Although the main objective of geoparks is to protect and preserve geological heritage, over recent years, touristic use of these parks has become a major tool of economic development. According to UNESCO, geoparks (protected areas containing a highly important geological heritage, rarity, or aesthetic aspect) should have educational and touristic orientations, in addition to their intrinsic protective purpose. In terms of tourism, geoparks have a strong differentiating factor, given their scarcity, rarity, and/or exceptional nature. However, tourism in geoparks demands an extensive knowledge of the demand (geotourists), since this knowledge is vital for the design of development, promotion, and commercialization strategies. Therefore, the objective of this work is to estimate the probability of practicing geotourism in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark (Extremadura, Spain) through the use of a binary logistic regression model. For this, sociodemographic explanatory variables (gender, age), travel characteristics (type of travel group, lodging), and destination assessment (lodging, dining, service companies, natural conservation) characteristics are considered. Furthermore, control variables are introduced in the logistic model to determine whether or not this probability is (or is not) conditioned by the tourism season (high season vs low season).

Higher urinary nitrate was associated with lower prevalence of congestive heart failure: results from NHANES

Background Some studies have reported that nitrate intake from vegetables was inversely associated with many vascular diseases, but few studies have paid attention to the relationship between urinary nitrate and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the connections between urinary nitrate and prevalence of CVDs. Methods The data of this study was collected from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Finally, several years' data of NHANES were merged into 14,894 observations. logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between urinary nitrate and CVDs by using the "survey" package in R software (version 3.2.3). Results In the univariable logistic analysis, significant association was discovered between urinary nitrate and congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction (all P < 0.001). By adjusting related covariates, the multivariable logistic analysis showed that the significant association only existed between urinary nitrate and congestive heart failure (OR = 0.651, 95% CI 0.507-0.838, P < 0.001). Compared to Q1 urinary nitrate level as reference, the risk for prevalent heart failure diminished along with increasing levels of urinary nitrates, (OR of Q2 level = 0.633, 95% CI 0.403-0.994), (OR of Q3 level = 0.425, 95% CI 0.230-0.783), (OR of Q4 level = 0.375, 95% CI 0.210-0.661), respectively. Moreover, urinary nitrate levels were associated with congestive heart failure in a dose-dependent manner in both 20-60 years group, 60+ years group and male, female group (P < 0.001, P = 0.011 and P = 0.009, P = 0.004). Conclusions Independent of related covariates, higher urinary nitrate was associated with lower prevalent congestive heart failure.

This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the discarded semen of boars. A total of 176,368 ejaculates of boars from nine Al centers were collected from January 2013 to May 2016 in Southern China. The criteria for determining whether their semen was abnormal included cytoplasmic droplets, coiling tail, sperm agglutination, impurity, poor motility, oligozoospermia, necrozoospermia, azoospermia, and hemospermia. The cause of discarded semen was evaluated with a Chi-square test, and the effects of housing type, breed, age at collection, season identified in the northern hemisphere, and age at herd entry of the discarded semen of boars were analyzed with a logistic regression model. Results indicated the proportion of the discarded semen (PDS) in the nine Al centers was 13.09%. Chi-square test showed the greatest PDS among all causes was found in semen discarded due to cytoplasmic droplets (31.60%), followed by impurity (25.96%), sperm agglutination (20.31%), coiling tail (17.72%), oligozoospermia (10.86%), and others (6.78%;P < 0.0001). logistic regression analysis revealed the PDS was affected by all these five factors (P < 0.0001). The PDS of boars raised individually in stalls was greater than that of boars raised individually in pens (OR: 1.657;95% CI: 1.607 to 1.709). The PDSs of Duroc boars (OR: 1.130;95% CI: 1.093 to 1.167) and Yorkshire boars (OR: 1.432;95% CI: 1.380 to 1.486) were greater than that of Landrace boars. The PDSs of adult boars (aged from 13 to 24 mo, from 25 to 36 mo, and more than 37 mo with OR: 0.800, 0.941, and 0.838, respectively;95% CI: 0.771 to 0.831, 0.902 to 0.983, and 0.790 to 0.889, respectively) were lower than those of young boars (aged less than 12 mo). The PDSs of semen collected in summer (OR: 1.367;95% CI: 1.314 to 1.422), autumn (OR: 1.185;95% CI: 1.138 to 1.234), and winter (OR: 1.159;95% CI: 1.115 to 1.206) were greater than those of semen obtained in spring. Coal-to-gas heating compensation standard and willingness to make clean energy choices in typical rural areas of northern China

