Case study on optimal design and operation of detached house energy system: Solar, battery, and ground source heat pump

Government policy impacts the level of sustainability for which houseowners design and operate their energy system. Consequently, there is a need to consider the sustainability level resulting from different policies, assuming optimal design and operation. The present work focuses on detached residential houses, where the energy system consists of photovoltaic systems for energy generation and batteries and optional ground-source heat pump systems for energy storage. A mixed-integer linear programming model is presented, which takes policies and other constraints into account when optimizing system size and operation. The results allow overall sustainability validation through parameters like self-sufficiency and self-sustainability, as well as a detailed drill-down of the optimal operation. From the analysis, two modes of ground-source heat pump usage are seen. With a feed-in tariff present, its main use is as an energy source, while without this tariff the optimal use is for seasonal energy storage. It is also found that ground-source heat pump systems contribute to increased sustainability, but they may not be economically beneficial for single-family homes having low or medium heating requirements. Demands for heating and cooling change with time and place, as do available area for photovoltaic energy generation and externally available energy sources. Therefore, a detailed analysis of the kind presented here is recommended before new energy policies are implemented. For each specific house or project, this kind of analysis will also be useful to evaluate the sensitivity of an energy system's performance towards changing policies.

This paper addresses the problem of management a residential storage system with distributed generation. With the introduction of a hybrid AC/DC inverter in this system, efficient energy management is realized to achieve the minimization of the cost of the energy balance among purchasing, renewable generation, curtailment and reserve capacity. This cost reduction is achieved by either meeting the load or selling surplus energy, and dispensing a residential demand load controller. To address the dynamic problem and with uncertainties regarding the load, renewable energy, and energy purchase and sale tariffs, a mixed integer linear programming model was developed with adjustable robust programming (ADJ-ROBUST-MILP), and it also involves technical restrictions and criteria for increasing the life cycle of the storage system. The dynamic aspect imparts practical applicability via the permanent correction of the ADJ-ROBUST-MILP solution with a heuristic that acts proactively in the developed dynamics by observing prior conditions. The case studies demonstrate that the mathematical heuristic is able to confer benefit to the energy scheduling of smart home energy management while presenting computational complexity capable of being used in real systems, which is exemplified herein.

In this work, we present the concept of an automated valet parking system that considers vehicles of different levels of automation by incorporating a parking management system. We discuss different types of distributions of the necessary functions for automated valet parking between an intelligent parking management system and parking vehicles. Afterwards, we shortly address the implications for the static map and environment representations before presenting used components of the parking management system (PMS). Our PMS assigns vehicles to an optimal parking space by solving a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. The MILP optimization especially aims at the optimal use of available charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Parking maneuvers are calculated using state of the art parking planners like RRT*-Connect. The exchange of information between the intelligent infrastructure and vehicles is achieved using V2X communication. Therefore existing V2X protocols are analysed for the context of automated valet parking and proposals for the required information to fulfill the intended functions are given. The feasibility of the PMS concept is shown with a prototype implementation that is demonstrated in simulation.

Commuter operations refer to the transportation of passengers on small capacity aircraft over short distances. These services have historically been plagued by high operating costs, yielding marginally profitable operations. The recent convergence of new technologies in autonomy and electric propulsion brings a step change in aircraft operating efficiency which may significantly improve the economics and environmental footprint of these vehicles. The next challenge is to optimize operations to match the demand and best utilize these assets. To do so, forecasting the demand for these new services is critical. First, we develop a demand model based on an empirically-calibrated generalized cost of travel combined with a multinomial logit model. Next, we investigate the design of sustainable and profitable regional air mobility operations by optimizing the network, schedule, and assignment of aircraft to flights. We develop a novel half-leg half-itinerary mixed-integer linear program to solve the integrated flight scheduling and fleet assignment problem using a multi-objective hierarchical optimization balancing the maximization of operating profits and the minimization of operating emissions. This helps identify promising regional air mobility markets, assess their economical viability, and select an optimum fleet composition to best serve these markets. The proposed framework is implemented in the United States Northeast Corridor using a fleet of three small-gauge electrified aircraft ranging in size from 9 passengers to 48 passengers. Several what-if scenarios are investigated with respect to the battery technology, the relative importance of profit and carbon emission objectives, and the network topology to identify their impact on the operations in terms of number of profitable routes, number of airports served, number of passengers carried, operating profits and operating emissions. The automotive sector operates under the just-in-time (JIT) approach, but variations in demand mean that first-tier suppliers generate an accumulation of stocks at second-tier suppliers. Second-tier suppliers have a limitation of storage space, reason to limit their production to the size of the warehouse, but always attending the first-tier demand plan. Afurther limitation of the second-tier supplier is the number of empty reusable containers that the first-tier supplier delivers to the second-tier supplier and that are used to package the injected plastic components. The reusable filled containers are returned to the first-tier supplier, according to the plastic components demand plan. Thus, a closed-loop logistic is carried out between first and second-tier suppliers. This study proposes, from the second-tier perspective, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for fleet sizing decisions of the cardboard containers in a production system. The model determines the number of cardboard containers that second-tier supplier has to use when the production is higher than the number of available reusable containers.

