Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the cost efficiency of 58 branches of a major Greek commercial bank, in six major Greek cities, for the years 2000 and 2001. Design/methodology/approach - The efficiency is measured through the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. Using regression analysis, the effect of size on cost efficiency is also examined. Findings - The results indicate that there is a room for substantial efficiency improvements. The average inefficiency is about 30 per cent. It has also been observed that rural branches tend, on average, to be more efficient than urban branches. Research limitations/implications - A direction of future research would be to extend the analysis of determinants of bank branch efficiency in order to investigate the role that the region and the characteristics of the branch play in relation to efficiency. Originality/value - The paper provides a comparative evaluation of the efficiency of 58 branches of a major Greek commercial bank using the DEA method.

As a reliable and flexible electric power source, hydropower can quickly adjust its generation level and provide reserve power to balance the power fluctuations in the system. In this paper, we assume that the day-ahead spot market is cleared and the obligation for each reserve type is already contracted in a preceding market. Then the question is how to make the optimal decision to determine, for each unit and for each time step, the dispatched volume for the day-ahead market and the reserved capacity for various types of reserve. We formulate the constraints added to the optimization problem for distributing reserve obligations. The proposed mathematical formulation is based on an operational hydropower scheduling model used by most large hydropower producers in Scandinavia.

In this paper, we examine a telecom vendor selling Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) software applications and service-creation-tools to a telephone company (Telco) who then deploy these products on it's network to provide AIN services and queries. The supply of AIN software applications and tools by the vendor to the Telco who then uses them to create AIN services for residential/business end-users and AIN queries for enhanced service providers form the supply network of our study. Profit maximizing models for each firm are formulated and solved using, the mathematical programming software GAMS and the PATH module to obtain an equilibrium set of output and prices for the firms of the supply network. Manufacturing strategy reflects the goals of the business strategy and directs the manufacturing function in achieving them. In this study, we focus on two decision areas with crucial implications for manufacturing strategy: product planning and process design. Using mathematical programming models as a research tool, we test several conjectures in the manufacturing strategy literature regarding linkages between the two decisions. Our results show that a close integration between these decisions helps control the product offerings, stabilize process requirements, improve process technology choices, and increase net cash flows over time. Using the concept of environmental clusters, we found that a close linkage is more critical when the environment is more complex, less uncertain, and tighter. Based on these findings, we present some managerial implications and suggestions for future research.

Small-scale fish processing is the likely option available for Kentucky's aquaculture industry where market demand is limited, but the product prices are relatively high in restaurant and retail sectors and the seafood products are exotic and "in demand" by consumers. Paddlefish, a boneless freshwater fish with a meat texture similar to swordfish (Parr, 1999), is such an exotic product that enjoys a limited demand among local restaurant and retailers. This article investigated the optimal management parameters of a small-scale paddlefish processing plant using survey data from Kentucky. In addition, values of economic parameters such as profit, costs, and breakeven price, were also evaluated. Results of this article showed that 939 paddlefish could be processed per day into 1,891 kg of fillets, at a breakeven price of approximately $12.22/kg. Paddlefish steaks were found to be more profitable than fillets only if the steak price exceeded $10.34/ kg. At this price, 985 fish could be processed per day into 2,943 kg of steaks at a breakeven price of $8.27/kg. Current market demand for paddlefish in Kentucky indicates that fillet production will be the most profitable product form. However, given that paddlefish is cartilaginous and similar to shark, swordfish and sturgeon, and there is a demand for shark, swordfish, and sturgeon steaks, there is a potential for paddlefish steaks to be marketed profitably in the future.

A methodology to systematically construct an industrial ecosystem is presented in the context of a specific biomass input of peanut hulls and a process complex of activated carbon, adhesive precursor, and hydrogen. The methodology consists of three phases: locating sources and sinks of potential materials for exchange or upgrading;filtering feasible exchanges, the exchange candidates, and locations for new infrastructure;and generating optimal configurations for the industrial ecosystem based on the objective of maximizing the system benefit, defined in the particular case study as the revenue that is generated by the system. To implement the methodology two computer tools are combined: geographic information systems (GIS) and mathematical programming. A screening problem formulation is developed that uses feasibility contours to help reduce the number of candidate material and energy linkages. A case study describing a prospective agro-industrial complex in the state of Georgia, U.S.A., is given.

DHL, an international air-express courier, has been operating in Hong Kong for many years. In 1998, the new international airport located at a site considerably distant from the old location opened in Hong Kong (HK). Other airport-related infrastructure facilities have also been developed or are being developed, resulting in major changes in transport structure as well as a shift in customer demand. In this paper a multiyear distribution network is designed for DHL(HK) using an integrated network design methodology, which consists of a macro model and a micro model. The macro model, a mixed 0-1 LP, determines in an aggregate manner the least-cost distribution network. The micro model, a simulation, evaluates the operational viability and efficacy of the network according to its service coverage and service reliability. We also illustrate how coverage and reliability can be improved via the integrated use of the two models. Extensive discussion on relevant planning and operational issues of an air-express courier are included. The methodology has been successfully implemented at DHL(HK). It has been used to design the network, to test strategic decisions, and to update the network.
