This paper presents a full multiresolution lossless coding method, with advanced semantic scalability. In particular, a reversible form of the usual Walsh Hadamard Transform (RWHT) is first introduced as an alternative to standard lossless transform. A pyramidal representation and decomposition schemes involving this basic transform are then proposed. Significant improvements are obtained using two additional concepts: the “locally adaptive resolution” through a quadtree representation and a prediction step. The given experimental results show that the proposed RWHT+P achieves excellent performances compared to state-of-the-art.

Considering the properties of the residual signal, core-based bit-plane probabilities are provided for MPEG-4 Audio Scalable to lossless coding (SLS), which matches the quantization and coding performed in the core layer. Using the same strategy, new probabilities are obtained to consider the clipping effect in bit-plane coding of an unbounded signal, which is useful for non-core mode of SLS coding. Simulations show that considering the core layer parameters and the clipping effect improve the bit-plane probabilities estimation compared to the existing method.

The second generation wavelet transform can provide higher compression ratio than Huffman coding while it reconstructs image without loss compared with the first generation wavelet transform. Screen content sequences are ubiquitous type of video data in numerous multimedia applications like video conferencing, remote education, and cloud gaming. These sequences are characterized for depicting a mix of computer generated graphics, text, and camera-captured material. Such a mix poses several challenges, as the content usually depicts multiple strong discontinuities, which are hard to encode using current techniques. Differential pulse code modulation (DPCM)-based intraprediction has shown to improve coding efficiency for these sequences. In this paper we propose sample-based edge and angular prediction (SEAP), a collection of DPCM-based intraprediction modes to improve lossless coding of screen content. SEAP is aimed at accurately predicting regions depicting not only camera-captured material, but also those depicting strong edges. It incorporates modes that allow selecting the best predictor for each pixel individually based on the characteristics of the causal neighborhood of the target pixel. We incorporate SEAP into HEVC intra-prediction. Evaluation results on various screen content sequences show the advantages of SEAP over other DPCM-based approaches, with bit-rate reductions of up to 19.56% compared to standardized RDPCM. When used in conjunction with the coding tools of the screen content coding extensions, SEAP provides bit-rate reductions of up to 8.63% compared to RDPCM.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive predictive coding method based on image segmentation for lossless compression. MAR (Multiplicative Autoregressive) predictive coding is an efficient lossless compression scheme. Predictors of the MAR model can be adapted to changes in the local image statistics due to its local image processing. However, the performance of the MAR method is reduced when applied to images whose local statistics change within the block-by-block subdivided image. Furthermore, side-information such as prediction coefficients must be transmitted to the decoder with each block. In order to enhance the compression performance, we improve the MAR coding method by using image segmentation. The proposed MAR predictor can be adapted to the local statistics of the image efficiently at each pixel. Furthermore, less side-information need be transmitted compared with the conventional MAR method.

This paper proposes a versatile perceptual audio coding method that achieves high compression ratios and is capable of low encoding/decoding delay. It accommodates a variety of source signals (including both music and speech) with different sampling rates. It is based on separating irrelevance and redundancy reductions into independent functional units. This contrasts traditional audio coding where both are integrated within the same subband decomposition. The separation allows for the independent optimization of the irrelevance and redundancy reduction units. For both reductions, we rely on adaptive filtering and predictive coding as much as possible to minimize the delay. A psycho-acoustically controlled adaptive linear filter is used for the irrelevance reduction, and the redundancy reduction is carried out by a predictive lossless coding scheme, which is termed weighted cascaded least mean squared (WCLMS) method. Experiments are carried out on a database of moderate size which contains mono-signals of different sampling rates and varying nature (music, speech, or mixed). They show that the proposed WCLMS lossless coder outperforms other competing lossless coders in terms of compression ratios and delay, as applied to the pre-filtered signal. Moreover, a subjective listening test of the combined pre-filter/lossless coder and a state-of-the-art perceptual audio coder (PAC) shows that the new method achieves a comparable compression ratio and audio quality with a lower delay.

Other parts of the image (the background) are given lower quality levels allowing higher compression. The ROI coding is done in the framework of an embedded wavelet-based image compression algorithm. Significant progress has recently been made in lossless image compression using discrete wavelet transforms. The overall performance of these schemes may be further improved by properly designing efficient entropy coders. In this letter, a new technique is introduced for the implementation of context-based adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. This technique is based on the prediction of the value of the current transform coefficient, using a weighted least squares method, in order to achieve appropriate context selection for arithmetic coding. Experimental results illustrate and evaluate the performance of the proposed technique.

After the development of the next generation video coding standard, referred to as high efficiency video coding (HEVC), the joint collaborative team of the ITU-T video coding experts group and the ISO/IEC moving picture experts group has now also standardized a lossless extension of such a standard. HEVC was originally designed for lossy video compression, thus, not ideal for lossless video compression. In this paper, we propose an efficient residual data coding method for HEVC lossless video compression. Based on the fact that there are statistical differences of residual data between lossy and lossless coding, we improved the HEVC lossless coding using sample-based angular prediction (SAP), modified level binarization, and binarization table selection with the weighted sum of previously encoded level values. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides high compression ratio up to 11.32 and reduces decoding complexity.

This paper introduces a novel method for the construction of reduced pyramids with interpolation tilters adapted to the orientation of local image features. This construction establishes very efficient interpolative lossless compression, having also the added advantage of producing lossy replicas of the original, which, at lower resolutions lack undesirable artifacts near edges.
