Common representations of light fields use four-dimensional data structures, where a given pixel is closely related not only to its spatial neighbours within the same view, but also to its angular neighbours, co-located in adjacent views. Such structure presents increased redundancy between pixels, when compared with regular single-view images. Then, these redundancies are exploited to obtain compressed representations of the light field, using prediction algorithms specifically tailored to estimate pixel values based on both spatial and angular references. This paper proposes new encoding schemes which take advantage of the four-dimensional light field data structures to improve the coding performance of Minimum Rate Predictors. The proposed methods expand previous research on lossless coding beyond the current state-of-the-art. The experimental results, obtained using both traditional datasets and others more challenging, show bit-rate savings no smaller than 10%, when compared with existing methods for lossless light field compression.

Wireless data acquisition system (WDAS) is widely used in many application fields. Due to the conflict between bandwidth constraint and large amount of real-time data with high sampling frequency or multi-channel sampling, it is a challenging problem to transmit data to the back-end processing server timely and effectively. A novel and simple lossless source coding scheme, called PVA (Preprocessing and Valid word length Adaptive coding), is proposed for WDAS under limited communication bandwidth. The proposed coding scheme improves the utilization of communication bandwidth and realizes the real-time compression and transmission by the technique of common binary fields finding, repeating fields reducing and data stream recombination. PVA scheme also improves the precision of the measured signals compared to the normal oversampling method under the same bandwidth. It is thus effective for the applications which are in high demand of fidelity. The experiments on vibration and electroencephalography (EEG) signals show that the proposed PVA scheme is effective and valuable in WDAS. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a lossless coding method for HDR color images stored in a floating point format called Radiance RGBE. In this method, three mantissa and a common exponent parts, each of which is represented in 8-bit depth, are encoded using the block-adaptive prediction technique with some modifications considering the data structure.

This paper describes an efficient lossless coding method for HDR color images stored in a floating point format called radiance RGBE. In this method, three mantissa parts of RGB components as well as a common exponent part, each of which is represented in 8-bit depth, are encoded by the block-adaptive prediction technique. In order to improve the prediction accuracy, mantissa parts of RGB components used in the prediction are adjusted so that their exponent parts can be regarded as same. Moreover, not only the same color but also already encoded other color components are used in the prediction to exploit inter-color correlations. Simulation results indicate that introduction of the above exponent equalization as well as inter-color prediction can considerably improve the coding efficiency.

This paper proposes an efficient lossless coding scheme for still images. The scheme utilizes an adaptive prediction technique where a set of linear predictors are designed for a given image and an appropriate predictor is selected from the set block-by-block. The resulting prediction errors are encoded using context-adaptive variable-length codes (VLCs). Context modeling, or adaptive selection of VLCs, is carried out pel-by-pel and the VLC assigned to each context is designed on a probability distribution model of the prediction errors. In order to improve coding efficiency, a generalized Gaussian function is used as the model for each context. Moreover, not only the predictors but also parameters of the probability distribution models are iteratively optimized for each image so that a coding rate of the prediction errors can have a minimum. Experimental results show that the proposed coding scheme attains comparable coding performance to the state-of-the-art TMW scheme with much lower complexity in the decoding process.

This paper presents prefix codes which minimize various criteria constructed as a convex combination of maximum codeword length and average codeword length, or, a convex combination of the average of an exponential function of the codeword length and the average codeword length. This framework encompasses as a special case several criteria previously investigated in the literature, while relations to universal coding is discussed. The coding algorithm derived is parametric resulting in re-adjusting the initial source probabilities via a weighted probability vector according to a merging rule. An algorithm is presented to compute the weighting vector.

The question of backwards compatible image and video coding gained some attention in both MPEG and JPEG, let it be as extension for HEVC, let it be as the JPEG XT standardization initiative of the JPEG committee. This new standardization initiative offers a framework for coding technologies that allows backwards-compatible encoding of JPEG images: legacy decoders implementing the in-force JPEG standard (ISO/IEC 10918-1) are capable of decoding the codestreams conforming to the newer standard, albeit with lower bit-precision or lower quality. Part 8 of this standard, which is currently under standardization, offers an extension of the existing JPEG standard for lossless and near-lossless coding of images consisting of integer samples between 8 and 16 bits or 16-bit floating point samples. Unlike existing standards such as lossless predictive-Huffman coding specified in the legacy JPEG standard or JPEG-LS, the new coding modes are fully backwards compatible to the DCT-Huffman coding mode. This article describes the coding technologies available for lossless DCT coding, provides insight into the choices made for the standard and evaluates the coding performance of the coding options currently available in the working draft version of JPEG XT part 8.

In this paper we describe a lossless coding scheme for the encoding of MPEG-1 Layer III encoded audio bitstreams. Commonly known as MP3, the MPEG-1 Layer III standard has proved widely popular for the transmission of encoded audio files (MP3's) over the Internet. However, the MPEG-1 Layer III standard has been designed with a wide range of applications in mind. As such, the frame sizes are kept small and redundancies between samples in neighboring frames are not exploited. We propose a design which uses a combination of Linear Predictive coding and Arithmetic coding to exploit such redundancies. The proposed coder was tested on a number of Layer III encoded audio (MP3) files and shown to produce an average coding gain of 12.2% over the original Layer III encoded files.

This paper proposes a novel lossless coding scheme for color still images. The scheme employs a block-adaptive intercolor prediction technique to remove both spatial and spectral redundancy in RGB color signals. The resulting prediction errors are encoded using a context-adaptive arithmetic coding method. Several coding parameters which must be encoded as side information are iteratively optimized for each color signal. Experimental results show that the inter-color prediction technique provides better coding performance than a simple combination of reversible color transformation and intra-color prediction techniques.

This paper considers the problem, first introduced by Ahlswede and Korner in 1975, of lossless source coding with coded side information. Specifically, let X and Y be two random variables such that X is desired losslessly at the decoder while 17 serves as side information. The random variables are encoded independently, and both descriptions are used by the decoder to reconstruct X. Ahlswede and Korner describe the achievable rate region in terms of an auxiliary random variable. This paper gives a partial solution for an optimal auxiliary random variable, thereby describing part of the rate region explicitly in terms of the distribution of X and Y.
