Recent research on land use and land cover change (LUCC) has put more emphasis on the importance of understanding the decision-making of human actors, especially in developing countries. The quest is now for a new generation of LUCC models with a decision-making component. This paper deals with the question of how to realistically represent decision-making in land use models. Two main agent decision architectures are compared. Heuristic agents take sequential decisions following a pre-defined decision tree, while optimizing agents take simultaneous decisions by solving a mathematical programming model. Optimizing behaviour is often discarded as being unrealistic. Yet the paper shows that optimizing agents do have important advantages for empirical land use modelling and that multi-agent systems (MAS) offer an ideal framework for using the strengths of both agent decision architectures. The use of optimization models is advanced with a novel three-stage decision model of investment, production, and consumption to represent uncertainty in models of land use decision-making.

A new market design is proposed which employs a joint day-ahead (DAM) trading platform for energy and security reserves. Its main purpose is to address the growing difficulties in the procurement of European ancillary services. This paper is the first part of the resulting research project's synthesis. The concept of co-optimization is described, followed by a proposal of a co-optimized power exchange (PX) complying with the European sequential energy and control reserve procurement. Co-optimization refers to that reserves are procured and priced jointly with the energy by a single market clearing algorithm. The novelty of our concept is that it enables concurrent reserve capacity procurement and the market coupling of PXs via implicit auction, without using centralized unit-commitment. The developed algorithm, its implementation and case studies are presented in the companion paper.

We propose a two-phase algorithm for solving the manufacturer's pallet loading problem (MPLP). A new integer linear programming model is developed to obtain the maximum number of items that could be packed onto a pallet in the first phase. The solution obtained in the first phase is then adopted to generate a layout pattern for the MPLP with a constraint programming model in the second phase. The computational results indicate that this algorithm can solve difficult instances to the optimality within reasonable computational times.

There are a number of great benefits to electric vehicles. For this reason, electric vehicle (EV) is a preferred option in the field of public transport and recharging the battery far from home is considered a serious problem, and it needs a long waiting time. Induction charging of electric vehicles is a new technology based on the wireless transfer technology, which transforms the electric energy without having any contact between two objects. This technology is very expensive for that it is necessary to look for an optimal installation in the network. For this, in this paper our objective is to propose an optimal strategic installation of the infrastructure in a network composed of several lines between two points (origin and destination), which allows each vehicle to go from the origin to the destination and to return to the origin. Our objective is to propose a balance between the number of the inverters and power segments installed in the network and the capacity of the battery installed in the vehicles while minimizing the cost of the infrastructure.

Lot streaming is the process of splitting a production lot into sublots and then scheduling the sublots;in overlapping fashion on the machines in order to improve the performance of the production system. Implementation of this concept arises in several batch production environments. These include, among others, printed circuit board assembly and semiconductor fabrication. There are several limitations in the lot-streaming models available in the literature which affect their usefulness in reality. In this paper, we consider the single batch, flow-shop, lot-streaming problem but relax several of these limitations. The main contribution of this paper is to provide the production manager With a way of splitting a lot in order to optimize performance under various measures of performance and setup time considerations. In addition, the insight of the proposed procedure can be used to tackle more general versions of the problem considered.

The technical characteristics of electricity generation and transmission have implications for the way in which economic principles are adapted to evaluate pricing and regulation issues in electricity markets. In particular, there is an externality associated with the way in which electricity flows in networks because of Kirchoff's laws. In this paper, a mathematical programming model is presented that simulates a competitive electricity market, based on the spatial-intertemporal equilibrium models pioneered by Takayama and Judge (1971). The model is used to simulate the operation of a hypothetical electricity market, illustrating some of the issues arising from the network externality. (C) 2001 Society for Policy Modeling. Constraint programming is rapidly becoming the technology of choice for modelling and solving complex combinatorial problems. However, users of this technology need significant expertise in order to model their problems appropriately. The lack of availability of such expertise is a significant bottleneck to the broader uptake of constraint technology in the real world. We present a new SAT-based version space algorithm for acquiring constraint satisfaction problems from examples of solutions and non-solutions of a target problem. An important advantage is the ease with which domain-specific knowledge can be exploited using the new algorithm. Finally, we empirically demonstrate the algorithm and the effect of exploiting domain-specific knowledge on improving the quality of the acquired constraint network.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to focus on the medium-term planning problem in supply chain networks. Based on a literature review, a comprehensive analytical planning model for the three echelon tactical planning problem in supply chain networks is developed which is applicable in a hierarchical planning frame. Design/methodology/approach - The approach used was mathematical mixed integer programming to model three echelon production-distribution networks embedded in the supply chain planning matrix frame. Application of the model in a multi-site planning process based on a case study from the industrial transformer supply chain was also undertaken. Findings - Integrated multi-period medium-term planning with customer oriented single sourcing is an efficient method to implement mathematical optimal solutions in practice as it provides comprehensive tactical plans and network designs. These can be used for scenario analysis in a coordination process with independent supply chain partners. Research limitations/implications - The implementation of a mathematical optimal plan in a complex business network structure requires a big-bucket model solution to grant the plan's stability via sufficient time buffers. Originality/value - The paper displays development of a multi-period three echelon tactical production-distribution-transportation model with different capacities, transportation modes, product types and single sourcing decisions.
