The injury epidemiology of adult riders in vehicle-two-wheeler crashes in China, Ningbo, 2011-2015

Introduction: We used road crashes between vehicles and two-wheelers from Yinzhou District Ningbo in 2011-2015 from the China In-depth Accident Study (CIDAS) as sample cases. The risk factors of different injury severity grades were analyzed. Method: The classification tree model was used to screen the possible interaction items, and the corresponding regression model was constructed according to the results of the tree model to explore the influencing factors of cyclist injury. Results: The road types, weather types, gender, age of the riders, and vehicle speed were significantly correlated with the dependent variables. The interaction effect of gender*road type, weather*age, weather*speed and speed*age were obtained through a tree model. Conclusions: The risk of male casualties at the crossroads was 3.31 times higher than that of female casualties at the straight roads. On sunny days, the risk of crash casualties in Ningbo was low, and the fatality risk when the speed reached 38 km/h was 10%. Under the interaction effect of weather and age, the fatality risk in cloudy/-foggy and rainy days was almost coincident, and the serious risk in cloudy/foggy conditions was the highest. Practical applications: Through factor analysis, it is confirmed that there is interaction effect among the factors, and it can provide reference for relevant departments to formulate more targeted and effective governance strategies. Study on influencing factors for occupant window-opening behavior: Case study of an office building in Xi'an during the transition season

Window-opening behavior profoundly affects indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and the energy consumption of HVAC systems in office buildings. This paper presents the results of a field study on manual window control conducted in five typical individual offices in the building of a research institute in the city of Xi'an, located in the cold region of China. The average duration of window-open and window-closed states was 5.3 h/day and 6.7 h/day during working hours, respectively, and thus the window-open state accounted for 44% of the total duration during the transition season. Unlike previous studies, the results show that once a window was opened when occupants first come to the office, it would not be left like that for long, until the occupants left the office at the end of day. In addition, window opening behavior is more strongly correlated with indoor PM2.5 concentration and indoor temperature. A new algorithm has been developed that applies dummy variables based on a binary logistic to provide a more accurate description of the relationship between the window state and influencing factors at different levels. The proposed model increased the prediction accuracy of the window being open by 5.9% compared to the continuous variable model. This study focuses on understanding the characteristics of window operation and establishing a more accurate model that offers suitable data and theoretical support for applications to simulate energy consumption in office building.

Background:Adoption of organic fertilization is low among farmers in rural areas of Ethiopia, affecting yields and general food security in the region. This study aimed to identify the determinants of the utilization of organic fertilizers among smallholder farmers in the South Gondar Zone, Amhara National Regional State (ANRS), Northwest Ethiopia. Methods:A community-based cross-sectional study was used among smallholder farmers in the South Gondar Zone, ANRS, Northwest Ethiopia. Primary data were collected from 420 sample respondents using multistage sampling with a combination of both simple random and cluster sampling techniques. The binary logistic regression model was used to assess the use of organic fertilizers among smallholder farmers in the South Gondar Zone. The results are presented as adjusted odds ratios (AOR) together with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results:head of household age (AOR = 1.099, 95% CI 1.018-1.187), married marital status (AOR = 10.506, 95% CI 1.355-81.427), literate head of household (AOR = 3.323, 95% CI 1.571-7.029), number of laborers (AOR = 1.442, 95% CI 1.060-1.962), farming experience (AOR = 1.132, 95% CI 1.041-1.232), farm size (AOR = 1.063, 95% CI 1.008-1.121), and number of livestock (AOR = 1.368, 95% CI 1.115-1.677) were positively associated with the utilization of organic fertilizer while single marital status (AOR = 0.062, 95% CI 0.004-0.851), cost of laborer (AOR = 0.965, 95% CI 0.951-0.978), household income (AOR = 0.880, 95% CI 0.824-0.939), medium soil fertility (AOR = 0.039, 95% CI 0.007-0.229), fertile soil (AOR = 0.020, 95% CI 0.003-0.120), and home to farm distance (AOR = 0.219, 95% CI 0.067-0.717) were negatively associated with the utilization of organic fertilizer. Conclusions:This finding showed that multiple variables have an effect to determining the use of organic fertilizer by smallholder farmers. The article represents the results of using the data mining algorithms to determine probability of occurrence migraine symptoms related to changes of menstrual cycle parameters in women of reproductive age. The analysis was carried out on the basis of logistic regression models, developed by three different methods. Relations between menstrual amount changes, regularity cycle and onset of migraine symptoms were determined. Sensitivity and specificity of developed model was counted. Its quality assessment was appraised by means of ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristics) analysis.

Socio-economic situation and substance use disorder influences on safety practices among truckers

Background: The study examined the nexus between Social Economic Situation (SES) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and the influence the two exerted on willingness to comply with Health Safety and Environment (HSE) guiding the conveyance of petroleum products among truckers in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria. Methods: Multistage and simple random sampling techniques were utilized to obtain the 265 respondents who are professional haulers and necessary information on the study objectives were obtained through self-reporting designed questionnaire. Bivariate statistical analysis and logistic regression model were also used in ascertaining the existence of relationships among the dependent and independent variables. Results: The result from the bivariate analysis showed the existence of an association between two SES variables of age [X² (9) 17.05, p=0.04] and literacy level[X2 (9) 41.36 p=0.00] and SUD. While the marital status of the respondents did not significantly influence the incidences of SUD [X² (9) 9.841 p=0.36].Furthermore, a logistic regression model (LRM) examined the relationship between dichotomous dependent variable (compliance or non-compliance to HSE stipulations guiding the conveyance of petroleum products) and the different independent explanatory variables (Age, Marital Status, Educational Status and SUD). The Wald criterion demonstrated that marital status (p=.000), educational status (p=.000) and attitude to SUD (p=.000) all made significant contributions to the prediction (compliance) while age (p=.861) was not a significant predictor. Conclusion: The study recommends the importance of non-economic factors (like literacy and marital status) in the achievement of sustainable HSE stipulations guiding the conveyance of petroleum products. © 2020 Ajayi and Mazinyo.

