In this paper, on the basis of the classical Retinex enhancement algorithm, we propose a msr (Multi-Scale Retinex) algorithm based on HSI color space for foggy images enhancement. This algorithm can self-adaptively choose the Scale of the filter function, and it can automatically merge the enhancement effect of the multi-scales. The algorithm can highlight the detail characteristics of target while maintaining the background smoothly. In order to improve the brightness and contrast of the image, we use the Weber's law and the characteristics of human visual system to select the scale parameters, which can better realized the foggy images enhancement.

Aiming at the problem of low defect detection rate of PCB images captured by cameras in industrial scenarios under low-light environments, an MGIE (Mean-Gamma Image Enhancement) image brightness enhancement algorithm and the corresponding FPGA design scheme are proposed. Firstly, the RGB image is converted into the YCrCb color space, and the illumination component Y is separated. Then, the illumination component Y is enhanced by the msr (Multi-Scale Retinex) algorithm based on multi-scale mean filtering, and the Gamma correction algorithm is used to adjust the brightness. Subsequently, the processed Y channel is fused with the Cr and Cb channels to obtain the final output. Secondly, after algorithm research, this paper elaborates on the algorithm design and deployment scheme based on FPGA. The MGIE IP core is designed in the HLS (High-Level Synthesis) environment, and optimization and acceleration are carried out by means of creating look-up tables and constructing PIPELINE. Significantly, this research is capable of real-time processing of images in video. Specifically, images are captured in real time by the OV5640 camera, and the processed images are immediately displayed on the LCD screen. The experimental results show that the MGIE algorithm has remarkable effectiveness in processing low-light PCB images, with a PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) reaching 17.34 and an SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Measure) reaching 0.79. After the end-to-end deployment, the processing speed of 1280 x 720 and 640 x 640 pixel images reaches 30fps/s and 70fps/s, respectively, meeting the needs of real-time processing.

Camera traps providing enormous number of images during a season help to observe remotely animals in the wild. However, analysis of such image collection manually is impossible. In this research, we develop a method for automatic animal detection based on background modeling of scene under complex shooting. First, we design a fast algorithm for image selection without motions. Second, the images are processed by modified Multi-Scale Retinex algorithm in order to align uneven illumination. Finally, background is subtracted from incoming image using adaptive threshold. A threshold value is adjusted by saliency map, which is calculated using pyramid consisting of the original image and images modified by msr algorithm. Proposed method allows to achieve high estimators of animals detection.

In recent years, there has been an emerging demand for utilizing biometrics especially face recognition in access control of secured areas and other applications like identity validation. In this paper, we develop a real-world face recognition system includes face detection and alignment, feature extraction under wireless networks. The proposed facial information extraction and face recognition system is capable of using real-time video from wireless networks. In order to reduce the influence of illumination, many preprocessing methods including Histogram equalization, Homomorphic filtering and msr algorithm are applied. For enhancing the performance and accuracy with the variations of pose and illumination, Gabor feature is extracted to represent the facial images. Experiments on a real-world dataset of 100 images belong to 20 persons are tested and results prove the system has good performance in practical situation.

Aiming at the low illumination image, we proposed a method to make images clearer which is based on our forward fog-removed method[7]. This method combines Multi-Scale Retinex(msr) algorithm with wavelet transform algorithm. The improved method firstly use msr algorithm to enhance the whole image, then the wavelet transform algorithm is used to strengthen the details information of image, finally a clearly image which has better overall contrast and more clear details information can be obtained. Through analyzing subjective and objective evaluation of the experimental results, the performance indicators of image which are processed by the proposed method in this paper are higher than those processed by other algorithms.

Numerous techniques are available to enhance images and videos, among which Multi-Scale Retinex(msr) is a most effective and popular one. However, the huge computation load limits the algorithm's future application, which emphasizes highly on effectiveness of real-time processing. In this work, we propose an efficient method to speed up the msr for real-time video enhancement via Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUDA). We found through experiments that the difference between the properties of consecutive frames is small, which makes it unnecessary to update the parameters of the algorithm each frame of the video. Thus, we make use of this character and further increase the speed of the algorithm. Results show that our method is able to reduce the achievement time significantly and get a maximum speedup ratio near 200×.
