When using product reliability data, it is desirable to apply the results to improving the product, rather than simply accumulating and reporting statistics. The engineering function with responsibility for cost and performance of the product must assign priorities to machine improvements, and still stay within the limitations of manpower, budgets, and equipment availability. A technique is developed for analyzing reliability data, and then applied the results of the analysis to a machine and reliability improvement program, utilizing zero-one programming methods. The data analysis produces a plan for product design improvements, consideration of resource limitations, time for implementation, reliability improvements, and rate of return from expenditures.

A method of unit commitment in an electric utility system is discussed. The need for production costing as a part of optimum unit commitment is emphasized. A lambda separable programming technique is presented which allows the use of separation variables, lambda , to represent the fixed charge component as well as the nonlinear component of the objective function. The method is tested using a hypothetical system of generating units including nuclear, fossil, hydro, thermal peaking and pumped storage. The daily unit commitment schedule for these generators is found using the optimization technique presented. Also, the suitability of this type of algorithm to study the inter-fuel substitutability is discussed.

Nowadays more patients need to receive medical treatments at home. Sequencing home care nurses visits shows similarities with the multiple vehicle routing problem with time windows (MVRPTW). Additional constraints make this problem much more complex. These refer to medical requirements and to the importance of continuity of care. In this paper, we present a mathematical model describing the problem of determining routes for home care nurses which takes into account constraints from the MVRPTW along with medical and continuity of care constraints. Discrete-event dynamic systems with feedback, where the behavior of the system depends on the system state, are difficult to model due to the uncertainties and dependencies of system performance on the system state. Service systems, in particular, tend to exhibit this behavior where servers may work faster (or slower) when facing an increasingly long line of impatient customers. A common example is a state-dependent queue where the service rate depends on the queue size, which can change during service. In this paper, we present a mathematical programming representation for the sample path dynamics of a state-dependent queue, and illustrate its application in sensitivity analysis.

This paper deals with the mathematical modelling of a scheduling problem in a heterogeneous CPU/FPGA architecture with communication delay in order to minimize the makespan, C-max. This study was motivated by the quality of the available solvers for Mixed Integer Program. The proposed model includes the communication delay constraints in a general form in a heterogeneous case depending at the same time on tasks and computing units. These constraints are linearized without adding any extra variables and the obtained linear model is reduced to make its solving with Cplex 12.5x faster. Computational results show that the proposed model is promising. For an average sized problem up to 50 tasks and 5 computing units the solving time under Cplex is about few seconds.