This paper is aimed at identifying the risk factors that mainly contribute to reckless driving and other related causes of road accidents along the Douala-Dschang highway of Cameroon. The research work started with the collection of accident reports for 2018 and 2019 from security officials in charge of road safety and the police stations of the different localities included in the sample of the study. Three hundred and eighty-two (382) road accidents reports were collected and analyzed using the 2020 version logit regression model of XLSTAT. From these analyses, it appears that, of the 382 accidents recorded during this period, six factors were identified and classified as follows: causes of accidents related to speed and carelessness, location of the accident, type of vehicle at fault, day the accident occurred, time of the accident and the age of drivers involved. These results could contribute to reduce the gravity of accidents along the Douala-Dschang highway and develop other policies in the program for road safety. In addition, this study can as much as possible equally contribute to reorienting road construction trends and development techniques in our environment.

Improved window adaptive gray level co-occurrence matrix for extraction and analysis of texture characteristics of pulmonary nodules

Background and Objective: Identifying benign and malignant pulmonary nodules is essential for the early diagnosis of lung cancer and targeted surgical resection. This study aimed to differentiate benign from malignant pulmonary nodules based on computed tomography (CT) plain scan texture analysis technique. Methods: A total of 47 pulmonary nodules use the improved window adaptive gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) algorithm to extract the texture characteristics of the area of interest. The Fisher coefficient (Fisher), classification error probability joint average correlation coefficient (POE + ACC), mutual information (MI), and the combination of above three methods joint (FPM) were used to select the best texture parameters set. After that, the analysis of the screened texture parameters was adopted. The B11 module provides four analytical methods, including raw data analysis (RDA), principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and nonlinear discriminant analysis (NDA). The results were expressed in the form of misclassification rate (MCR). Region of curve (ROC) analysis was also performed on the selected optimal texture parameters. Results: The MCR of all the three texture feature extraction methods, Fisher, POE + ACC, and MI, were lower in differentiating benign from malignant pulmonary nodules. FPM method could further reduce the MCR. The NDA analysis had the lowest MCR for both of these three feature extraction methods. The MCR can be further reduced to 2.13% by the combination of NDA and FPM. The ROC curve showed that Perc.01% parameter had the highest AUC value and the most discriminative efficacy. Conclusion: The lowest MCR values were calculated by the FPM dimensionality reduction method and the NDA analysis method. The improved GLCM algorithm has a discriminative role in CT texture analysis of benign and malignant pulmonary nodules. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The prevalence and factors associated with depressive symptoms among tertiary level students in Bangladesh: A survey in Rajshahi district

Background: Depression is a common problem around the world that increases the risk of unhealthy lifestyle behavior. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of depressive symptoms among tertiary level (college) students in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 400 college students in Rajshahi district. Samples were collected using two-stage random sampling. Nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to measure depressive symptoms of tertiary level students. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and its associated factors. A value of p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant in the analysis. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms among tertiary level students was 30.7%, with a greater proportion in urban (40.70%) than rural (21.40%) areas of Rajshahi district. A binary logistic regression model established five main factors of depressive symptoms among tertiary level students in Bangladesh: (1) family members ≤4 (AOR= 2.27;CI: 1.21–4.26, p<0.05);(ii) BMI status [underweight (AOR= 1.70;CI: 1.05–2.74, p<0.05) and overweight (AOR= 5.91;CI: 2.42–14.43, p<0.10)];(iii) migraine (AOR: 3.35;CI: 1.75–6.43, p<0.05);(iv) existence of chronic disease (AOR= 1.96;CI, 1.04–3.70, p<0.05);and (v) illiterate mothers (AOR= 2.38;CI, 1.16–4.86, p<0.05). Conclusions: About one-third of the tertiary level students were suffering from depressive symptoms in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. Some prevention programs like school-based counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal approaches, and family-based prevention strategies should be taken for preventing depressive symptoms of adolescent students;our findings would help for this purpose. © 2022

A water shortage risk predicting model through estimating mutual information values between risk and risk factors

It is of great importance to predict or assess the water shortage risk to take some effective measures to reduce risk and losses. A new method of selecting water shortage risk factors is proposed according to the definition of a matrix-based Renyi's alpha-order entropy in this paper. Important factors were detected in terms of the values of mutual information between water shortage risk and risk factors. Furthermore, a logistic regression model is built to predict water shortage risk. Risks in Beijing during the period of 1979-2017 are evaluated to verify the performance of the model. Water consumption per GDP, water resources per capita and precipitation are the sensitive factors for water shortage risk. Water shortage risks in 2020 under different situations of precipitation are calculated by using the model. The result shows that the water shortage risk is greater than 0.9 with a possibility of 0.56 and greater than 0.5 with a possibility of 0.56 without consideration of the transferred and reclaimed water use. The average water shortage risk declines considerably by using the transferred and reclaimed water. However, the water shortage risk still exceeds 0.9 with a possibility of 0.32. The predicted risks are consistent with the observed risks in 2020 under different conditions of precipitation.
