Efficient solution of many-objective Home Energy Management systems

Home Energy Management systems have become an essential tool on pursuing an efficient energy consumption besides the implantation of demand response programs in residential consumers. This kind of systems have evolved from a single-objective paradigm, in which only the electricity bill was concerned, to many-objective frameworks that involve different targets such as grid supporting programs or user convenience premises. From the computational point of view, many-objective optimization problems are more challenging than single-, and multiple-objective ones due to higher computational burden and the necessity of advanced tools capable to reach a compromise solution among objectives. This paper tackles this issue by developing an efficient but effective stochastic many-objective solution framework based on mixed integer linear programming formulation. The new proposal is based on lexicographic optimization and scalarizing functions, thus allowing to distinguish one of the targets as the most important one. This feature makes the new approach very suitable for Home Energy Management systems in which the energy cost is normally the most important objective while other goals can be considered secondary. The developed tool is validated on a standard home layout benchmark considering up to six typical objectives. The results obtained put on manifest the effectiveness and efficiency of the developed approach.

The Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) is among the major points of contention in multi-core systems. We consider a challenging optimization problem arising in worst-case performance analysis of systems architectures: computing the worst-case delay (WCD) experienced when accessing the DRAM due to the interference of contending requests. The WCD is a crucial input for micro-architectural design of systems with reliable end-to-end performance guarantees, which is required in many applications, such as when strict real-time requirements must be imposed. The problem can be modeled as a mixed integer linear program (MILP), for which standard MILP software struggles to solve even small instances. Using a combination of upper and lower scenario bounding, we show how to solve realistic instances in a matter of few minutes. A novel ingredient of our approach, with respect to other WCD analysis techniques, is the possibility of computing the exact WCD rather than an upper bound, as well as providing the corresponding scenario, which represents crucial information for future memory design improvements.

With the increasing railway transportation demands, railway operators need to enhance the capacity in high traffic corridors to improve transportation efficiency. The establishment of the concept "virtual coupling (VC)" provides an effective method for achieving higher capacity. The core idea is to reduce the train separation and to enable a maximized number of trains on the track. Based on the emerging modern communication techniques, the synchronous operation between different trains to form the coupled state can be achieved without any physical connection. In this paper, a following-train speed profile optimization model is proposed by employing mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach to achieving VC with the leading train. Therefore, the safety constraints (i.e. moving block signaling (MBS)) are considered as the most important physical border between each train under the VC operation. Three cases under different scenarios are conducted on a generic high-speed rail, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed method on the speed profile optimization for following trains under the VC operation. It also shows the factors influencing the time headway under minimized-separation operations.

The demand in the logistics market is vast, but its revenue is relatively small. This fact forces the need for optimized operation in logistics delivery. Several algorithms have been proposed to solve simple delivery problems. An algorithm that can solve a delivery problem in a hybrid-transit network and consider the collaboration between heterogeneous agents is needed to optimize the operation further. This paper proposed an algorithm called Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickup, Relay, and Delivery (VRP-PRD) to solve the delivery problem in the hybrid-transit network by considering the physical constraints of the heterogeneous delivery vehicles with several objective functions. The simulation results also show that VRP-PRD can solve the problem with a reasonable computing time.

The utilisation of resources from a fairness perspective has been an extensively researched topic, either to enhance the quality of services or to allow spectrum sharing, among others. One method to define forwarding routes is through flow algorithms, which aim to find optimal paths between nodes where capacity constraints are of interest. SALEM is an approach to enable fairness in services competing for resources in wireless mesh environments. SALEM implements a multicommodity flow heuristic, based on a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation, to consider fairness in reliability, delay and energy objectives and is constrained by bandwidth and link usage criteria. SALEM is implemented in the ONOS controller to enable a fair utilisation of links in a topology replicating a real-world scenario. Within a time complexity that is directly related to the topology, the number of users and available services, the results of SALEM demonstrate its feasibility to run in production-ready networks with minimal overhead.

