This paper describes a lossless compression method for medical images that produces an embedded bit-stream, allowing progressive lossy-to-lossless decoding with L-infinity oriented rate-distortion. The experimental results show that the proposed technique produces better average lossless compression results than several other compression methods, including JPEG2000, JPEG-LS and JBIG, in a publicly available medical image database containing images from several modalities.

An efficient and robust approach to adaptive prediction is presented which uses a local causal area to evaluate a number of individual fixed sub-predictors. Various schemes are utilised to exploit the resulting information. including a rank-order based approach. a two stage adaptive selection technique utilising median filtering, a technique for adaptive combination and a technique incorporating adaptive selection followed by adaptive combination. The respective selection and combination schemes display superior results for particular image types. When the proposed predictors are coupled with prediction error feedback and adaptive arithmetic coding. they produce results superior to CALIC. To produce a more robust predictor an additional stage based on one of the proposed selection schemes is proposed. The result is an adaptive prediction scheme which effectively utilises the principles of predictor combination and selection. Different forms of the latter stage predictor are explored. which are shown to improve overall predictor performance. A selection based approach is also demonstrated to be more robust than combination based schemes.

In this paper, we have introduced a low-cost FPSoC for medical image coding and implemented to telemedicine applications based on the Xilinx Zynq. We have recently introduced a generalized block-lifting structure using the 2-D CORDIC algorithm as a block of 4-and 8-band linear phase paraunitary filter banks (LP PUFB) based on the quaternionic algebra (Q-PUFB) with one-regularity constraints on hypercomplex coefficients of the schemes for the lossy-tolossless image coding. Its structure can implement the integer-tointeger transform (I-Q-PUFB). The parallel-pipelined efficient architecture (P2E_Q-PUFB) has been proposed. The low latency separable image processing is implemented in the given architecture.

lossless video coding is required in the fields of archiving and editing digital cinema or digital broadcasting contents. This paper combines a discrete wavelet transform and adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction in the wavelet transform domain to create multiresolution lossless video coding. The multiresolution structure offered by the wavelet transform facilitates interchange among several video source formats such as Super High Definition (SHD) images, HDTV, SDTV, and mobile applications. Adaptive inter/intra-frame prediction is an extension of JPEG-LS, a state-of-the-art lossless still image compression standard. Based on the image statistics of the wavelet transform domains in successive frames, inter/intra frame adaptive prediction is applied to the appropriate wavelet transform domain. This adaptation offers superior compression performance. This is achieved with low computational cost and no increase in additional information. Experiments on digital cinema test sequences confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes an efficient lossless coding scheme for Light Field Camera (LFC) data. To exploit correlations among color components, our scheme utilizes four kinds of linear predictors which correspond to a 2 x 2 pattern of the Bayer color filter array. Moreover, their combinations are adaptively switched according to local properties of the LFC data. In order to improve coding efficiency, in this paper, disposition of reference samples as well as partitioning patterns for the above adaptive prediction are investigated by considering structures of a micro-lens array and the color filter used in the LFC. Experimental results demonstrate that the average coding rate of the proposed scheme is about 26 % and 30 % lower than those of JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS based schemes, respectively.

The considerations on effective lossless coding of non-smooth images are presented in this paper. Selection of the best not time consuming coding algorithms for a class of medical images is made a matter rather than completely new concept introduction. As a reference we consider the most efficient CALIC method, new lossless standard JPEG-LS (LOCO-I) and BTPC algorithm. Different methods of image scanning and one-dimensional encoding are tested. Simple raster-scan data ordering followed by n-order arithmetic coding gives significant encoding efficiency for ultrasound images considered as a representative of the non-smooth image class. The lower bit rates could be achieved by additional statistical modelling in arithmetic coder based on the 12(th) order context quantized to one-order context. Therefore number of states in conditional probability model is reduced to overcome dilution problem. Finally, improved compression efficiency of non-smooth images in comparison to state-of-art CALIC algorithm is achieved. Average bit rate value is diminished over 30%. To compress smooth images the linear prediction scheme is incorporated for entire data redundancy reduction. The same model based on linear combination of adjacent pixels is used in prediction and entropy encoding steps. For smooth images our method performance is comparable to JPEG-LS and slightly worse than CALIC (3.5%).

Many state-of-the-art lossless image compression standards feature adaptive error modelling. This, however, leads to data dependency loops of the compression scheme such that a parallel compression of neighboring pixels is not possible. In this paper, we analyse the parallelism provided in JPEG-LS by the large number of different and independent context sets. An out-of-order scheduling algorithm is introduced selecting independent pixels classified to be in different contexts. These independent pixels are processed in parallel. The compressed data is fully compatible with the ISO/IEC 14495-1 JPEG-LS standard. A prototype implementation on a modern GPU is provided to verify an overall speedup.

Many coding methods are more efficient with certain types of images than others. In particular, run-length coding is very useful for coding areas of little changes. Adaptive predictive coding achieves high coding efficiency for fast changing areas like edges. In this paper, we propose a switching coding scheme that will combine the advantages of both Run-length and Adaptive Linear Predictive coding (RALP) for lossless compression of images. For pixels in slowly varying areas, run-length coding is used;otherwise LS (least square)-adapted predictive coding is used. Instead of performing LS adaptation in a pixel-by-pixel manner, we adapt the predictor coefficients only when an edge is detected so that the computational complexity can be significantly reduced. For this, we propose an edge detector using only causal pixels. This way, the predictor can look ahead if the coding pixel is around an edge and initiate the LS adaptation in advance to prevent the occurrence of a large prediction error. With the proposed switching structure, very good prediction results can be obtained in both slowly varying areas and pixels around boundaries as we will see in the experiments.

A new adaptive approach for lossless and near-lossless scalable compression of medical images is presented. It combines the adaptivity of DPCM schemes with hierarchical oriented prediction (HOP) in order to provide resolution scalability with better compression performances. We obtain lossless results which are about 4% better than resolution scalable JPEG2000 and close to non scalable CALIC on a large scale database. The HOP algorithm is also well suited for near-lossless compression, providing interesting rate-distortion trade-off compared to JPEG-LS and equivalent or better PSNR than JPEG2000 for high bit-rate on noisy (native) medical images.

JPEG-LS is the latest pixel based lossless to near lossless still image coding standard introduced by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) (1). In this standard simple localized edge detection techniques are used in order to determine the predictive value of each pixel. These edge detection techniques only detect horizontal and vertical edges and the corresponding predictors have only been optimized for the accurate prediction of pixels in the locality of horizontal and/or vertical edges. As a result JPEG-LS produces large prediction errors in the locality of diagonal edges. In this paper we propose a low complexity, low cost technique that accurately detects diagonal edges and predicts the value of pixels to be encoded based on the gradients available within the standard predictive template of JPEG-LS. We provide experimental results to show that the proposed technique outperforms JPEG-LS in terms of predicted mean squared error, by a margin of up to 8.51%.
