Global optimization of mixed-integer bilevel programming problems

Two approaches that solve the mixed-integer nonlinear bilevel programming problem to global optimality are introduced. The first addresses problems mixed-integer nonlinear in outer variables and C-2-nonlinear in inner variables. The second adresses problems with general mixed-integer nonlinear functions in outer level. Inner level functions may be mixed-integer nonlinear in outer variables, linear, polynomial, or multilinear in inner integer variables, and linear in inner continuous variables. This second approach is based on reformulating the mixed-integer inner problem as continuous via its vertex polyheral convex hull representation and solving the resulting nonlinear bilevel optimization problem by a novel deterministic global optimization framework. Computational studies illustrate proposed approaches.

Optimal Allocation of Protective Resources in Shortest-Path Networks

This article introduces a game-theoretic approach for allocating protection resources among the components of a network so as to maximize its robustness to external disruptions. Specifically, we consider shortest-path networks where disruptions may result in traffic flow delays through the affected components or even in the complete loss of some elements. A multilevel program is proposed to identify the set of components to harden so as to minimize the length of the shortest path between a supply node and a demand node after a worst-case disruption of some unprotected components. An implicit enumeration algorithm is then developed to solve the multilevel problem to optimality. The approach is streamlined by solving the lower-level interdiction problem heuristically at each node of an enumeration tree and by using some variable fixing rules to reduce the dimension of the lower-level problems. A thorough computational investigation demonstrates that the proposed solution method is able to identify optimal protection strategies for networks of significant size. The paper is concluded with a study of the sensitivity of the solution approach to variations of the problem parameters such as the level of disruption and protective resources and the distribution of the arc lengths and delays.

In recent years, a lot of effort has been dedicated to develop strategies to defend networks against possible cascade failures or malicious viral attacks. On the one hand, network safety is investigated from a preventive perspective. On the other hand, blocking models have been proposed for scenarios in which the attack has already taken place causing a harmful spreading throughout the network. In this work, we combine these two perspectives. More precisely, following the framework defender-attacker-defender, we consider a model of prevention, attack, and damage containment using a three-stage, zero-sum game. The defender is not only able to adopt preventive strategies, but also to defend the network after an attack takes place. Assuming that the attacker acts optimally, we compute a defensive strategy for the first stage that minimizes the total damage to the network in the end of the third stage. Our contribution consists of considering this problem as a trilevel mixed-integer program and designing an exact algorithm for it based on tools developed for multilevel programming.

A multilevel approach for modelling vehicle routing problem with uncertain travelling time

Vehicle routing problem is concerned with finding optimal collection or delivery routes in a transportation network, beginning and ending at a central depot, for a fleet of vehicles to serve a set of customers under some constraints. Assuming the travel times between two customers are uncertain variables, this paper proposes an uncertain multilevel programming model for a vehicle routing problem, of which the leader's object is to minimize the total waiting times of the customers, and the followers' objects are to minimize the waiting times of the vehicles for the beginning moments of the customers' time windows. The uncertain multilevel programming model is transformed into a determinacy programming model, and an intelligent algorithm is designed for solving the crisp model.

Investment incentives for flexible demand options under different market designs

This paper analyzes investment incentives for flexible manufacturing facilities under different market designs. We propose a multi-stage equilibrium model incorporating endogenous determination of generation capacity investment, network expansion and redispatch based on the model introduced by Grimm et al. (2016), including flexibilization of industrial electricity consumption. The model allows to investigate incentives for flexibilization and the impact of flexible industrial electricity consumers on the system. An application to the German electricity market reveals that flexible industrial electricity consumption can be profitable for firms. If the share of flexible electricity consumers is high, price fluctuations are mitigated, which lowers the individual cost savings from demand flexibility. Comparing different market designs, positive impacts of flexible electricity demand on the system are observed in both the system optimum and the market equilibrium. In scenarios with flexible industrial electricity consumption, welfare is considerably higher than in those without. This is due to lower electricity costs of industrial consumers, but more importantly due to less investment in conventional power generation as well as a reduced transmission network expansion. However, a comparison of nodal and uniform pricing underlines the importance of regional price signals with respect to an efficient allocation of flexible industrial demand.

