State estimation is one of the most important processes to perform a reliable monitoring and control of the steady-state operating condition of modern electric power systems;thus, it is currently a fundamental part in the development of research to enhance the monitoring and security of the smart grids operation. This important topic is taught in advanced courses of operation and control of power systems, for graduate and undergraduate power engineering students. However, the most used software packages for simulation and analysis of power systems by researchers, students, and educators have put little attention on the state estimation module. Due to this fact, this paper proposes an approach to develop the computational implementation of a practical educational tool for state estimation of electric power systems using the matlab optimization toolbox. In this proposal, the formulation of the state estimation problem consists of developing a general digital code to implement an objective function based on the weighted least squares method. While the lsqnonlin function of the matlab optimization toolbox solves the formulated state estimation problem. Simplifying both research and educational processes, this tool helps graduate and undergraduate students to improve learning, understanding, and the times of implementation and development of research in state estimation. Simulations of an equivalent model of the Mexican interconnected power system consisting of 190 buses and 46 machines are used to test and validate the proposal performance.

In this paper, the optimization model of ultra high electromagnetic ball valve is established, and using the matlab optimization toolbox for optimization calculation. Then the optimum results of relevant structural parameters are compared with C++ prepared random direction method. It shows that the optimal design model of electromagnetic ball valve is correct. So we can draw a conclusion that using matlab optimization toolbox to optimum design is feasibility in the hydraulic component design through an engineering example of ultra high electromagnetic ball valve. The optimization results show that the optimization design based on matlab optimization toolbox has high precision, the program is simple, the calculation is fast, and the optimal solutions have a high accuracy and reliability.

A study combining wind power with pumped hydro energy storage for the Jordanian utility grid is presented. Three solvers of the matlab optimization toolbox are used to find the optimal solution for the cost of energy in a combined on-grid system. Genetic algorithm, simulated annealing (SA), and pattern search (PS) solvers are used to find the optimal solution. The GA solution of 0.0955388 $/kWh is economically feasible. This is 28.7% lower than the electricity purchased from the conventional utility grid. The discounted payback period to recover the total cost is 10.271 years. The suggested configuration is shown to be feasible by comparing it to real measurements for this case and a previous wind-only case. It is shown that the indicators of the optimal solution are improved. For instance, carbon dioxide emissions (E-CO2) and conventional grid energy purchases are reduced by 24.69% and 24.68%, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that the benefits of adding hydro storage, combined with increasing the number of wind turbine units, reduces the cost of energy of renewables (COERenewables). Therefore, combining hydro storage with wind power is economically, environmentally, and technically a more efficient alternative to the conventional power generation.

This paper presents two models of AC optimal power flow based Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs) allocation auction. Both models were compared with the conventional DC optimal power flow (DC-OPF) based model. Considering an FTR between two nodes as a real power injection at the source node and a power withdrawal at the sink node;the first model assumes that the net power due to FTRs equals zero. FTRs do not consider loss and the slack node is compensating for the total system losses. In the second model, it is suggested that each FTR's source node is taking care of a portion of the system loss by introducing a power injection. The portion of loss compensation is proportional to each FTR allocated amount, i.e., if one FTR is to use the grid more, then it should compensate more for the loss. To show the validity of all models and the advantages of the new suggested model, numerical examples of a 3-bus system and the IEEE 14-bus system are presented. All results are compared and explained.

Continuous power supply is crucial for any developing economy and its cost efficiency and reliability is highly dependent on operating reserve. Globally, the power systems are adopting a market based structure to enhance performance. In conventional electricity markets reserve gets a second place as its dispatch is performed after energy allocation but in the competitive market these two commodities are dispatched simultaneously to maximize efficiency and reliability. This study proposes a technique based on interior point algorithm for optimizing the dynamic combined energy and reserve dispatch problem with practical complex equality and inequality constraints such as power balance, generation and reserve capacity limits, ramp-up/down limits, and reserve-energy coupling constraints. To simulate practical outage conditions generator contingencies and their effect on operating cost and reserve dispatch is observed. The proposed algorithm is simulated on matlab platform and tested for three different cases of the IEEE 57 bus system with 17 generating units. It is found that the proposed method converges to optimal solution for all tested cases and produces feasible solutions where all complex constraints are completely satisfied.
