps are combined to form a single global map. We propose a stitching technique for combining those cluster maps and analyze the performance of the algorithm by simulations.

Object localization based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has promising potentials. By combining localization with its identification capability, existing applications can be enhanced and new applications can be developed for this technology. This paper starts with an overview introducing the available technologies for localization with a focus on radio frequency based technologies. The existing and potential applications of RFID localization in various industries are then summarized. Moreover, RFID localization algorithms are reviewed, which can be categorized into multilateration, Bayesian inference, nearest-neighbor, proximity, and kernel-based learning methods. Also, we present a localization case study using passive RFID technology, and it shows that objects can be successfully localized using either multilateration or Bayesian inference methods. The survey also discusses the challenges and future research on RFID localization.