The implementation of the coal-to-gas (C2G) project is the key to achieving the transition to clean energy and improving air quality in rural areas in the north of China. Based on the survey data of 374 households in the town of Mishan, which is in the city of Jincheng in Shanxi Province, the C2G heating compensation standard was calculated using the minimum data method, and the key factors affecting farmers' choice of clean energy were analyzed using logistic regression models. The results were as follows. (i) The C2G project almost doubled the heating expenditure of farmers. (ii) When the compensation standard increased, the ratio of newly added C2G heating area and newly reduced pollutant emissions increased non-linearly. To achieve an environmental goal of reducing particulate matter by 40%, the government will need to compensate each household by 3.56 CNY/m(2) per month, which is 1.35 times the current compensation standard. When the monthly compensation is 9 CNY/m(2), the comprehensive best economic and environmental benefits can be achieved. (iii) The per capita annual income of households and the permanent population of households are the most significant variables affecting farmers' choice of clean energy. Introducing environmental perception variables, such as adaptive efficacy perception and self-efficacy perception, can help to identify the willingness of farmers to choose clean energy.

The Use of a Park and Ride System-A Case Study Based on the City of Cracow (Poland)

The park and ride (P&R) parking type is usually located near peripheral public transport stops. These parking places are dedicated to people who, after leaving their vehicle in the parking, continue their journey to the city center using some form of public transport such as bus, metro, rail or tram systems. This article aims to examine the features associated with P&R parking locations in use in Cracow (Poland). The analysis included the number of entries and exits to and from parking during particular periods of the day, week and year, parking time of vehicles, and parking space use. A parking peak hour factor was also calculated, which expresses the crowding degree of vehicle entries/exits in/out parking during a particular period. In addition, the paper presents an analysis of factors determining users to P&R parking use. In the modeling process, logit models were used, which, as stated after analyzing the literature on the subject, were already used in various countries around the world to describe the behavior of P&R parking users. However, so far, such research relating to Polish conditions has been not published in the available literature. The obtained results allowed to state that the most important factors determining the likelihood of using P&R parking in Cracow are age, number of years having a driving license, monthly income (gross), and an average number of trips made during a day. Other variables, which not included in the study, can influence the P&R parking use. However, the presented results are the basis for conducting furtherer, more in-depth analyses based on a larger number of independent variables that may determine the P&R parking use.

Relevance of sex, age and gait kinematics when predicting fall-risk and mortality in older adults

Approximately one-third of elderly people fall each year with severe consequences, including death. The aim of this study was to identify the most relevant features to be considered to maximize the accuracy of a logistic regression model designed for prediction of fall/mortality risk among older people. This study included 261 adults, aged over 65 years. Men and women were analyzed separately because sex stratification was revealed as being essential for our purposes of feature ranking and selection. Participants completed a 3-m walk test at their own gait velocity. An inertial sensor attached to their lumbar spine was used to record acceleration data in the three spatial directions. Signal processing techniques allowed the extraction of 21 features representative of gait kinematics, to be used as predictors to train and test the model. Age and gait speed data were also considered as predictors. A set of 23 features was considered. These features demonstrate to be more or less relevant depending on the sex of the cohort under analysis and the classification label (risk of falls and mortality). In each case, the minimum size subset of relevant features is provided to show the maximum accuracy prediction capability. Gait speed has been largely used as the single feature for the prediction fall risk among older adults. Nevertheless, prediction accuracy can be substantially improved, reaching 70% in some cases, if the task of training and testing the model takes into account some other features, namely, sex, age and gait kinematic parameters. Therefore we recommend considering sex, age and step regularity to predict fall-risk. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fog, Temperature and Air Quality Over the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo: a Trend Analysis from 1998 to 2018

