The profile of innovation driven Italian SMEs and the relationship between the firms' networking abilities and dynamic capabilities

The paper seeks to develop a framework depicting the traits and profile of the innovation driven SMEs operating in the Italian manufacturing sector based on a detailed examination of the existent literature and the findings that emerged from an empirical study carried out within Italian manufacturing SMEs. Two broad research questions guided the empirical work that was carried out within the specific sector: (a) what variables characterize the behavior of the innovation driven firm? (b) what is the relationship (direct/indirect) between the firm's dynamic capabilities and its networking abilities? The empirical evidence emerged from a quantitative research study of 3.500 Italian manufacturing SMEs. Graphical log-linear models were applied to understand the interactions of networking firms and their ability to innovate. The study's findings support that those SMEs that are innovation driven, exhibit specific capabilities.

Application of log-linear models to dengue virus infection patients in Thailand

Dengue is an infectious mosquito-borne viral disease. Dengue or dengue-like epidemics ranks highly among new and newly emerging infectious diseases in public health significance and may affect persons of all ages in dengue endemic area. Dengue virus infections may lead to dengue fever (DF), dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and may lead to hypovolaemic shock (dengue shock syndrome, DSS). The purpose of this study is to identify the associated factors between personal, clinical variables of dengue patients by using log-linear models. Test of independence are used (chi-square and Cramer's V value tests) to find out the association between any two variables. In addition two- and three-dimensional log-linear models are used to obtain estimated parameters and expected frequencies for these models. Amongst the models fitted, the best are chosen based on the analysis of deviance. The results show that most paired variables of personal and clinical variables are significantly related at p-value less than 0.05. For dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) patients, the type of clinic has a strong association with gender, occupation and place of treatment that gave the highest Cramer's V value. In addition, the type of clinic has an association with the status of the last contact. To reduce the outbreak of dengue there should be a control of mosquitoes and for treatment of patients in hospital.© 2013 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

The authors present a Bayesian perspective on graphical marginal log-linear models. They cite five properties that contribute to the increasing attention for novel parameterizations. They examine the saturated model and the two previous models using Dirichlet priors. They also describe a way to estimate the posterior distributions of any marginal long-linear (MLL) parameterization using a simple Monte Carlo scheme.

Register based human population size estimation: a geometric perspective toward assessing sensitivity to unverifiable independence assumptions

Human population size estimation based on capture-recapture methodology is a problem of substantial interest within the field of official statistics. With data sourced from T administrative registers, a log-linear models framework can be used to model the counts of a 2^T–tabulation of the population of interest, where the sum of the estimates for these counts yield an estimate of population size. Within this framework, the structure of the available data affords no ability to estimate a T–way interaction effect. Thus, the standard approach assumes no T–way interaction, even though this may be highly unrealistic in contexts of administrative records on human populations. Given capture-recapture data from two administrative registers, recent work has described a strategy for assessing the sensitivity/robustness of the classic population size estimate to deviations in the odds-ratio away from one (the value under independence). In this work, we generalize this strategy to the setting of data from T administrative registers. Moreover, we introduce a univariate sensitivity quantifier that is novel, geometrically motivated, and easy to interpret. This quantifier, which is supported on the interval (0, 1), measures the sensitivity of the classic capture-recapture population size estimate to deviations in the true value of the order–T odds ratio away from one (the value under no T–way interaction). Taking advantage of our proposed sensitivity quantifier, we outline an alternative sensitivity assessment strategy; and, we demonstrate its use through several illustrative examples. The approach we propose is simple in its interpretation and computationally straightforward, making it attractive for use by practitioners.

Does crowding influence emergency department treatment time and disposition?

ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine whether crowding influences treatment times and disposition decisions for emergency department (ED) patients. MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study at 2 hospitals from January 1, 2014, to July 1, 2014. Adult ED visits with dispositions of discharge, admission, or transfer were included. Treatment times were modeled by linear regression with log-transformation;disposition decisions (admission or transfer vs discharge) were modeled by logistic regression. Both models adjusted for chief complaint, Emergency Severity Index (ESI), and 4 crowding metrics in quartiles: waiting count, treatment count, boarding count, and National Emergency Department Overcrowding Scale. ResultsWe included 21,382 visits at site A (12.9% excluded) and 29,193 at site B (15.0% excluded). Respective quartiles of treatment count increased treatment times by 7.1%, 10.5%, and 13.3% at site A (P < 0.001) and by 4.0%, 6.5%, and 10.2% at site B (P < 0.001). The fourth quartile of treatment count increased estimates of treatment time for patients with chest pain and ESI level 2 from 2.5 to 2.9 hours at site A (20 minutes) and from 3.0 to 3.3 hours at site B (18 minutes). Treatment times decreased with quartiles of waiting count by 5.6%, 7.2%, and 7.3% at site B (P < 0.001). Odds of admission or transfer increased with quartiles of waiting count by 8.7%, 9.6%, and 20.3% at site A (P = 0.011) and for the third (11.7%) and fourth quartiles (27.3%) at site B (P < 0.001). ConclusionsLocal crowding influenced ED treatment times and disposition decisions at 2 hospitals after adjusting for chief complaint and ESI.

