This paper delves into the optimization and economic benefits of wind-solar energy storage systems in park microgrids. By constructing and refining multiple mathematical models, the study provides scientific decision support for system configuration, aiming to meet the increasing demand for load and enhance overall economic benefits. Firstly, the paper proposes the Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Coordination Optimization Model (PCSO-Model), which combines mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with Monte Carlo simulation, effectively reducing the total supply cost of the park. Subsequently, considering the aging effect of energy storage systems, load forecasting errors at different time scales, and the impact of electricity price fluctuations on economic viability, the PCSO model is improved and solved using an improved genetic algorithm. Simulation and optimization results demonstrate that the introduction of energy storage systems reduces costs by approximately 10 % on average, decreases the curtailment of wind and solar power by about 15%, and increases the utilization rate of wind and solar power generation by 20%.

Describes a method for finding optimal trajectories for multiple aircraft avoiding collisions. Developments in spacecraft path-planning have shown that trajectory optimization including collision avoidance can be written as a linear program subject to mixed integer constraints, known as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). This can be solved using commercial software written for the operations research community. In the paper, an approximate model of aircraft dynamics using only linear constraints is developed, enabling the MILP approach to be applied to aircraft collision avoidance. The formulation can also be extended to include multiple waypoint path-planning, in which each vehicle is required to visit a set of points in an order chosen within the optimization.

We present a technique for obtaining the longest counterexample - the execution that stays in the unsafe set for the longest (not necessarily contiguous) time, for a safety specification of linear hybrid systems. Given that hybrid systems are infinite state systems, the number of counterexamples for safety violations are potentially infinite. Therefore, searching for the right counterexample is very challenging. We employ two frameworks for solving this problem: first is an mixed integer linear Program (MILP) formulation and second is to encode counterexamples using Satisfiability Module Theory (SMT) solvers. We evaluate these frameworks on several linear hybrid systems with up to 30 dimensions.

The intelligence algorithm used in the backbone grid search is unrobust and has uncertain results. To tackle the drawback, this paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for generating the power system backbone grid. Based on the graph theory, this model considers the connectivity of the backbone grid as linear constraints with integer variables. Constrains of line power in the model are elicited by the derivation from Kirchhoff's current law. Since the expressions in this model are analytical and linear, with the help of developed MILP algorithm, the proposed model can fully solve the problem of absence of robustness in existing method. The simulations of IEEE 39-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system show that the proposed model is effective and reliable, which provides a new idea for the development in this research.

Summary form only given. Important research effort has been devoted to the topic of optimal planning of distribution systems. However, in general it has been mostly referred to the design of the primary network, with very modest considerations to the effect of the secondary network in the planning and future operation of the complete grid. Relatively little attention has been paid to the optimization of the secondary grid and to its effect on the optimality of the design of the complete electrical system, although the investment and operation costs of the secondary grid represent an important portion of the total costs. Appropriate design procedures have been proposed separately for both the primary and the secondary grid, however in general both planning problems have been presented and treated as different, almost isolated problems, setting aside with this approximation some important factors that couple both problems, such as the fact that they may share the right of way, use the same poles, etc., among other factors that strongly affect the calculation of the investment costs. The main purpose of this work is the development and initial testing of a model for the optimal planning of a distribution system that includes both the primary and the secondary grids, so that a single optimization problem is stated for the design of the integral primary-secondary distribution system that overcomes these simplifications. The mathematical model incorporates the variables that define both the primary as well as the secondary planning problems and consists of a mixed integer-linear programming problem that may be solved by means of any suitable algorithm. Results are presented of the application of the proposed integral design procedure using conventional mixed integer-linear programming techniques to a real case of a residential primary-secondary distribution system consisting of 75 electrical nodes.

Optimal sizing of microgrids is achieving higher importance in the current era of energy transition driven by renewable sources. Due to the intermittence of the renewable sources i.e. PV, wind assisted by energy storages i.e. battery the optimal sizing of the microgrids alonf with cost minimization is a great challenge. This study presents a methodological framework for determining the optimal configuration of a hybrid microgrid, integrating various energy resources such as photovoltaic (PV) generation, battery storage, a genset, and grid interconnection. Employing Pyomo optimization tool with a mixed-integer linear programming algorithm, the research focuses on sizing components within a 20 kW PV microgrid. Through meticulous examination of load demand and installed PV capacity, the algorithm strategically optimizes the sizing of PV panels, batteries, gensets, and grid interactions to minimize both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX). The microgrid's performance is analyzed under three pricing schemes: net metering, selling excess energy to the grid (selling price less than buying price), and giving it away (zero price). Additionally, in off-grid mode, the total CO2 emissions are minimized. The proposed methodology offers a systematic approach for designing economically viable and efficient hybrid microgrids, essential for sustainable energy systems.

An appropriate design of work-rest schedule is recognized as an efficient way in providing betterergonomicenvironment, improving labor productivity as well as safety. Construction workers usually undertake physically demanding tasks in an outdoor environment, with awkward postures and repetitive motions. This study proposes a mixed-integer linear programming approach to optimize the work-rest schedule for construction workers in hot weather for the objective of maximizing the total productive time. The model takes into consideration the physical and physiological conditions of the workers, the working environment, the nature of the jobs and the minimum rest duration of the government regulation. The results of numerical experiments show that the proposed model outperforms a default work-rest schedule by up to 10% in terms of total productive time. This implies considerable cost savings for the construction industry.

In a recent article (Goncalves et al., AIChE J. 2017. DOI: 10.1002/aic.15556), we presented a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for the detailed design of shell and tube heat exchangers based on the Kern approach (Kern, D. Q Process Heat Transfer;McGraw Hill, 1950). The formulation relies on the use of standardized values for several mechanical parts, which we express in terms of discrete choices. Because we aim at having this model used as part of more complex models (i.e., heat exchanger networks synthesis), we identified a need to improve its computational efficiency. In this article, we explore several different modeling options to speed up solutions. These options are based on different alternatives of aggregation of the discrete values in relation to the set of binary variables. Numerical results show that these procedures allow large computational effort reductions.

the problem studied in this paper is to allocate and to sequence the elective operation on operating rooms (ORs). We develop a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to solve this problem. Decisions in this model include the allocation of operations to material resources and human resources, the starting time of them and the starting time for each surgeon. To show the efficiency of this model, we decide to compare it with a constraints programming (CP) approach. The performance of these models is tested using a benchmark of the literature. The results indicate the efficiency of the MILP model compared with the CP model in terms of computational time.

The problem is nonlinear and contains continuous and logical variables. Two solutions are compared in this paper: Dynamic programming and mixed integer linear programming.