This study investigates the long-term development of fog occurrences in the Metropolitan Area of Sao Paulo (MASP). Specifically, it analyzes the roles of meteorological and air quality parameters as potential drivers for fog formation. A dataset reaching back to the year 1933 shows that the overall trends of the annual fog occurrences (AFO) coincide with those of the annual mean temperature. Air quality data have been available since 1998, allowing us to perform a statistical analysis of the contributions of meteorology and air quality to AFO for the period from 1998 to 2018. The logistic regression model shows that the binary dependent variable (daily fog occurrence, FO) is explained by its independent predictors PM10, relative humidity (rH), and daily minimum temperature (T-min), in that order. FO was not found to be significantly influenced by atmospheric pressure (aP) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). While the influence of SO(2)was minor and associated with less confidence, it was negative. Potential causes for these surprising results are discussed. We conclude that the parameters PM10, rH, and T(min)are significant drivers of fog formation in the MASP, whereby the total explanatory power of the drivers for the dichotomous variable FO is 16%.

A mass spectrometry database for identification of saponins in plants

Saponins constitute an important class of secondary metabolites of the plant kingdom. Here, we present a mass spectrometry-based database for rapid and easy identification of saponins henceforth referred to as saponin mass spectrometry database (SMSD). With a total of 4196 saponins, 214 of which were obtained from commercial sources. Through liquid chromatography-tandem high-resolution/mass spectrometry (HR/MS) analysis under negative ion mode, the fragmentation behavior for all parent fragment ions almost conformed to successive losses of sugar moieties, alpha-dissociation and McLafferty rearrangement of aglycones in high-energy collision induced dissociation. The saccharide moieties produced sugar fragment ions from m/z (monosaccharide) to m/z (polysaccharides). The parent and sugar fragment ions of other saponins were predicted using the above mentioned fragmentation pattern. The SMSD is freely accessible at http://47.92.73.208:8082/or http://*** (preferrably using google). It provides three search modes ("CLASSIFY", "SEARCH" and "METABOLITE"). Under the "CLASSIFY" function, saponins are classified with high predictive accuracies from all metabolites by establishment of logistic regression model through their mass data from HR/MS input as a csv file, where the first column is ID and the second column is mass. For the "SEARCH" function, saponins are searched against parent ions with certain mass tolerance in "MS Ion Search". Then, daughter ions with certain mass tolerance are input into "MS/MS Ion Search". The optimal candidates were screened out according to the match count and match rate values in comparison with fragment data in database. Additionally, another logistic regression model completely differentiated between parent and sugar fragment ions. This function designed in front web is conducive to search and recheck. Aim This study sought to identify and discuss the major issues and emerging practices in child discipline in Ghanaian homes. Subject and methods Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey Round 4 dataset drawn from a nationwide sample of 8156 households, the analysis took into consideration the hierarchical structure of the data to provide in-depth analysis of the drivers and risk factors of child discipline in Ghana. Specifically, the study looked at the relationship between the key response variable and covariates investigated, along with the responses and context in which the measurements were done. Results Contextual effects on the variations in household responses across the different levels of the data structure were significant at the regional level, but not at the residence level (urban/rural settings). Conclusion There was strong evidence that household wealth index and number of children aged 2-14 in a household have a significant influence on household approval for the use of physical discipline in child upbringing.

Demand-side Factors for Financial Inclusion: A Cross-country Empirical Analysis

The importance of an inclusive financial system in the overall growth and economic development of a nation is well recognized. While most studies on financial inclusion use supply-side data, this article presents a demand-side analysis of factors associated with financial inclusion. Making use of a large cross-country data on financial inclusion status and individual characteristics of adult individuals, we econometrically establish that individual characteristics and economic circumstances play very significant role in determining financial inclusion of adult individuals, after taking into account other factors of the country. The article uses three indicators of financial inclusion and several explanatory variables such as country-specific factor (gross domestic product [GDP] per capita), individual characteristics and individual economic circumstances of adult individuals from different countries. We find that in general, being woman, less educated, jobless and poor are negatively associated with financial inclusion of individuals. Enhanced level of education and income, in general, enhances likelihood of financial inclusion. These findings should be taken into account while formulating policies towards promotion of financial inclusion. © 2019 Jawaharlal Nehru University.
