Impact of corporate sustainability reporting on firm performance: an empirical examination in Asia

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of corporate sustainability reporting on firm performance in four Asian countries - Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and India - and to find out whether there is any significant difference between developed and developing countries of Asia with respect to the impact of such reporting on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on 36 listed nonfinancial companies from Japan, 28 from India, 26 from South Korea and 21 from Indonesia respectively, from 2009 to 2014. Content analysis (binary -0 and 1) is used to calculate the disclosure score of sustainability performance, based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) format. The outcome of the content analysis is further used to examine the impact of corporate sustainability reporting on firm performance employing a logistic regression model. Findings The study finds that the average level of disclosure is more in the case of Japanese companies (90 per cent), followed by India (88 per cent) and South Korea (85 per cent). On the other hand, the average level of disclosure is only 72 per cent for Indonesian firms. regression results depict a significant positive association between sustainability reporting and firm's performance. The study further finds that the relative impact of sustainability reporting on firm performance is more in developed countries than in developing countries of Asia. Originality/value This is the first comprehensive study in Asian context to examine the impact of the level of corporate sustainability disclosure on the firm performance by using the logistic regression model. The outcome of this study would not only help the corporate managers but also the policymakers to make a valuable decision, which will eventually contribute to the objectives of sustainable development.

We examine the issue of student dropout rates by developing a method to classify students as being in either a "preliminary dropout" state or a "normal" state based on the student's learning data (student history, GPA, etc.). A preliminary dropout state is a state in which it is likely that the student will drop out but has not yet done so;a normal state is a state in which the student is not likely to drop out. Although dropout commonly results once a student is in the preliminary dropout state, there are cases where making an effective qualitative change can produce a return to the normal state. We define this as a good state change and analyze its distinguishing features.

The motor capability of a human is an essential factor to perform various tasks. In most cases, a person with health problems such as diabetes is observed to have a declining motor functions. When this declining motor function is not monitored, this may result to severe health problems that may lead to death. There have been many studies that allow the observation and analysis of the gait movement of a person whether he is in static or dynamic state. However, to accurately observe the person's condition, health monitoring is needed. But most monitoring techniques introduced are limited to a certain space and time making it inconvenient for patients and medical practitioners. Thus, this paper will focus on implementing an IoT-based smart system capable of managing, interpreting and storing data from the patient's gait pattern through Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. The main contribution of this study is the ability to differentiate whether the person is in static or dynamic motion for that certain period of time and creates a storage of these classifications.

Factors causing aberrant driving behaviors: A model of problem drivers in China

The motive of this study was to investigate the aberrant driving behaviors of "problem drivers" who had more violations and accidents, measure the characteristics of them, and explore the factors that make them problem drivers. A questionnaire that measures driving behaviors, driving attitudes, driving skills, and personality characteristics was implemented via the Internet, to problem drivers (frequent violations or more accidents) and safe drivers (fewer violations or accidents). A logistic regression model was employed to explore what kinds of drivers had more traffic violations or accidents. Results showed that age and frequency of driving were significantly correlated with their violations and accidents. Problem drivers have poor driving skills and tend to drive faster, which leading to more violations. Attitudes toward bicycle riding also had a significant effect on Chinese drivers' driving behaviors. However, the two groups did not show significant differences on personality characteristics. The results suggested that attitude and driving skill were significant factors that influence penalty points and accidents of drivers in China. This research can provide guidance in driving behavior modification and traffic safety education. Behaviors of drivers in China may become safer if their skills can be improved and their attitudes toward traffic safety are changed.

In the contemporary society where people's thinking is liberalized and the division of labor is gradually refined, the importance of communication is even more prominent. As a solid bridge for communication, gatherings have become an optimum way for college students to communicate their feelings and enrich their extra-curriculum life. The aim of our study is to obtain the information of college students' party participation situation and preference using Ad libitum sampling method. Empirical studies were conducted with first-hand data. Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis to detect different party behavior influenced by students' gender and personality. According to the fundamental principle of binary logistic regression model, we did multivariate analysis in assessing the correlation between students' background information and their dress up behavior. The log-linear model is used to study the difference between personality differences and the willing to attend large party, so as to better understand the behaviors and psychological changes of college students. Based on the above analysis, we can effectively deal with the problems that arise at their social life and bring up feasible suggestions. This is of great significance to the psychological guidance and education of college students.

