The relevance of low-code / no-code development has grown substantially in research and practice over the years to allow nontechnical users to create applications and, therefore, democratise software development. One problem in this domain still persists: many platforms remain low-code as the underlying modeling layer still requires professionals to write/design a model, often using Domain Specific Languages (DSLs). With the rise of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) and their capabilities, new possibilities emerge on how low code development platforms (LCDPs) can be improved. This paper shows how the capabilities of LLMs can be leveraged to turn DSL-based low-code platforms into true no-code. We analyzed how textual modeling can be replaced by generating the required model using LLMs. We conducted a user experiment to compare textual modeling with the use of LLMs for that task. Our results show that task completion time could be significantly improved, and the majority of users prefer using the LLM-aided modeling. Based on these findings, we discuss the integration of these techniques into an existing low-code platform to transform it into true no-code.

low-code development platforms accelerate software development by facilitating end-user programming. Through higher-level abstractions citizen developers are enabled to develop increasingly complex software systems. While this improves productivity and efficiency it also introduces new challenges in the development process. The evolution of the low-code development platform and the applications built on top of it is one of those challenges. Understanding the impact of changes on the software system is crucial for both the maintenance as well as the improvement of running software. Citizen developers can be supported by direct feedback that reflects how their changes impact the system. Professional developers can use the impact analysis to correctly migrate existing data. Finally, the operations engineers that are responsible for the availability of the platform and the applications can plan seamless upgrades of new versions. Impact analysis should be at the foundations of the development of low-code development platforms. This paper proposes the Impact Analysis for low-code development platforms framework, a conceptual framework that supports the discussion, research, and implementation of impact analysis. The proposed framework describes the different subsystems and artifacts in a low-code development platform, the different types of professionals involved, and how these professionals can use impact analysis to support their engineering decisions. Through a descriptive case study we discuss the role of impact analysis in an industry low-code development platform. Through the feedback acquired by impact analysis, professionals can stay in control of the evolution of both the applications as well as the low-code development platform itself.

Generating customized low-code development platforms for digital twins

A digital twin improves our use of a cyber-physical system and understanding of its emerging behavior. To this effect, a digital twin is to be developed and configured and potentially also operated by domain experts, who rarely have a professional software engineering background and for whom easy access and support, e.g., in form of low-code platforms are missing. In this paper, we report on an integrated method for the model driven engineering of low-code development platforms for digital twins that enables domain experts to create and operate digital twins for cyber-physical systems using the most appropriate modeling languages. The foundation of this method is (1) a code generation infrastructure for information systems combined with (2) an extensible base architecture for self-adaptive digital twins and (3) reusable language components for their configuration. Using this method, software engineers first configure the information system with the required modeling languages to generate the low-code development platform for digital twins before domain experts leverage the generated platform to create digital twins. This two-step method facilitates creating tailored low-code development platforms as well as creating and operating customized digital twins for a variety of applications.

low-code development platforms (LCDPs) permit developers that do not have strong programming experience to produce complex software systems. Visual environments permit to specify workflows consisting of sequential or parallel executions of services that are directly available in the considered LCDP or are provided by external entities. Specifying workflows involving different LCDPs and services can be a difficult task. In this paper, we propose the adoption of concepts and tools related to the composition of model transformations to support the specification of complex workflows in LCDPs. We elaborate on how LCDPs services can be considered as model transformations and thus, workflows of services can be considered as model transformation compositions. The architecture of the environment supporting the proposed solution is presented.

low-code/no-code software development is an emerging approach delivering the opportunity to build software with a minimal need for manual coding and enhancing the involvement of non-programmers in software development. low-code principles allow enterprises to save time and costs through a more rapid development pace and to improve software products quality by bringing closer together business and information technologies as well as promoting automation. Nevertheless, the low-code/no-code approach is a relatively new and continuously progressing domain that requires understanding of existing challenges and identification of improvement directions. In this paper, challenges in the low-code software development process and suggestions for their mitigation are identified and amalgamated with the purpose to deliver insights into the current state of the low-code/no-code development process and identify areas for further research and development.

The shortage of competent software developers has led to increased interest in low-code development platforms (LCDPs), which enable application development with no or minimal coding by leveraging pre-built components. This study explores whether LCDPs can fulfill their promise of empowering "citizen developers" (CDs) without extensive programming experience. Our paper involves a two-part empirical study. First, we conducted semi-structured interviews with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to understand their acceptance of LCDPs and identify potential barriers, such as the need for extensive training. Second, we performed a quantitative experiment to compare the performance of programmers and CDs using a prototype no-code builder. The results reveal no significant difference in task correctness or processing time between the two groups, suggesting that the training concerns for CDs may be overstated. These findings indicate that LCDPs could indeed democratize software development, allowing SMEs to develop necessary applications cost-effectively with minimal training requirements.

The current digital transformation in production systems has positioned model-driven engineering (MDE) as a promising development solution to leverage models as first-class entities and support complex systems' development through dedicated abstractions. Models are specified through domain-specific languages and consumed by dedicated model management services, which implement automation and analysis services. Achieving complex model-driven tasks that involve several model management services and multiple model repositories can be a difficult and error-prone task. For instance, modelers have to identify the proper atomic operations among available services, connect to remote model repositories, and figure out their composition to satisfy the final goal. Different composition proposals have been introduced in MDE even though a satisfactory solution is still missing. In this paper, we propose a low-code development environment to support citizen developers to plan, organize, specify and execute model-management workflows underpinning the development of complex systems. Thus, developers are relieved from managing low-level details, e.g., related to the discovery, orchestration, and integration of the needed model management services.

low-code development platforms (LCDPs) offer organizations the potential to reassign time-intensive software development tasks from professional to citizen developers, freeing up resources for professionals while empowering domain experts. However, while software can be rapidly built through citizen development (CDD), organizations must look beyond implementation and consider whether software built by individuals with limited technical backgrounds is scalable and durable. In this study, we investigate the scalability of CDD in organizations by conducting a multivocal literature review, integrating both the current phenomenon (CDD) as well as related, established research streams like end-user development. We identify four dimensions affecting CDD scalability and four temporal stages of CDD maturity, and present these as a CDD scaling framework. Moreover, we identify three overarching themes in scaling CDD.
