Segmentation of scanning-transmission electron microscopy images using the ordered median problem

This paper presents new models for segmentation of 2D and 3D Scanning-Transmission Electron Microscope images based on the ordered median function. The main advantage of using this function is its good adaptability to the different types of images to be studied due to the wide range of weight vectors that can be cast. Classical segmentation models stand out for their ability to provide a segmentation of the original image very quickly and with low computational burden. However, they do not usually achieve high quality segmentations with a small number of clusters in order to classify the different elements which compose the structure represented in the image. The quality of the segmentation provided by our approach is analysed using different choices of the weight vector in some real instances. Moreover, improvements are proposed for the formulations to reduce the computational time needed to solve these problems by taking advantage of the weight vector structure. (C) 2022 The Author(s). Optimization of Multi-microgrid System Operation Cost with Different Energy Management Tools in the Presence of Energy Storage System

Given the increasing capacity of distributed generation and renewable resources, how to use this capacity and proper energy management will be a major challenge for low-capacity networks such as microgrids. With the help of peripherals tools, an arrangement can be made to achieve a more desirable result in the energy management system (EMS). Storage resources and at a higher level, the storage module is used as one of these tools in the subsystems of the EMS. In this article, in addition to taking advantage of the connection of several microgrids to each other and reducing interactions with the main network, by using the storage module and other related tools, the cost of providing energy to a cluster of microgrids is reduced to the lowest possible value. By implementing a mathematical model based on mixed-integer linear programming, the best program for generation resources obtains in such a way that the cost of energy supply reduces to the minimum value. The study results have been analyzed in two case studies;a modified laboratory microgrid and the IEEE 33-bus distribution network. Although different solvers in Gams will provide almost similar answers, the optimal answer was found by the Cplex solver.

Economic optimization for a dual-feedstock lignocellulosic-based sustainable biofuel supply chain considering greenhouse gas emission and soil carbon stock

Environmental factors, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and soil organic carbon (SOC), should be considered when building a sustainable biofuel supply chain. This work developed a three-step optimization approach integrating a geographical information system-based mixed-integer linear programming model to economically optimize the biofuel supply chain on the premise of meeting certain GHG emission criteria. The biomass supply grid cell was considered first, based on a maximum level of GHG emissions, prior to economic optimization. The optimization simultaneously considered dual-feedstock sourcing, selection between distributed and centralized configurations, and the impact of maintaining SOC balance in agricultural soil on biomass availability. The applicability of the modeling approach was demonstrated through a case study that optimized a dual-feedstock renewable jet fuel supply chain via a gasification-Fischer-Tropsch (gasification-FT) conversion pathway in 2050 under three biomass availability scenarios. The case study results show that the differences in procurement costs and GHG emissions between energy crops and agricultural residues have a large impact on the layout of the supply chain. The supply-chain configuration tends to be more centralized with large-scale biorefineries when a supply region has an intensive and centralized distribution of biomass resources. The cost-supply curves demonstrated the technical potential of biofuels that could be obtained at a certain level of cost. Additionally, sensitivity analysis shows that the GHG emission credit from producing extra electricity during the gasification-FT process will be significantly reduced with a rising share of renewable electricity generation in the future. Space Exploration Architecture and Design Framework for Commercialization

The trend of space commercialization is changing the decision-making process for future space exploration architectures, and there is a growing need for a new decision-making framework that explicitly considers the interactions between the mission coordinator (i.e., government) and the commercial players. In response to this challenge, this paper develops a framework for space exploration and logistics decision making that considers the incentive mechanism to stimulate commercial participation in future space infrastructure development and deployment. By extending the state-of-the-art space logistics design formulations from the game-theoretic perspective, the relationship between the mission coordinator and commercial players is first analyzed, and then the formulation for the optimal architecture design and incentive mechanism in three different scenarios is derived. To demonstrate and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, a case study on lunar habitat infrastructure design and deployment is conducted. Results show how total mission demands and in-situ resource utilization system performances after deployment may impact the cooperation among stakeholders. As an outcome of this study, an incentive-based decision-making framework that can benefit both the mission coordinator and the commercial players from commercialization is derived, leading to a mutually beneficial space exploration between the government and the industry.

In this paper, we investigate a new variant of the multi-commodity network flow problem, taking into consideration multiple transport lines and time windows. This variant arises in a city logistics environment, more specifically in a long-haul passenger transport system that is also used to transport urban freight. We propose two mixed integer programming models for two objective functions: minimization of network operational costs and minimization of travel times. Since the problems under study are NP-hard, we propose three size reduction heuristics. In order to assess the performance of the proposed algorithms, we carried out computational experiments on a set of synthetic problem instances. We use the relative percentage deviation as performance criterion. For the cost objective function, a LP-and-Fix algorithm outperforms other methods in most tested instances, but for the travel time, a hybrid method (size reduction with LP-and-Fix algorithm) is, in general, better than other approaches.

