Network-driven low complexity coding for wireless multi-view video system

For wireless multi-view video system, which has very limited capability for storage and computation at the encoder, it is essential to design a video coding scheme with low complexity. Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding scheme shifts large computational complexities to decoder with side information reconstruction, however, its encoding efficiency is not high enough. To obtain higher encoding efficiency and lower encoding complexity for wireless multi-view video applications, a network-driven low complexity video coding method is proposed in the paper. The proposed method is designed to implement color correction, motion vector extrapolation and disparity extraction at the central node of network, so as to reduce large computational complexities of motion estimation at the encoder and disparity estimation at the decoder. Experimental results show that encoding efficiency of the proposed method is higher than those of WZ coding and H. 264 intraframe coding methods. The encoding complexity of the proposed method is greatly decreased and the decoded views are of color consistency, which is favorable to high quality view rendering at the decoder.

Some video applications require the use of extremely simple source coding techniques. For these applications, Modulo-PCM is an interesting alternative to PCM since it has a very low complexity and performs better than PCM. In this paper, we present an adaptive Modulo-PCM algorithm for image coding. Our algorithm divides the image into blocks and performs a proper Modulo-PCM coding of each block. Since our algorithm allows different degrees of encoding complexity, it can adapt to the computational resources that are available in each video application. Experimental results show that our algorithm improves the coding efficiency of both non-adaptive MPCM and PCM. The magnitude of the improvements depends on the encoding complexity and the target rate.

Fast video transcoding from h.263 to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC

In the past 10 years detailed works on different video transcoders have been published. However, the new ITU-T Recommendation H.264-also adapted as ISO/IEC MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC)-provides many new encoding options for the prediction processes that lead to difficulties for low complexity transcoding. In this work we present very fast transcoding techniques to convert H.263 bitstreams into H.264/AVC bitstreams. We will give reasoning, why the proposed pixel domain approach is advantageous in this scenario instead of using a DCT domain transcoder. Our approach results in less than 9% higher data rate at equivalent PSNR quality compared to a full-search approach. But this rate loss allows the reduction of the search complexity by a factor of over 200 for inter frames and still a reduction of over 70% for intra frames. A comparison to a fast search algorithm is given. We also provide simulation results that our algorithm works for transcoding MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC in the aimed scenario.

Intra video coding is a common way to process video material for applications like professional video editing systems, digital cinema, video surveillance applications, multispectral satellite imaging, HQ video delivery, etc. Most practical intra coding systems employ JPEG encoders due to their simplicity, low coding delay and low memory requirements. JPEG2000 is the main candidate to replace JPEG in this kind of applications due to the excellent R/D performance and high coding flexibility. However, its complexity and computational resources required for proper operation could be a limitation for certain applications. In this work, we propose an intra video codec, M-LTW, which is able to reach very good R/D performance results, as well as JPEG2000 or H.264 INTRA, with faster processing and lower memory usage.

A Fast and Lossless Image Compression (FLIC) algorithm based on the median edge predictor and Golomb coder of JPEG-LS is presented. FLIC eliminates the gradient-based context model from the JPEG-LS standard, the most expensive parts with respect to computational complexity and memory space requirements. To avoid a large context memory, Golomb parameter is selected based on the coding states and the prediction residuals of up to two immediate neighbors, one in each dimension. The FLIC algorithm has low memory footprint and dissolves the data dependencies in JPEG-LS to facilitate parallelization. Experimental results show that the FLIC algorithm achieves a throughput speedup factor of 3.7 over JPEG-LS with less than 4% compression performance penalty. Lossless compression performance results further show that FLIC outperforms other state-of-the-art standards including JPEG 2000 and JPEG XR.

Physical-layer security based on wiretap codes can be used to complement cryptographic applications at higher layers of the protocol stack. We assume a passive eavesdropper that has access to noise-corrupted codewords with erasures that are statistically independent to those of the legitimate communication partners. Our goal is to minimize the information leaked to the eavesdropper. In this paper we present a low-complexity coding scheme for channels with feedback, which employs extensive interleaving of carefully punctured LDPC codewords. The key idea is to ensure that every transmitted packet is crucial for successful decoding. This is achieved by ensuring that stopping-set bit combinations for coded blocks are distributed among different packets and by enforcing that retransmission requests be restricted to the friendly parties. A probabilistic analysis reveals that an eavesdropper who uses a message-passing decoding algorithm will experience catastrophic decoding failure with high probability. This encoder thus provides physical-layer secrecy which is both independent from, and complementary of, the cryptographic layer. The proposed scheme works even when an eavesdropper has a better channel than the legitimate receiver.

The source-channel coding problem for point-to-point communications is reviewed. This is first done with a critical eye on the separation principle. It is pointed out that when we design a system according to the separation principle we end up with and end-to-end map which is essentially deterministic. It is indeed the fact that this map is deterministic what makes it inevitable that the separation principle leads to long codes and thus large delays. It is pointed out that in some applications we don't need or even don't want deterministic mappings. When this is the case one can go beyond the separation principle and aim at systems that have smaller (or eve zero) delay. This is obtained by matching the source and the channel in a probabilistic way. A speculative example suggested by biological communications is given.
