We propose a 3D medical image coding method with optimal channel protection for wireless transmission. The proposed method employs the 3D integer wavelet transform and a modified EBCOT with 3D contexts to create a scalable layered bit-stream. Optimal channel protection is attained by assigning protection bits to the different sections of the compressed bit-stream according to their mean energy content. The robustness of the proposed method is evaluated over a Rayleigh-fading channel with a concatenation of a cyclic redundancy check code and a rate-compatible convolutional code. Comparisons are made with the cases of equal channel protection and unequal channel protection. Simulation results show a significant improvement in reconstruction quality of the received 3D images.

In the paper a highly efficient algorithm for lossless image coding is described. The algorithm is a predictor blending one, a sample estimate is computed as a weighted sum of estimates given by subpredictors, here 27 ones, hence the name Blend-27. The subpredictors varies from 15 based on 1-3 neighbouring pixels, to much more powerful even if working alone. The predictor blending formula is adaptive, and favors locally the best sub-predictors in a neighborhood. The algorithm is a cascade one: some sub-predictors are followed by two consecutive NLMS filters. Additionaly, in the fourth cascade stage sub-predictor bias cancellation can be done. Update formulas on NLMS coefficients and description of twelve bias canceling methods can be found in [1]. Entropy coder is a highly sophisticated arithmetic one, it is described in [1]. © 2023 IEEE.

Lossy compression is the main target of the upcoming video coding standard Versatile Video coding (VVC). However, lossless coding is supported in VVC by utilizing a certain encoder configuration. Particularly, the Transform Skip Mode (TSM) is always selected at the block level to bypass the transform stage (together with a QP that results in the same output as input at the quantization stage). Consequently, the Intra Subpartition (ISP) coding mode cannot be used for lossless coding, considering that its combination with TSM is not supported in VVC because it does not provide a significant coding benefit for the lossy common test conditions. For this reason, it is proposed to enable such a combination for the benefit of lossless coding. Besides, the encoder search has been optimized to improve the trade-off between compression benefit and encoder run-time. Experimental results show a 0.71% coding gain with a corresponding encoder run-time of 111%.

The explosion of digital photos has posed a challenge for storage and transmission bandwidth. The thesis briefly discusses my work on efficient image set compression. The loss-less compression of near-duplicate image collection is carried out using multiple steps, where each step is computationally demanding. My task is to make them work faster without compromising on compression efficiency. In this pursuit, we propose approaches for efficient clustering, fast direction oriented motion estimation algorithm, and an image reordering scheme with minimum predictive costs for better compression. The preliminary results for the proposed approach are promising. We also aim to extend our approach to hyperspectral and medical image set compression.

Human face images form the important database in banks, security kiosks, police departments and they are also found in abundance in day-to-day life. In these databases the important content, of course is the face region. In this paper, we present two highly efficient methods for compressing face images. The first method, which is lossy, detects the human faces in the wavelet domain for discriminative quantization to achieve high perceptual quality content-based image compression. This method gives superior subjective performance over JPEG standard without sacrificing the performance in the rate-distortion spectrum. The second method, which is lossy as well as lossless, also detects the human faces in the wavelet domain so that lossy/lossless mode can be selected dynamically for compression. This method gives the best solution to applications which can not tolerate losses for face regions. The method improves the overall coding efficiency by adapting lossy mode for non-face regions instead of coding entire image in lossless mode.

For exploiting the spatial redundancy in intra coded coding unit (CU), a block-based angular intra prediction is defined in high efficiency video coding (HEVC). In lossless coding condition without transform, quantization, and in-loop filter, pixelwise differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) achieves better coding improvement than block-based prediction since it is possible to make intra prediction pixels from adjacent neighboring pixels. In HEVC Range Extension (RExt) that was finalized recently, residual DPCM (RDPCM) to use pixelwise DPCM was included. In the paper, we propose an improved RDPCM by applying an additional prediction on the residuals obtained after RDPCM. Experimental results show that the saving bits of the proposed method is 7.29% on average compared to HEVC lossless intra coding. When the proposed method compare with RDPCM, the extra saving bits of 1.46% is achieved.

This paper reviews a set of color spaces that allow reversible mapping between red-green-blue and luma-chroma representations in integer arithmetic. The YCoCg transform and its reversible form YCoCg-R can improve coding gain by over 0.5 dB with respect to the popular YCrCb transform, while achieving much lower computational complexity. We also present extensions of the YCoCg transform for four-channel CMYK pixel data. Thanks to their reversibility under integer arithmetic, these transforms are useful for both lossy and lossless compression. Versions of these transforms are used in the HD Photo image coding technology (which is the basis for the upcoming JPEG XR standard) and in recent editions of the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video coding standard.

When Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) is used to represent a sound field, the channels might contain a lot of redundancy in some cases This redundancy can be exploited in order to provide more efficient network transmission and storage. In this work the amount of inter-channel redundancy for Higher Order Ambisonics is investigated. Furthermore, lossless compression techniques that build on this redundancy arc studied, With a focus on low-delay algorithms for real-time, or two-way, applications. The presented encoding scheme results in a delay of 256 samples, but with a rather high computational complexity both for encoding and decoding. The system also preserves the desired features of the HOA format, such as the scalability and the ability to reproduce over arbitrary loudspeaker layouts.

Efficient compression of disparity data is important for accurate view synthesis purposes in multi-view communication systems based on the "texture plus depth" format, including the stereo case. In this paper a novel technique for lossless compression of stereo disparity images is presented. The coding algorithm is based on bit-plane coding, disparity prediction via disparity warping and context-based arithmetic coding exploiting predicted disparity data. Experimental results show that the proposed compression scheme achieves average compression factors of about 48:1 for high resolution disparity maps for stereo pairs and outperforms different standard solutions for lossless still image compression. Moreover, it provides a progressive representation of disparity data as well as a parallelizable structure.

An efficient predictive coding of integers with real-domain predictions using distributed source coding techniques

By exploiting the commonly observed Laplacian probability distribution of audio, image, and video prediction residuals, many researchers proposed low complexity prefix codes to compress integer residual data. All these techniques treated predictions as integers despite being drawn from the real domain in lossless compression. Among these, Golomb coding is widely used for being optimal with non-negative integers that follow geometric distribution, a two-sided extension of which is the discrete analogue of Laplacian distribution. This paper for the first time presents a novel predictive codec which treats real-domain predictions without rounding to the nearest integers and thus avoids any coding loss due to rounding. The proposed codec innovatively uses the concept of distributed source coding by replacing the reminder part of Golomb code with the index of the coset containing the actual value.
