This paper presents a data driven modeling (DDM) approach to certain types of optimization problems. DDM relinquishes control of the completed model to the user department rather than the operations research (OR) staff. The approach emphasizes development of models that are dependent on data maintained and understood by the users. The data base consists of coded user rules which describe when changes will occur in the problem structure and data which captures the generalization of the problem. Both the rules and data can be updated by user department personnel. These data drive a matrix generator controlled by the rules which uses the data base as input to generate the specific model formulation. This DDM system is designed by OR consultants or staff to allow independence of use along with low-cost and minimal-effort maintenance. The DDM approach is illustrated with an application to a real-world medical scheduling problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water consumption and emission can be decreased by optimal allocation of water re-use, regeneration and re-use. regeneration and recycle in water consuming mass exchange networks and by applying optimally distributed effluent treatment processes in case of several emission sources of different contamination levels. Several example problems taken from the literature have been reproduced and solved by GAMS/MINOS/CONOPT package. In most cases our optimal solution is identical to those of others;in some other cases, however, we found better solutions. We also found our method more flexible than those based on targeting and conceptual design. Some example problems involve constraints and/or specifications of those kinds the referred methods cannot deal with. Namely, the constant mass load specification is substituted by either mass load proportional to the;water flow rate (involving constant concentration shift) or some other, even more realistic, non-linear functions. The optimal systems have different structures according to the applied mass load relations.

Corporate philosophies of multiple financial institutions, including development banks, address regional economic development as their corporate driver. Regardless the latter, regional development financial institutions usual priority focuses primarily on individual application credit risk assessment, without a designed long term policy to impact strategic industries and its regional key economic objectives. With a transdisciplinary approach that involves a number of engineering (engineering economics, mathematical programming) and non engineering disciplines (finance, accounting, banking, policy making) that takes into account the full set of stakeholders (credit applicants, financial institutions, society at large, governments, among others), the contribution of this work impact the future of engineering practice by providing a framework (a method that includes a ready to use decision support tool) to design a transdisciplinary credit allocation policy that financial institutions could rely on to have a targeted aim significant impact in the strategic economic transformation of focused regions. A numerical illustration is provided to highlight the specifics of this transdisciplinary policy for the benefit of practitioners and society.

The use of centrifugal spreaders for application of granular fertilizers raises concern about application accuracy. These spreaders are capable of distributing fairly uniform deposits with regularly-spaced parallel tramlines but lead over and under fertilizer application when distances separating the successive tractor trajectories are not constant or if paths are not parallel between them. The aim of this study is to propose an optimisation-based method to compute optimal variables for uniform fertilizer application. Mechanical constraints are also introduced so that the calculated parameters can be afterwards used as reference variables for the control of the spreader. The resulting improvements are illustrated by numerical examples for a field with geometrical irregularities.

The food sector is a very complex environment influenced by economics, business, industrial, technological, transportation, information, legal and other factors. These factors shape the level of the availability of food, the nature of food products and the delivery method. The efficient and timely distribution of food products is critical for supporting the demands of contemporary consumer market. Without optimal food distribution, modern societies will not survive and will not develop. This paper presents the concepts of hybrid approach to optimization of food supply chain management (FSCM). This approach combines the strengths of constraint logic programming (CLP) and mathematical programming (MP), which leads to a significant reduction in the optimization time and modeling of any type of constraints. Moreover, this paper presents the formal model for optimization of FSCM with different objective functions. Several computational experiments were performed for compare hybrid approach to MP-based approach.

The effects of alternative agricultural land use scenarios in terms of environmental impact assessment on surface and ground water were simulated by means of combined socio-economic and environmental models. The economic model produced and evaluated alternative farming systems, defined in terms of land use (in farm crop allocations and regional statistics of crop distributions) and cultivation practices as influenced by different macro-economic scenarios of agricultural policies. These scenarios were defined on the basis of the present Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union and possible future measures for reducing the impact of current agricultural systems on the environment. The farmers' decisional process has been simulated with multi-objective functions aimed at maximising profits and minimising risk The methodology for the environmental impact assessment of farming systems is based an a simulation model for non-point source agricultural pollution which determines the impact of agriculture on a single field basis as influenced by environmental variables (soil and climate) and farmers' decisions (crop, soil management, fertilisation, etc.). The results obtained from this model were used to calculate a series of comparative indices capable of describing the effects of the use of fertilisers and pesticides on surface and ground waters. A geographical information system supported the spatial data management in particular for: a) the definition of simulation environments;b) the integration of physical and statistical geographical information;c) the cartographic presentation of results and the comparison of alternative scenarios. The model has been applied in the area of the Watershed of the Lagoon of Venice (WLV), located in northern Italy and has demonstrated how alternative policy scenarios determine not only significant variations in the overall environmental impacts in the study area, but also remarkable differences in their spatial distribution.