Identification of Potential Off-Grid Municipalities With 100% Renewable Energy Supply for Future Design of Power Grids

An increasing number of municipalities are striving for energy autonomy. This study determines in which municipalities and at what additional cost energy autonomy is feasible for a case study of Germany. An existing municipal energy system optimization model is extended to include the industrial, commercial and personal transport sectors. Multiple regression methods are benchmarked in order to identify the model best suited for the transfer of individual optimization results to a large proportion of German municipalities. The resulting levelized cost of energy (LCOE) from the optimization of representative case study municipalities are transferred using energy-relevant indicators. The study demonstrates that energy autonomy is technically feasible in 6,314 (56%) municipalities. Thereby, the LCOEs increase in the autonomous case on average by 0.41 euro/kWh compared to the minimum cost scenario. Apart from energy demand, base-load-capable bioenergy and deep geothermal energy have the greatest influence on the LCOEs. Overall, it appears that municipal energy autonomy is not economically viable under current framework conditions. This study represents a starting point for defining possible scenarios in studies of future national energy system or transmission grid expansion planning, which for the first time consider completely energy autonomous municipalities.

Variable-Horizon Guidance for Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking to a Tumbling Target

In this paper, the trajectory planning problem for autonomous rendezvous and docking between a controlled spacecraft and a tumbling target is addressed. The use of a variable planning horizon is proposed in order to construct an appropriate maneuver plan, within an optimization-based framework. The involved optimization problem is nonconvex and features nonlinear constraints. The main contribution is to show that such problem can be tackled effectively by solving a finite number of linear programs. To this aim, a specifically conceived horizon search algorithm is employed in combination with a polytopic constraint approximation technique. The resulting guidance scheme provides the ability to identify favorable docking configurations, by exploiting the time-varying nature of the optimization problem endpoint. Simulation results involving the capture of the nonoperational EnviSat spacecraft indicate that the method is able to generate optimal trajectories at a fraction of the computational cost incurred by a state-of-the-art nonlinear solver.

Bio jet fuels derived from feedstock offer a sustainable alternative to meeting energy needs. Modeling supply chains that produce said fuels can lead to computationally prohibitive mixed integer linear programs (MILP) that consider optimal facility location and materials routing. The present work proposes an iterative machine learning-based hybrid solution procedure that transfers some of the responsibility of facility location to the learner. First, given a random selection of facility locations, a collection of model solutions is generated. Next, a neural network is fit to the collection of solutions, with facility locations being the input and total supply chain (SC) costs as the output. Then, the next set of locations is selected to optimize the predicted output of the neural network. Finally, the MILP optimization model is called to test the selected locations, and the results are fed back into the neural network and the process is repeated. Numerical experimentation demonstrates the proposed solution procedures yield near-optimal solutions with 0.10-0.18% increase in objective function value alongside a 40-65% reduction in computational time.

mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is a well-known approach for the cryptanalysis of a symmetric cipher. A number of MILP-based security analyses have been reported for non-linear (SBoxes) and linear layers. Researchers proposed word- and bit-wise SBox modeling techniques using a set of inequalities which helps in searching differential trails for a cipher. In this paper, we propose two new techniques to reduce the number of inequalities to represent the valid differential transitions for SBoxes. Our first technique chooses the best greedy solution with a random tiebreaker and achieves improved results for the 4-bit SBoxes of MIBS, LBlock, and Serpent over the existing results of Sun et al. [26]. Subset addition, our second approach, is an improvement over the algorithm proposed by Boura and Coggia. Subset addition technique is faster than Boura and Coggia [10] and also improves the count of inequalities. Our algorithm emulates the existing results for the 4-bit SBoxes of Minalpher, LBlock, Serpent, Prince, and Rectangle. The subset addition method also works for 5-bit and 6-bit SBoxes. We improve the boundary of minimum number inequalities from the existing results for 5-bit SBoxes of ASCON and SC2000. Application of subset addition technique for 6-bit SBoxes of APN, FIDES, and SC2000 enhances the existing results. By applying multithreading, we reduce the execution time needed to find the minimum inequality set over the existing techniques.

We propose a multilevel optimization algorithm (MLO) for solving large scale instances of the Multi-Period Battery Swapping Station Location Problem (MBSSLP), i.e., a problem for deciding the placement of battery swapping stations in an urban area. MLO generates a solution to an MBSSLP instance in three steps. First the problem size is iteratively reduced by coarsening. Then, a solution to the coarsest problem instance is determined, and finally the obtained solution is projected to more fine grained problem instances in reverse order until a solution to the original problem instance is obtained. We test our approach on benchmark instances with up to 10000 areas for placing stations and 100000 user trips. We compare MLO to solving a mixed integer linear program (MILP) in a direct way as well as solving the instances with a construction heuristic (CH). Results show that MLO scales substantially better for such large instances than the MILP or the CH.
