Retrofitting coal-fired power plants (CPPs) is a way to accommodate ever-increasing variable renewable energy (VRE) in coal-dominated power systems in countries like China and India. Yet, how to retrofit the CPPS cost-effectively is an important issue to address. This paper proposes a multi-objective two-stage planning approach based on the none-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II). It considers both economic and flexibility requirements for the power system. At the planning stage, optimal technical options considering investment constraints and technical constraints are generated. At the operation stage, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) based model considering the detailed start-up and shut-down processes of the CPP is established. Then the optimal solution is selected from the Pareto solution set using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Finally, case studies demonstrate the proposed approaches and show the potential of retrofitting CPPs to enhance power system flexibility.

A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimisation model has been created to be integrated in an energy management system (EMS). This model, coordinates the utilisation of various energy sources in optimising home energy scenarios within a microgrid. The objective is to minimise costs while maximising the utilisation of renewable energy sources and decreasing reliance on the grid. The findings indicate that the algorithm can fulfil customers’ energy needs while adhering to specified targets. Particularly notable success was observed in the second scenario, with minimal grid dependency and cost savings for customers.

The pursuit of self-driving networks is increasing pressure on adopting intelligent, edge-based networking services. However, deploying autonomous network models within operational and large-scale infrastructures entails substantial risks that require rigorous verification and validation procedures. In this context, the application of a Network Digital Twin (NDT) is emerging as a viable approach towards intelligent network decision-making based on high-fidelity models built upon digital representations of physical network devices (i.e., Digital Twins). In this paper, we take the first steps towards efficiently provisioning NDT models. To that end, we introduce the Digital Twin Network Provisioning Problem (DigiNet), which encompasses the optimal placement of NDT models and the efficient collection of telemetry data for synchronizing NDT models with their physical counterparts. We theoretically formalize DigiNet as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model and present a polynomial-time heuristic. Our results show that DigiNet outperforms baseline approaches by up to 10x regarding the number of NDT models provisioned.

Grid-scale energy storage systems are becoming an essential element to effectively support the rapid increased use of renewable energy sources in the power network. An energy management system (EMS) is essential to optimize the energy dispatching operations by controlling the operating point of each of the system components. The present work proposes an optimal scheduling for an EMS of a utility-scale photovoltaic power plant (PV) coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The EMS model is based on a computationally efficient optimization logic formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. In the proposed case study, PV hourly generation data and historical electricity market prices from the CAISO electricity market in the United States, California, are used as input. The achievable profit from energy arbitrage of PV plus BESS systems is determined considering the impact of battery degradation.

Ground-source heat pumps (GSHP) are widely used in integrated energy systems for their high energy efficiency ratio, but their excessive use would result in soil temperature attenuation, which negatively impacts the performance of the GSHP. The integration of photovoltaic/thermal collectors and ground-source heat pumps (PVT-GSHP) is considered a promising approach to address the problem of soil temperature attenuation. However, the coupling of heating energy among various energy supply devices and storage units and the soil thermal balance for long-term operation require coordinated scheduling of the system. In this paper, the soil temperature dynamics for long-term operations are established. The optimal scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem considering the energy balance and complicated operating constraints of energy supply devices and storage units. Numerical testing results demonstrate that the optimal operation strategies of PVT-GSHP can ensure the low-carbon and economic operation of the system in cold regions. The soil thermal imbalance ratio could be reduced from around 37.5% to only 4%, thus the soil temperature can be well sustained.

To address power outages, cooperative utilization of consumer-side resources through power sharing and exchange is expected to enhance resilience. In our previous study, we proposed the multilevel resource priority management method that considers the use of individual resources and incorporates load suppression. Building on this foundation, this study proposes an extended resilience management method that dynamically prioritizes consumer resources based on the state of consumer resilience. In this method, the tradeoff between consumer priority and mutual-support priority is defined as a multistage dynamical priority management model and formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming optimization problem. As a numerical example, the simulation of a consumer model with 512 households representing the size of one feeder in a distribution system was conducted. Furthermore, an equality index was introduced to assess variations in resilience services between each consumer. Consequently, the relationship between the priority management model, cooperative group size, and equality index was clarified.

The term “smart grid” describes the future generation of electrical power networks, which are very complicated systems. It must take into account all aspects of the electrical system, increasing its intelligence and adaptability. In response to shifts in the electrical market, this idea is put out with the intention of controlling the rising demand while guaranteeing higher service quality and enhanced safety. This research presents an urban scenario that incorporates dispersed energy sources into a smart grid. The research incorporates renewable energy sources like solar panels and tiny windmills into the system, as well as battery storage and grid-connected vehicles that can power the electrical grid by drawing electricity from the storage device. So, to maximize the energy production and absorption systems as well as the recharging and discharging time for a home user’s electric car, a mixed integer linear programming is proposed. Additionally, a number of case studies are provided by changing important variables using the Taguchi technique of design of experiments in order to identify the best solution and demonstrate how each influences the system’s complexity.

Power system with a high proportion of renewable energy (RE) access usually faces the problem of insufficient flexibility adjustment, resulting in a large number of power abandonment and shortage. To enhance the flexibility of the future power system, this paper proposes a source/load/storage flexible resource planning model based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to determine the capacity needs of various flexible resources, under the premise of ensuring balance between power supply and RE consumption. Considering various flexibility resources, the proposed model makes overall and coordinated planning for thermal generator (TG) flexibility transformation, peak shaving/valley filling demand response (DR), and energy storage (ES). Meanwhile, to ensure the reliability of power supply, the reserve capacity of the system and the bidirectional requirement of system adjustment are also considered in the constraint. Finally, based on the simulation study of provincial power system, the results show that with the increase of RE capacity, the flexibility resources can effectively reduce the power shortage rate and power abandonment rate.

In a recent paper by Bayley et al. [2018. "A Hybrid Benders Approach for Coordinated Capacitated Lot-Sizing of Multiple Product Families with Set-Up Times."International Journal of Production Research56 (3): 1326-1344] on a capacitated lot-sizing problem, a Benders-based approach is described. Strengthening the master problem is based on inequalities that should be valid. We provide insight indicating that this is not the case for those inequalities proposed by Bayley et al. (2018).

Under the “Dual Carbon” goal, the energy internet and low-carbon electricity have become major trends in current development. The objective of this paper is to enhance the energy efficiency of the integrated energy system, optimise the operational state of the equipment, and investigate the performance and potential for improvement of the system in terms of carbon emissions. This paper concentrates on the particular effects of energy storage equipment on economic costs, carbon emissions and wind curtailment subsequent to its introduction into the integrated energy system. This paper presents an innovative approach to the two stages of P 2 G, utilising an electrolytic cell, methane reactor and hydrogen fuel cell. Furthermore, a cogeneration strategy with an adjustable thermoelectric ratio and a tiered carbon trading framework aimed at facilitating the decrease of emissions. For this purpose, YALMIP and CPLEX are utilized to develop a low-carbon model of the power system. This model is subsequently employed to assess the effects of energy storage technology on both emissions reduction and economic performance. The operational outcomes of the model are subjected to rigorous examination, thereby furnishing substantial impetus for the optimisation of the energy system.