A dual-mode NAND flash memory: 1-Gb multilevel and high-performance 512-Mb single-level modes

A 116.7-mm(2) NAND flash memory having two modes, 1-Gb multilevel program cell (MLC) and high-performance 512-Mb single-level program cell (SLC) modes, is fabricated with a 0.15-mum CMOS technology. Utilizing simultaneous operation of four independent banks, the device achieves 1.6 and 6.9 MB/s program throughputs for MLC and SLC modes, respectively. The two-step bitline setup scheme suppresses the peak current below 60 mA. The wordline ramping technique avoids program disturbance. The SLC mode uses the 0.5-V incremental step pulse and self-boosting program inhibit scheme to achieve high program performance, and the MLC mode uses 0.15-V incremental step pulse and local self-boosting program inhibit scheme to tightly control the cell threshold voltage V-th distributions. With the small wordline and bitline pitches of 0.3 -mum and 0.36-mum, respectively, the cell V-th, shift due to the floating gate coupling is about 0.2 V. The read margins between adjacent two program states are optimized resulting in the nonuniform cell V-th distribution for MLC mode.

Tri-level decision-making with multiple followers: Model, algorithm and case study

Tri-level decision-making arises to address compromises among interacting decision entities distributed throughout a three-level hierarchy;these entities are respectively termed the top-level leader, the middle-level follower and the bottom-level follower. This study considers an uncooperative situation where multiple followers at the same (middle or bottom) level make their individual decisions independently but consider the decision results of their counterparts as references through information exchanged among themselves. This situation is called a reference-based uncooperative multi-follower tri-level (MFTL) decision problem which appears in many real-world applications. To solve this problem, we need to find an optimal solution achieving both the Stackelberg equilibrium in the three-level vertical structure and the Nash equilibrium among multiple followers at the same horizontal level. In this paper, we first propose a general linear MFTL decision model for this situation. We then develop a MFTL Kth-Best algorithm to find an optimal solution to the model. Since the optimal solution means a compromised result in the uncooperative situation and it is often imprecise or ambiguous for decision entities to identify their related satisfaction, we use a fuzzy programming approach to characterize and evaluate the solution obtained. Lastly, a real-world case study on production-inventory planning illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed MFTL decision techniques. (c) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A bilevel program is a mathematical program involving functions defined implicitly as solutions to another mathematical program. We discuss a method for extracting derivative information on the implicit function, which is especially efficient when the lower-level problem has simple bounds on the variables and/or many inactive constraints. Computational experience on problems with up to 230 variables and 30 constraints is presented.

In this paper, we define a validity measure for fuzzy criterion clustering which is a novel approach to fuzzy clustering that in addition to being non-distance-based, addresses the cluster validity problem. The model is then recast as a bilevel fuzzy criterion clustering problem. We propose an algorithm for this model that solves both the validity and clustering problems. Mitigating the vulnerability of an air-high-speed railway transportation network: From the perspective of predisruption response

Both the high-speed railway and air transportation network are the backbone of the interregional transport network and cover important cities in a country. Taking cities as nodes, a comprehensive interregional transportation network consisting of high-speed railways and civil aviation can be constructed. This network undertakes a huge passenger transportation task, so the failure of this network will cause serious economic losses and even casualties. In the Air-HighSpeed Railway Transportation Network (A-HSRTN), the two transport modes can operate independently and can be alternatives. The analysis of the A-HSRTN helps planners to have a more comprehensive understanding of the vulnerability of the interregional passenger transport system. Mechanical failure, extreme weather and even man-made sabotage can threaten the operation of airports and stations. Optimizing the deployment of prevention resources can avoid or reduce the loss caused by those failure events in the A-HSRTN. This paper establishes a tri-level model to optimize the deployment of prevention resource from the perspective of predisruption response. This model takes the high-speed railway and air transportation system as an integrated transportation network to assign the limited prevention resources. The model aims to minimize the travel demand that cannot be satisfied in the worst failure scenario. Taking the A-HSRTN in mainland China as an example, this paper analyzes the model performance and the defense strategy obtained by this model. These case studies demonstrate that the method and model proposed in this paper can mitigate the vulnerability of the A-HSRTN.