This study focuses on the forest fire risk assessing using entirely remote sensing derived variables. These variables include Fuel moisture content (FMC), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Leaf Area Index (LAI), Elevation and Slope. The Difference and Anomaly of FMC in time series are also calculated since FMC is one of the critical factors in assessing the wildfire risk. The logistic regression model is used to integrate all the variables in the fire occurred and none-occurred areas to derive the Fire Risk Index (FRI). A case study of the above methodology is applied to assess the FRI in Yunnan Province in China. The result shows that the AUC is to 0.8 for grassland and 0.81 for woodland, which indicates the good performance of the presented methodology in assessing forest fire risk.

In the literature on asymmetric warfare, a great deal of disagreement and contradictory theories have arisen concerning factors affecting the outcomes of war. In an attempt to resolve the discrepancies among these theories, this thesis surveys why there is no single theory that adequately explains which factors affect the outcomes of asymmetric wars. Using logistic regression models and statistical analysis for asymmetric conflicts occurring between 1945 and 2015, the thesis explores the effects of three independent variables: the number of actors offering external support to the non-state actor, the duration of the conflict, the regime type of the strong actor; and two control variables: gross domestic product and population, on the result of the conflicts. The thesis concludes that the number of external supporters to the non-state actor increases their probability of winning; that the increasing duration of the conflict also increases their probability of winning; that the probability of the democratic strong actor winning the conflict will decrease much faster than for a non-democratic strong actor; and that democratic strong actors have a higher probability of winning against weak actors than do non-democratic actors in asymmetric wars. The approach presented in the thesis provides a new perspective to analyze factors that affect the outcomes of asymmetric conflicts, which may lead to a better general understanding of the outcomes of wars.

The present study was conducted to analyze economics of poplar cultivation and its adoption behaviour in Punjab based on primary data collected from a sample of 60 adopters and 32 non-adopters of agro-forestry from 4 clusters of villages from Ludhiana and Ropar districts of Punjab state pertaining to year 2013-14. Two types of agro-forestry systems AFS-I (wheat + kharif fodder during 1st four years of poplar cultivation) and AFS-II (sugarcane for first two years and wheat during 3-4 years) were identified. The establishment cost on per acre basis was estimated at `8,034, `7,731, `7,849 and `7,871 for small, medium, large and overall farm size categories. The operational cost was worked out at `3,724 per acre during 1- 4 years and `2,919 per acre during 5-6 years of plantation in AFS-I on overall basis. The operational cost in AFS-II on overall basis was estimated at `1,904 during 1-2 years, `5,071 during 3-4 years and `3,630 during 5-6 years of poplar plantation on per acre basis. Returns varied directly with farm size and age of harvesting. The per acre net returns were `2,02,463, `2,05,283 and `2,29,720 in AFS-I and `2,19,015, `1,78,832 and `2,00,639 in AFS-II at 4th, 5th and 6th years of harvesting on overall basis. Returns from wheat-paddy crop rotation cultivated by non-adopter farmers varied directly with farm size and average net returns were `40,744 per acre. The annuity value of net present worth in poplar cultivation estimated at 12 per cent discount rate was higher than net returns from wheat-paddy cultivation indicating poplar cultivation was more profitable than wheat-paddy cultivation. The benefit-cost ratio was the highest at 5th year of harvesting in case of AFS-I and AFS-II. Age, education and extension contacts of the sample farmers was positively correlated with adoption behavior, whereas working members in agriculture and off-farm income was negatively correlated with the adoption behaviour of poplar cultivation.

Technological innovation is the power and source of enterprise development. According to the fundamental principle of logistic regression model, the paper did a principle component analysis of the selected indicators system to get the value of the dependent variable in the logistic regression model. Then, empirical studies were conducted with relevant data, getting the logistic regression formula to divide the enterprises into non-innovative enterprises and innovation enterprises with significantly high accuracy rate, and the analysis of the factors affecting technological innovation capability was carried out. We conclude that logistic regression model is an effective method for enterprise technological innovation capability research.
