Impact of operational modelling choices on techno-economic modelling of local energy systems

Many techno-economic studies for the pre-design of local energy systems rely on mathematical programming. This comes with several modelling choices including simplified technological and economical models, temporal and spatial resolutions, or perfect foresight assumptions. On the basis of a single case study with complex decision making due to interdependent time scales, this paper shows the importance of evaluating and comparing the (cross-)impacts of the different modelling choices. The modelling choices tested are the inclusion of flexibility costs and constraints, the use of representative periods, the use of different methods to optimise operational decisions (including various rolling horizon methods), and the consideration of forecasts errors or not. The results illustrate the impact that flexibility costs and constraints can have and how they determine alternative modelling choices. They show under which condition representative periods can be used without introducing strong biases on the results. Finally, different rolling horizon strategies are compared, concluding on the validity of the perfect foresight assumption on the case. Results are discussed in terms of performance, validity, and computation times.

Day-Ahead Scheduling Strategy Optimization of Electric-Thermal Integrated Energy System to Improve the Proportion of New Energy

The coordinated use of electricity and a heat energy system can effectively improve the energy structure during winter heating in the northern part of China and improve the environmental pollution problem. In this paper, an economic scheduling model of an electric-thermal integrated energy system, including a wind turbine, regenerative electric boiler, solar heat collection system, biomass boiler, ground source heat pump and battery is proposed, and a biomass boiler was selected as the auxiliary heat source of the solar heat collection system. A mixed integer linear programming model was established to take the operating cost of the whole system as the target. A day-ahead optimization scheduling strategy considering the demand side response and improving new energy consumption is proposed. In order to verify the influence of the coordinated utilization of the flexible load and energy storage equipment on the optimal scheduling in the model built, three scenarios were set up. Scenario 3 contains energy storage and a flexible load. Compared with scenario 1, the total cost of scenario 3 was reduced by 51.5%, and the abandonment cost of wind energy was reduced by 43.3%. The use of a flexible load and energy storage can effectively reduce the cost and improve new energy consumption. By increasing the capacity of the energy-storage device, the wind power is completely absorbed, but the operation and maintenance cost is increased, so the capacity of energy storage equipment is allocated reasonably according to the actual situation.

The ever-increasing need for stable, seamless, high-speed connectivity places an enormous burden on the com-munications infrastructure, comprised of access, backhaul, and core networks. Furthermore, recent advances in access technologies shift the capacity bottleneck towards the newly popularized wireless backhaul network, which is also susceptible to different types of failures. In this paper, a wireless backhaul network design under reliability and survivability constraints is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to determine the minimum cost bandwidth assignment of wireless links. We developed an accelerated Benders decomposition algorithm to solve this model. Extensive computational experiments show the accuracy of the model proposed to tackle the problem and the efficiency of the solving method, particularly in larger networks.

An efficient GRASP-like algorithm for the multi-product straight pipeline scheduling problem

The present work deals with the multi-product straight pipeline scheduling problem. The considered straight pipeline system is used to transport refined petroleum products from a single source (refinery with storage tanks) to a single destination (distribution center). The main objective is to find a sequence of batches which aims to maximize the total volume to be transported via the pipeline, while meeting the daily customer demands over a fixed time horizon. Each batch contains only one product with a volume between its upper and lower bounds. Constraints related to inventory levels, batch settling periods and forbidden sequences between pairs of products must be respected, and pipeline stoppage periods should also be handled. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model and a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP)-like algorithm are proposed to tackle the problem under study. The MILP model is based on the discharging time axis with continuous repre-sentation for both time and volume formulation. The GRASP-like algorithm is composed of a construction method and an improvement procedure. The construction method generates a new sequence of batches in a random way with the use of a repair process to obtain an initial solution that satisfies all demands. Then, the improvement procedure is attempted to increase the fill rate of pipeline using volume optimization operators without change the sequence of products. A set of instances was generated from a real case study in order to validate the proposed approach. The performance of our approach is benchmarked against the MILP model (solved using Gurobi Solver), and the numerical experiments proved that the proposed approach obtains very competitive results both in term of solution quality and CPU time.

Investigating environmental and economic impacts of the 3D printing technology on supply chains: The case of tire production

The 3D printing technology is expected to revolutionize several industries including tire industry as this tech-nology can alter the tire supply chain to a more agile structure and significantly save on logistics costs, primarily due to the fact that tire is a bulky product requiring substantial transportation and inventory operations. This paper contributes to the literature by designing a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) required for the 3D production of tire and introducing a multi-product mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model yielding optimal de-cisions including facility locations and the material flows among them. A scenario-based stochastic programming approach is adopted to account for the uncertainty in demand. For the sake of comparison, the MILP model that corresponds to optimal management of the traditional production scheme is also offered. To demonstrate the applicability of the models, the paper employs them to optimally design the chain of an Iranian tire manufac-turer. Modeling parameters are predominantly drawn from the relevant literature. The results suggest that the productivity of the supply chain of 3D printing production is less sensitive to the management's risk-seeking level, compared to traditional production. The 3DP CLSC could be 51-61% economically more efficient than the traditional CLSC, depending on the management's strategy. From the environmental perspective, the 3D printing technology could help reduce the carbon emission of the chain by 9-10%. This could promise a cleaner tire production and distribution system in the future. Extensive sensitivity analysis is further conducted to un-derstand how model outputs vary with changing input parameters.

