Headwater streams are the primary sources of water in a drainage network and serve as a critical hydrologic link between the surrounding landscape and larger, downstream surface waters. Many states, including North Carolina, regulate activity in and near headwater streams for the protection of water quality and aquatic resources. A fundamental tool for regulatory management is an accurate representation of streams on a map. Limited resources preclude field mapping every headwater stream and its origin across a large region. It is more practical to develop a model for headwater streams based on a sample of field data that can then be extrapolated to a larger area of interest. The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has developed a cost-effective method for modeling and mapping the location, length, and flow classification (intermittent and perennial) of headwater streams. We used a multiple logisticregression approach that combined field data and terrain derivatives for watersheds located in the Triassic Basins ecoregion. Field data were collected using a standard methodology for identifying headwater streams and origins. Terrain derivatives were generated from digital elevation models interpolated from bare-earth Light Detection and Range data. model accuracies greater than 80% were achieved in classifying stream presence and absence, stream length and perennial stream length, but were not as consistent in predicting intermittent stream length.

Females choosing taxi driving as a career is rare, therefore, investigating such samples is often difficult. Speeding is one of the most common driving violations, however, there has been no research looking into female taxi drivers' speeding issue. This study explores the factors of female taxi drivers' speeding offenses in Taiwan. Data is based on a national survey and includes 235 professional female taxi drivers. The results indicate that female taxi drivers work approximately 2737 days per month, at a mean of 9.76 h per day. Of the female taxi drivers represented in this study, 22.8% reported at least one speeding offense over a one-year period. The results of a logistic regression model reveal that the determinant factors associated with female taxi drivers' speeding offenses are significantly related to age, educational level and mileage driven. However, job experience, business operating style, and vehicle engine size are not associated with committing speeding offenses. Practical implications for traffic safety of female taxi drivers are also discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Resistance spot welds have a major effect on the stiffness and crashworthiness of a car body. Therefore, it is necessary to implement a monitoring method which predicts the weld quality of the resistance spot welding process, in order to ensure robust welds. In this study, the features and advantages of welding power signals were analyzed and a predictive model for weld quality was developed using a logistic regression model. The significance of variables, including;maximum value of welding power, electrode force, zinc coating, power drop, and so on, was examined and the multinomial logistic regression model was estimated using the significant variables. The accuracy of the predictive model for weld quality was estimated to be 96.4%. Also, the binary logisticmodel was estimated and a classification cutoff value was adjusted to control the prediction accuracy of the model.

Coherent forecasting for discrete-valued stationary time series is considered in this article. In the context of count time series, different methods of coherent forecasting such as median forecasting and mode forecasting are used to obtain -step ahead coherent forecasting. However, there are not many existing works in the context of categorical time series. Here, we consider the case of a finite number of categories with different possible models, such as the Pegram's operator-based ARMA(,) model, the mixture transition distribution model and the logistic regression model, and study their -step ahead coherent forecasting. Some theoretical results are derived along with some numerical examples. To facilitate comparison among the three models, we use some forecasting measures. The procedure is illustrated using one real-life categorical data, namely the infant sleep status data.

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with infection at the recipient site of pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) of head and neck cancer patients. We retrospectively reviewed head and neck cancer patients who underwent PMMF reconstruction and identified those with recipient site infection. Variables of patients with and without infection were compared and associated factors were investigated by logistic regression model. A total of 478 patients were included in the final analysis and 183 patients (38.3 %) developed recipient site infection. Lower margin of skin island, concurrent tracheotomy, diabetes mellitus, mandibular plate reconstruction, prior radiation, and peri-operative blood transfusion were independent factors associated with recipient site infection of PMMF. Skin island of PMMF beyond the eighth intercostal space markedly increased the risk of recipient site infection after major head and neck cancer surgery. Recognition of relevant factors associated with infection may help surgeons to identify those at risk.

Penalties with an l(1) norm provide solutions in which some coefficients are exactly zero and can be used for selecting variables in regression settings. When applied to the logistic regression model, they also can be used to select variables which affect classification. We focus on the form of l(1) penalties in logistic regression models for functional data, in particular, their use in classifying functions into three or more groups while simultaneously selecting variables or classification boundaries. We provide penalties that appropriately select the variables in functional multiclass logistic regression models. BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with carotid blowout in the cervical portion of patients with head and neck cancer in a large cohort. MethodsWe reviewed patients with head and neck cancer and identified those with carotid blowout. Variables of patients with and without carotid blowout were compared and associated factors were investigated by logistic regression model. ResultsA total of 2590 patients were included in the final analysis and 102 patients (3.9%) developed carotid blowout in the cervical region. Body mass index (BMI) <22.5 kg/M-2, primary site in the hypopharynx or oropharynx, open wound in the neck requiring wet dressing, radical neck dissection, and total radiation dose to the neck 70 Gy were independent factors associated with carotid blowout. ConclusionAfter completion of treatment in patients with head and neck cancer, carotid blowout was an uncommon complication with catastrophic results.