This paper addresses the scheduling of offshore oil well construction using drilling vessels. Drilling costs constitute a substantial part of the total development costs for an offshore field, thus planning the efficient use of drilling rigs is crucial to ensure economic feasibility of oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) projects. The objective of this study is to minimize the completion time of all operations involved in the development of subsea wells considering the availability of the drilling rigs. These activities are drilling and completion of the well, and maintenance activities. Technical constraints and availability of the drilling vessels and release dates and precedence constraints of the activities are considered. In addition, vessel eligibility restrictions are respected. A mixed integer linear programming model was developed considering the goals and constraints above. Numerical experiments using instances based on real-world situations show adequate behavior, which demonstrates that it faithfully represents the situation portrayed and can be used, combined with more advanced optimization techniques, to achieve better results.

Different research groups work together with different objectives in a single project. In Multicopter, Power Electronics has been assigned a task to maximize flight time whereas structural and inertial group requires light weight structure with minimum power consumption respectively. Selecting optimal readily available off the shelf components as per the mission requirement can be tricky job. It requires a trade-off between objective functions. There is significant amount of work done on multirotor using single objective optimization depending upon mission requirement but limited data is available for multiple objective optimization. One major drawback of integrating off-the-shelf components in optimization is that while optimizing one objective, the other objective may be blown out of proportions because of the same variable dependence. A multi-objective design optimization provides a pareto front which can really help the designer decide which variables to choose according to mission requirement. The pareto front actually demonstrates the trade-off between the objectives. The research aims to highlight the usability of genetic algorithm in multi-objective design optimization of multirotor with off-the-shelf components. Flight Time, power consumption and price are optimized simultaneously without payload. mixed integer linear programming incorporates indexed or boolean variable. However the adaption of indexed variable into Genetic Algorithm is not completely straight forward and is therefore discussed in the paper. The variables are indexed as per the selection of parameters. These parameters are actuator (combination of propeller and motor), high efficiency DC battery and Airframe. The resultant score diversity, fitness function and Pareto fronts indicated fairly convergent and promising results. However, larger set of components offering more trade-offs between various fitness functions would definitely challenge this setup.

The high-speed railway network has a huge structure and interruption problems occur from time to time. The automatic and intelligent train operation adjustment is of great significance to assist dispatchers in decision-making. In this paper, the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model was established in the case of the failure of one-way passing capacity in local network interval, and the model predictive control (MPC) algorithm was introduced into the study of railway interruption problem, so as to reduce the impact of interruption on train operation and effectively shorten the calculation time of this large-scale problem. Taking into account the uncertainty of the scene in the case of interruption, online optimization was realized through the feedback control algorithm. In addition, we studied the spread of the delay caused by a partial interruption of a line to adjacent lines. The intersection of Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail and Tianjin-Qin high-speed rail was employed as a case to verify its effectiveness.

Today, with more and more devices in the industrial control system (ICS), the risk becomes higher and brings more attack surfaces. The need for reliable anomaly detection systems is increasing. Traditional SCADA-based detection systems deployed are difficult to assess large-scale control systems accurately, and novel AI-based technologies struggle to ensure timely response. In this paper, we propose an edge computing assisted delay-aware anomaly detection (ECADA) scheme for ICS, which considers both the accuracy and timeliness, and ensures that abnormal conditions can be accurately detected and handled in a short time. First, we model the components in ICS as three layers, taking network resources, delay, and reliability into consideration. Second, we convert the anomaly detection procedure into a decision making problem. By dividing the warning capabilities into various levels, the flexibility of the anomaly detection system is enhanced. Third, we cast a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem to find the efficient anomaly detection mechanism, so that it can be dynamically scheduled to achieve the tradeoff between reliability and timeliness. We use an real-world industrial system dataset for experimental evaluation. By comparing with various traditional anomaly detection methods, it is proved that ECADA can always ensure reliable response of anomaly detection system in various network environments.

Optimal scheduling of cascade hydropower plants in a portfolio electricity market considering the dynamic water delay

With the reform of China's electricity market, the cascade hydropower plants' participation in the portfolio electricity market is an effective way to improve power generation profits and avoid risks. Hence, an optimized scheduling model for cascade hydropower plants simultaneously participating in both the daily contract market and the day-ahead spot market is developed. The dynamic water delay between the cascade hydropower plants, the uncertainty of the day-ahead market clearing price and the operating constraints of individual units are considered to make the model more realistic. To improve the solution efficiency, several linearization approaches are proposed to convert the original model into a scenario-based MILP problem, which can be solved by the efficient solver. The real-world case studies demonstrate that the developed model ensures appreciable power generation benefits while keeping the cascade hydropower plants in safe and stable operation. Moreover, compared with other water delay time formulations which we consider to be the most advanced in previous literature, the scheduling plan obtained from the proposed model is more realistic and computationally efficient. The impact of the penalty coefficient for the contract electricity imbalance is also analyzed, which can provide effective references for the market operators when formulating electricity trading rules.