Solving the Two-Crane Scheduling Problem in the Pre-Steelmaking Process

This research is motivated by the practical pre-steelmaking stage in large iron and steel companies, which have steady and heavy demands for the steelmaking production process. Our problem studied the pre-steelmaking stage, which consists of two steps that are needed in each convertor before the steelmaking process. During each step, a necessary transportation must be operated by a crane. In contrast to the classical two-machine flowshop problem during which both machines are fixed, these transporting operations are performed by two mounted, removeable cranes. Our problem is scheduling two-crane operations for the sake of minimizing the last convertors' completion time (makespan);that is, the last finish time among the total operation of the two cranes is minimized. This study was concerned with resolving the interference between two cranes by determining the sequence of loading operations and how each crane avoids the other in order to let it complete its next operation first. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model was developed to represent the problem, and we further present the computational complexity of the problem. The result implies that our problem is very difficult to solve, and it is computationally challenging to solve the model. A special case is provided, which can be optimally solved in polynomial time. Furthermore, an evolutionary algorithm cuckoo search (CS) algorithm was attempted to obtain near-optimal solutions for medium- and large-scale problems. Finally, the efficiency and effectiveness of our methods were validated by numerical results in both simulated instances as well as real data from a practical production process.

Redefining hybrid flow shop group scheduling: Unveiling a novel hybrid modeling paradigm and assessing 48 MILP and CP models

A hybrid flow shop group scheduling problem (HFGSP) involves two distinct sub-problems, the arrangement of groups and the configuration of jobs within each group. Constructing its mathematical model based on the classification of these sub-problems can help better understand the problem's characteristics. However, the existing literature fails to establish MILP models of HFGSP based on the interrelation between each subproblem and the respective process constraints satisfied by each subproblem. To address this gap, our study first categorizes all the constraints in the HFGSP according to several factors: group arrangement, job arrangement within the group, process requirements between groups, process requirements between jobs from the same group, process requirements between adjacent stages, and the relationship between the decision variables of completion time and the objective constraint. Following this classification, we construct 48 available MILP models of HFGSP. Additionally, we also propose an efficient constraint programming (CP) model of HFGSP. Numerous experiments are conducted to verify the correctness and performance of all 48 MILP models across different test instances, analyze the complexities of all models, and excavate their intrinsic characteristics. Through our evaluation for the 48 models, we observe that models 24 and 48 exhibit superior performance. This highlights the effectiveness of the hybrid modeling approach, which synergistically combines sequence-based modeling for groups and position-based adjacent modeling for jobs within each group. The utilization of this hybrid modeling approach enables the construction of high-quality MILP models for addressing the HFGSP problem. Our intention is to bridge the gap between MILP modeling of HFGSP and problem-specific algorithms, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the problem and offering potential solutions.

The invasive emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) causes damage to street trees which is estimated to reach US$ 900 million over the next 30 years. Although millions of dollars are spent annually to control this species, spatiotemporal management plans are often based on rules of thumb that ignore future pest dispersal. Here, we reveal an optimal management strategy to protect urban trees in North America from A. planipennis. To achieve this, we embedded a pest dispersal model within a mixed integer programming framework. We discovered that optimized strategies consistently outperformed those based on rules of thumb, potentially resulting in the protection of an additional nearly 1 million street trees and savings of $ 629 million. Critically, the best management strategies always relied on quarantines and biological control (constituting 98-99% and 1-2% of the project budget, respectively), in contrast with current practices, where federal spending has been diverted to biological control. Our findings serve to inform future pest control efforts and can help protect many more trees from this invasive species.

Home Health Care (HHC) services are essential for delivering healthcare programs to patients in their homes, with the goal of reducing hospitalization rates and improving patients' quality of life. However, HHC organizations face significant challenges in scheduling and routing caregivers for home care visits due to complex criteria and constraints. This paper addresses these challenges by considering both caregiver assignments and transportation logistics. The objective is to minimize the total travel distance and CO2 2 emissions while ensuring a balanced workload for caregivers, meeting patients' preferences, synchronization, precedence, and availability constraints. To tackle this problem, we propose a multiperiodic Green Home Health Care (GHHC) framework. In the first stage, we utilize multiobjective programming and the NSGA-II algorithm to generate Pareto front solutions that consider travel distance and CO2 2 emissions. In the second stage, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to balance caregivers' workload by assigning them to the patient routes generated in the first stage. The results highlight the trade-off between shorter routes and lower emissions. Furthermore, we examine the impact of prioritizing continuity of care and patient satisfaction. This research provides valuable insights into addressing the scheduling and routing challenges in HHC services, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally friendly healthcare delivery.

IGDT-Based Robust Optimization for Multicarrier Energy System Management

In this paper, the information-gap decision theory (IGDT)-based robust problem model for multicarrier energy system (MES) management is presented. It is noted that in the proposed problem, electrical and gas energies are inputs of MES or energy hub, and electrical and heating energies are outputs of MES. The output electrical energy of hub provided by renewable energy sources (RESs), storage system, combined heat and power (CHP) system is managed by hub manager, and they do not participate in the market and input electrical energy. Also, it is considered that input electrical energy is bought from the PoolCo and bilateral contract markets. Moreover, the CHP is only connecting element for different energies. Therefore, the deterministic problem model expresses in the first step, where its objective function is minimized of hubs energy cost. Also, the constraints of problem are power flow equations and indexes limit in electrical, natural gas and district heating networks, PoolCo and bilateral contract market models, RES, storage system and CHP equations. This problem is as mixed integer nonlinear programming, where in the next step, the equivalent mixed integer linear programming model is presented because this new model can obtain the global optimal solution with low calculation error and time. In addition, the different loads, energy price in PoolCo market and RESs output power are uncertain parameters. Hence, this paper for considering uncertainty parameters presents the IGDT-based robust optimization for proposed problem. Finally, this problem is applied to standard test network with GAMS software, and thus the capability of the proposed problem investigates.