The ever-increasing development in the world causes load demand to increase exponentially each year. The current transmission and distribution systems cannot meet this load demand. Moreover, the peak demand occurs only for a short duration. However, it stresses the power system and results in system losses and damages, which can be avoided by load shedding at the cost of customer discomfort and economic losses to utilities. Energy Storage System (ESS) is a feasible option to counter this problem. In this paper, an optimal mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based computational energy arbitrage model of ESS is proposed for efficiently scheduling its charging and discharging power to avoid overloading of distribution feeder. The proposed optimization model ensures satisfaction of feeder thermal limit constraints. The case study of distribution feeder with ESS deployment is presented for proving the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results clearly demonstrate the ESS economical operation to reduce feeder peak load and maximize ESS profit.

Optimizing the workload of production units of a make-to-order manufacturing system

This paper proposes a production planning approach for a job shop type manufacturing company in electronics sector that operates with make-to-order (MTO) convention and has a high-mix production range. A novel mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed that finds workload-dependent planning horizon by making order acceptance decisions. Partial acceptance of orders and delayed internal target deliveries contribute to the novelty of the proposed model. We establish the complexity of the problem and solve real-life problem instances of a medium-size manufacturing company in the south of The Netherlands. Our computational results show that the proposed MILP model can allocate desired workload to work centers by dynamically adjusting the time horizon for production plans. Our approach can practically be used within reasonable times for daily updates of internal production targets. We perform a sensitivity analysis to show how the time horizon is determined with varying system conditions. The obtained workload amounts satisfy minimum requirements of production units, as this cannot be achieved by the current practice.

MILP-Based Profit Maximization of Electric Vehicle Charging Station Based on Solar and EV Arrival Forecasts

Electric vehicles (EVs) will be dominating the modes of transport in the future. Current limitations discouraging the use of EVs are mainly due to the characteristics of the EV battery and lack of easy access to charging stations. Charging schedules of EVs are usually uncoordinated, whereas coordinated charging offers several advantages, including grid stability. For a solar photovoltaic (PV)-based charging station (CS), optimal utilization of solar power results in an increased revenue and efficient utilization of related equipment. The solar PV and the arrival of EVs for charging are both highly stochastic. This work considers the solar PV forecast and the probability of EV arrival to optimize the operation of an off-grid, solar PV-based commercial CS with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to realize maximum profit. BESS supports the sale of power when the solar PV generation is low and subsequently captures energy from the solar PV when the generation is high. Due to contrasting characteristics of the solar PV and EV charging pattern, strategies to maximize the profit are proposed. One such strategy is to optimally size the BESS to gain maximum profit. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) method is used to determine the optimal solution.

Synchromodal transport planning with flexible services: Mathematical model and heuristic algorithm

As a critical feature of synchromodal transport (ST), service flexibility plays an important role in improving the utilization of resources to reduce costs, emissions, congestions, and delays. However, none of the existing studies considered flexible services under the framework of synchromodality. This paper develops a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to formulate service flexibility in ST planning. In the MILP model, vehicles with flexible services as well as fixed services are both considered, and vehicle routes and request routes are planned simultaneously. Due to the computational complexity, an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search heuristic is designed to solve the problem. Several customized operators are designed based on the characteristics of the studied problem. The proposed model is compared with the models developed in a highly-cited paper and a newly published paper that do not consider service flexibility. Case studies on small instances verified that the proposed model with flexibility performs better on all scenarios, including scenarios with different weights for the individual objectives, scenarios under congestion,and dynamic optimization scenarios. On large instances (up to 1600 shipment requests), the proposed model with flexibility reduces the cost by 14% on average compared with the existing models in the literature.

Integrating renewable energy resources with dedicated energy storage systems in building regimes is becoming viable with numerous well-documented advantages. Multiple buildings, i.e., primary building(s) (with solar & storage) and secondary building(s) (ordinary building dependent entirely on the grid), have bilateral contracts with each other, resulting in an optimized exchange bilaterally and with the grid to reduce grid costs. Further, the allowance of electric vehicles (EVs) in these buildings enable added options to optimize the power flows, focusing on cost reduction. In this work, a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is formulated to maximize the primary building's profits, along with the financial gains to secondary buildings and a fleet of EVs. The charging infrastructure at the primary building also facilitates the EVs' load by accounting for factors such as feeder time-of-use (TOU) tariffs, contracted rates between the buildings, and EV charging prices. Results for actual load profiles for buildings in Auckland, New Zealand show that primary buildings earn up to 87 % of daily profits along with the 10-41 % daily cost savings for secondary buildings. The insights presented in this work can benefit local aggregators with options to maximize local profits lowering the grid dependence.
