The recent JPEG2000 image coding standard includes a lossless coding mode based on reversible integer to integer filter banks, which are constructed by inserting rounding operations into the filter bank lifting factorisation. The baseline (Part 1) of the JPEG2000 standard supports a single reversible filter bank, the finite length input to which is symmetrically extended to avoid difficulties at the boundaries. While designing support for arbitrary filter banks for Part 2 of the standard, we discovered that reversibility is not always possible for even length integer to integer filter banks combined with symmetric pre-extension.

In this paper, a classification-based adaptive compression method for computer screen image is presented. This method firstly divides the computer Screen Image into 16x16 non-overlapping blocks, and then every block is classified into three types: text/graphic, pictorial and hybrid blocks based on the characteristics of histogram distribution and the number of colors. For complex text/graphic block, k - Means clustering method is used to reduce the number of colors to improve compression performance, finally the text/graphic block is coded by our proposed lossless coding method, hybrid block is coded by hybrid coding method and the pictorial block is coded by H.264-like intra coding method. Experiment results show that our proposed block classification method exactly distinguishes three block types, color clustering method can effectively reduce the number of colors for complex text/graphic. The compression performance and subjective image quality of our proposed method can outperform JPEG and JP2k.

This paper deals with the application of lossless compression algorithms to two-dimensional curves scanned images. An image is scanned along a space filling curve (SFC) so as to exploit inherent coherence in the image. The used SFC is determined by a gradient based method allowing the detection of global pixel's change direction for each image block. The resulting one-dimensional representation of the image has improved auto-correlation compared with universal scans such as the Peano-Hilbert space filling curve. Combined with conventional coding algorithms the proposed algorithm shows significant compression efficiency improvement. The new algorithm used for SFC determination is presented and used as an input to conventional coding schemes.

A lossy image compression technique, incorporating least squares cubic spline pyramids, vector quantization, predictive coding and arithmetic coding was developed for the compression and reconstruction of Magnetic Resonance Images. Typical results of 29.76 dB Peak Signal-to-Noise ratio (PSNR) for 0.45 bits per pixel (bpp) compression, and 27.91 dB PSNR for 0.33 bpp, compare very favorably with other, recently reported, medical image compression results. Furthermore, block artifacts are absent from the recovered pictures.

In recent years, it has been found that screen content images (SCI) can be effectively compressed based on appropriate probability modelling and suitable entropy coding methods such as arithmetic coding. The key objective is determining the best probability distribution for each pixel position. This strategy works particularly well for images with synthetic (textual) content. However, usually screen content images not only consist of synthetic but also pictorial (natural) regions. These images require diverse models of probability distributions to be optimally compressed. One way to achieve this goal is to separate synthetic and natural regions. This paper proposes a segmentation method that identifies natural regions enabling better adaptive treatment. It supplements a compression method known as Soft Context Formation (SCF) and operates as a pre-processing step. If at least one natural segment is found within the SCI, it is split into two subimages (natural and synthetic parts) and the process of modelling and coding is performed separately for both. For SCIs with natural regions, the proposed method achieves a bit-rate reduction of up to 11.6% and 1.52% with respect to HEVC and the previous version of the SCF. © 2023 IEEE.

Multimedia communication systems using super high definition (SHD) images are widely desired in various communities such as medical imagery, digital museum, digital libraries and so on[1]. There are, however, many requirements in SHD image communication systems, because of high pixel accuracy and high resolution of a SHD image. We considered mandatory functions that should be realized in SHD image application systems, as summarized to three items, i.e., reversibility, scalability and progressibility. This paper proposes a SHD image communication systems based on reversibility, scalability and progressibility. To realize reversibility and progressibility, a lossless wave;let transform coding method is introduced as a coding model, To realize scalability, a partially decodable entropy code is proposed. Especially, we focus on a partially decodable coding method for realizing the scalability function in this paper.

In the paper an efficient and time-effective lossless coding technique is presented. The method is context-based, three principal contexts are defined, for neighborhoods with special properties three auxiliary contexts are used. A simple predictor adaptation technique, being extension of ALCM algorithm, is implemented, hence, it is proposed to denote the new method as ALCM(+). A sophisticated formula for correcting the cumulated predictor error combining 8 bias estimators is calculated. Performance of the new algorithm has been tested on the set of 9 widely used benchmark images. It has been shown that indeed, the new technique has been time-effective while it has outperformed the well known methods having reasonable time complexity, like CALIC or JPEG-LS, and has been inferior only to those that are extremely computationally complex.

Uvádí popis metod použitých v referenčním kodeku FLAC a jejich obměny pro zvýšení komprese pro signály z mikrofonních polí. Dále uvádí popis metod pro zarovnání kanálů pro jejich následné zpracování. Na konci práce jsou zhodnoceny dosažené výsledky v porovnání s referenčním kodekem FLAC.

The lossless compression of images is widely used in medical imaging and remote sensing applications. Also, progressive transmission of images is often desirable because it can reduce the transmission bits of an image. Therefore, combining the features of lossless compression and progressive transmission of images has been intensely researched. The bit-plane method (BPM) is the simplest way to implement a lossless progressive image transmission system. In the present paper, a new block-based scheme for lossless progressive image transmission is proposed. This scheme will reduce the transmission load and improve the image quality of BPM. This method first performs a quantization operation upon the blocks of an image. Next, these blocks are encoded with fewer bits, and the bits are then transmitted phase by phase. The experimental results show that the image quality of this method is better than those in the BPM and improved BPM in related traditional works under the same transmission load. Moreover, during the first phase, the difference in peak signal-to-noise ratio between the present method and BPM is exactly equal LIP to 8.85 dB. This method is therefore effective for lossless progressive image transmission.

As three dimensional (3D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is widely used for high resolution volumetric data compression, and to further improve the performance of lossless coding, the adaptive directional lifting (ADL) structure based on non-separable 3D DWT with a (5,3) filter is proposed in this paper. The proposed 3D DWT has less lifting steps and better prediction performance compared to the existing separable 3D DWT with fixed filter coefficients. It also has compatibility with the conventional DWT defined by the JPEG2000 international standard. The proposed method shows comparable and better results with the non separable 3D DWT and separable 3D DWT and it is effective for lossless coding of high resolution volumetric data.
