E-learning systems have major benefits but also pose major challenges. One of these is how to do a good job of tutoring students without face-to-face contact. This calls for the interpretation of large quantities of data generated as a result of the activities performed by students, which e-learning platforms collect and store. These data are also potentially very useful for preventing student dropout. We propose the use of knowledge discovery techniques to analyse historical student course grade data in order to be able to predict in real time whether or not a student will drop out of a course in the future. logistic regression models are used for the purpose of classification. Experiments conducted with data on over 100 students for several real distance learning courses confirm the predictive power of our proposal that outperforms other existing approaches in terms of accuracy.

Requirement elicitation is critical to the success of a project, but it is not known which techniques can identify the maximum requirement of the customer. Therefore, many researchers have proposed various requirement elicitation techniques and studied the pros and cons of these techniques. According to the results of these studies, there is no requirement elicitation technique that is optimal regardless of its environments, such as attributes of the project, elicitors, and stakeholders. In this paper, we analyze the cognitive structure of IT professionals based on the factors that actually affect the use of the requirement elicitation techniques using laddering. We also use various statistical techniques to examine the relationship between the attributes of the actual project and the requirement elicitation techniques.

Technological innovation is the power and source of enterprise development. According to the fundamental principle of logistic regression model, the paper did a principle component analysis of the selected indicators system to get the value of the dependent variable in the logistic regression model. Then, empirical studies were conducted with relevant data, getting the logistic regression formula to divide the enterprises into non-innovative enterprises and innovation enterprises with significantly high accuracy rate, and the analysis of the factors affecting technological innovation capability was carried out. We conclude that logistic regression model is an effective method for enterprise technological innovation capability research.

Online lottery promotion during holidays has become an important approach for online communities to attract new users and activate current members. The objective of this study is to empirically examine the influence of an online lottery promotional campaign on user acquisition and user engagement from both short-term and long-term perspectives. The aquired data recorded individual users' daily activities on the mobile application before, during and after the lottery promotional campaign, as well as users' participation in the lottery draw and the awards received. This study found that the online promotion attracted more users to register, activated the registered users during the lottery promotion and the users who won non-virtual prize (monetary prize) will be more active in commenting after the promotion. While in the long run all the users' posting activities slightly decreased after the promotion, the lottery promotional campaign is effective in attracting and activating users in short term period.

Contagion risk for Australian banks from global systemically important banks: Evidence from extreme events

This paper presents evidence that extreme negative shocks for the global systemically important banks (GSIBs) are contagious to Australian banks. Our logit regression models predict transmission of adverse extreme shocks in the distance to default (DD) of GSIBs to the Australian banks. While most previous studies consider contagion across national stock markets, we investigate the degree of contagion risk for Australian banks spreading from GSIBs. Our results point to the critical importance for the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) (2015) to closely observe and monitor developments across the major GSIBs and direct appropriate local policy measures accordingly.

We usually assume that each commuter is an efficient traveller, which means they maximize trip utility. From a spatial optimization perspective, a commuter might therefore choose the nearest station to reach their destination. However, based on a survey at seven train stations in Perth, Western Australia, only between 30 and 80 percent of commuters choose the nearest station to their origin. Many factors could affect this travel behaviour. From a logistic regression model, five factors were found to be significant (p-value <0.05), indicating that commuters are more likely to choose the non-nearest station for longer commutes, while traveling further away from origins and destination if the chosen stations are at, or near, the end of train lines (captive stations). If the chosen stations are along the train line (non-captive stations), longer distance, longer wait times and lower costs from the chosen station to a destination were found to be significant. The results of the study are important for public transport policy makers to understand transit choice behaviours. Therefore public transport policies such as adjustments of travel fees and improving station service and facilities, could be developed. (C) 2015 World Conference on Transport Research Society. Real-time prediction of stream water temperature for Iowa

In the agricultural state of Iowa, water quality research is of great importance for monitoring and managing the health of aquatic systems. Among many water quality parameters, water temperature is a critical variable that governs the rates of chemical and biological processes which affect river health. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a real-time high resolution predictive stream temperature model for the entire state of Iowa. A statistical model based solely on the water-air temperature relationship was developed using logistic regression approach. With hourly High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) air temperature estimations, the implemented stream temperature model produces current state-wide estimations. The results are updated hourly in real-time and presented on a web-based visualization platform: the Iowa Water Quality Information System, Beta version (IWQIS Beta). Streams of 4th order and up are color-coded according to the estimated temperatures. Hourly forecasts for lead time of up to 18 hours are also available. A model was developed separately for spring (March to May), summer (June to August), and autumn (September to November) seasons. 2016 model estimation results generate less than 3 °C average RMSE for the three seasons, with a summer season RMSE of below 2 °C. The model is transferrable to basins of different catchment sizes within the state of Iowa and requires hourly air temperature as the only input variable. The product will assist Iowa water quality research and provide information to support public management decisions.

Analysis of Roadway and Environmental Factors Affecting Traffic Crash Severities

Death due to roadway crashes has been a leading cause of unnatural death in the United States for decades. The objective of this study is to identify and quantify the impacts of several key roadway and environmental factors to the traffic crash severities, and then recommend practices to emphasis on certain roadway types under certain environmental conditions to reduce the traffic fatalities and injuries. For this purpose, this study developed a logistic regression model to predict the odds and probability of a crash being a fatal/serious-injury crash under the combination of different roadway and environmental conditions. The study results showed that, road function class, crash location, road alignment, light condition, road surface condition, and speed limit has significant impacts on traffic crash severity. Higher crash severity are associated with rural roadways, major arterials, not at intersection locations, locations with curves, during nighttime when it is dark without street light, dry roadway conditions, and high speed limits.

An Analysis of the Detection Probability of MAC Address from a Moving Bluetooth Device

Traffic monitoring using Bluetooth MAC addresses has been intensively studied for a decade. Nevertheless, estimation of Origin-Destination volume is still challenging, because of the unstable nature of the detection. With the aim to reveal the factors affecting the detection probability of MAC addresses from moving Bluetooth device, this study conducted a series of driving tests to collect detection samples under various scenarios. The data was then utilised to develop a logistic regression model to estimate detection probability considering the installation positions of the scanner and the driving speed of the experiment car. The results agreed on the contribution of distance and angle between the scanner and the car, as well as the car speed, as reported in preceding studies. This study further identified the contribution of driving direction, and height and timeout duration of the scanner. The proposed model successfully estimated the detection probability with reasonable accuracy.

Factors Associated with HIV Testing Behaviors among Female Sex Workers in Rajshahi City, Bangladesh

ABSTRACTABSTRACTFemale sex workers are usually at high risk of transmission of HIV/AIDS. The aim of the study was to identify factors related to HIV testing behavior among FSWs in Rajshahi city, Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 200 FSWs. The present study revealed that sixty-eight percent of FSWs in Rajshahi city have been tested for HIV. It was noted that FSWs who were between 21-30 years of age, had secondary, or higher level of education, came from a richer family, had been tested for sexually transmitted infections (STI), and traded sex at residence, were more likely to have been tested for HIV. FSWs used condoms while having sex, and regularly asked new clients on their HIV testing status, that were more likely had been tested for HIV. This information would allow health authorities to target FSWs who may not be aware of their health, and controlling HIV/AIDS in this country.