Evaluation of missing data mechanisms in two and three dimensional incomplete tables

The analysis of incomplete contingency tables is a practical and an interesting problem. In this paper, we provide characterizations for the various missing mechanisms of a variable in terms of response and non-response odds for two and three dimensional incomplete tables. log-linear parametrization and some distinctive properties of the missing data models for the above tables are discussed. All possible cases in which data on one, two or all variables may be missing are considered. We study the missingness of each variable in a model, which is more insightful for analyzing cross-classified data than the missingness of the outcome vector. For sensitivity analysis of the incomplete tables, we propose easily verifiable procedures to evaluate the missing at random (MAR), missing completely at random (MCAR) and not missing at random (NMAR) assumptions of the missing data models. These methods depend only on joint and marginal odds computed from fully and partially observed counts in the tables, respectively. Finally, some real-life datasets are analyzed to illustrate our results, which are confirmed based on simulation studies. (C) 2018 The Korean Statistical Society. Published by Elsevier B.V. Evaluating the Impact of Infrastructure Interdependencies on the Emergency Services Sector and Critical Support Functions Using an Expert Opinion Survey

The vulnerability of critical infrastructure systems and their interdependencies have long-standing implications for community recovery and resilience. Extant research on critical infrastructure interdependencies has focused primarily on the infrastructure systems themselves and has paid less attention to the impact of infrastructure breakdowns on critical services in disasters. This study aims at analyzing the impact of infrastructure interdependencies on the emergency services sector (ESS) and critical support functions using an expert opinion survey of emergency managers, city planners, utility providers, and other stakeholders from two study regions: South Florida and parts of New York (NY), New Jersey (NJ), and Eastern Pennsylvania (PA). The majority of the survey respondents identified the loss of power as the most important factor affecting service delivery in their respective sector. Over 70% reported that loss of communications considerably impacted computer-aided dispatch (CAD) capabilities for the coordination of emergency services, dispatch of ambulances, and other medically equipped vehicles, as well as responders' ability to continue their work. A comparison of individual service categories by type of infrastructure disruption and region revealed that there was a similar level of agreement among the respondents regarding the importance of backup power. There is a statistically significant difference in stakeholder responses regarding lack of adequate fuel supply with the stakeholders in the NY-NJ-PA study region more concerned about fuel availability than their counterparts in South Florida. The use of log-linear models to analyze key interdependencies between the ESS and critical infrastructures reveals conditional dependencies with statistically significant associations between critical infrastructure services and coordination of emergency response, access to health services, sheltering, and postdisaster evacuation. Educational assortative mating: a micro-educational approach

This article presents a new way of analysing educational assortative mating patterns, using a detailed 'micro-educational' classification capturing both hierarchical and horizontal forms of educational differentiation. Taking advantage of rich Danish population data, we apply log-linear models that include four ways of measuring educational homogamy patterns: (a) by returns to education, (b) by macro-education (five aggregated levels), (c) by field of study (16 categories), and (d) by a disaggregated micro-educational classification, combining levels and fields of study (54 groups). Our results show declines in educational homogamy from 1984 to 2013, but the odds ratios of being educationally homogamous at the university college and university levels remain of substantial magnitude, by both the macro- and micro-educational measures. The micro-educational classification outperforms all other measures in explaining the associations in the homogamy tables. The income measure ('returns to education') does a particularly poor job of explaining homogamy patterns from 1984 to 2013.

This versatile topic goes back to the inventions of Gauss, Markov, and Gibbs, whose ideas are incorporated in graphical models and regression graphs. Later, the geneticist S. Wright (1923-1934) and the philosopher and computer scientist J. Pearl (1986-1987) developed the tools, but their notation is too complicated to formulate the mathematical background. Here we mainly follow the up-to-date discussion of statisticians S. Lauritzen and N. Wermuth, and try to juxtapose the directed-undirected and discrete-continuous cases.

A New Lens on High School Dropout: Use of Correspondence Analysis and the Statewide Longitudinal Data System

The combination of log-linear models and correspondence analysis have long been used to decompose contingency tables and aid in their interpretation. Until now, this approach has not been applied to the education Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS), which contains administrative school data at the student level. While some research has been conducted using the SLDS, its primary use is for state education administrative reporting. This article uses the combination of log-linear models and correspondence analysis to gain insight into high school dropouts in two discrete regions in Kentucky, Appalachia and non-Appalachia, defined by the American Community Survey. The individual student records from the SLDS were categorized into one of the two regions and a log-linear model was used to identify the interactions between the demographic characteristics and the dropout categories, push-out and pull-out. Correspondence analysis was then used to visualize the interactions with the expanded push-out categories, boredom, course selection, expulsion, failing grade, teacher conflict, and pull-out categories, employment, family problems, illness, marriage, and pregnancy to provide insights into the regional differences. In this article, we demonstrate that correspondence analysis can extend the insights gained from SDLS data and provide new perspectives on dropouts.
