A minimalistic set of multimedia instructions introduced into FA-RISC microprocessors implements SIMD-MIMD parallelism with insignificant changes to the underlying microprocessor. Thus, a software video decoder attains MPEG video and audio decompression and playback at real-time rates of 30 frames per second, on an entry-level workstation. Our general-purpose parallel subword instructions can accelerate a variety of multimedia programs.

The MADE constraint system provides excellent opportunities to introduce constraints in a multimedia application. multimedia applications are not only a good place to experiment with constraint systems;constraints in a multimedia environment are almost indispensable. Due to the overwhelming amount of data and the number of relations between several parts of this data, multimedia applications almost demand the support of a constraint management system. The MADE constraint system combines the object oriented programming paradigm, inherited from the mC++ language, the declarative constraint programming paradigm and the special requirements imposed upon the constraint system by the multimedia environment. Among other things, the MADE constraint system provides parallel satisfaction techniques;several constraints may be solved simultaneously and this satisfaction process is performed in parallel with the application. This not only reduces the time needed to solve the constraints, it also allows the multimedia application to proceed with its presentation while (beneath the surface) the constraints are maintained. This not only holds for the parts of the presentation that are not constrained at all, but also for those parts that are. Furthermore, the constraint system is transparent to the multimedia application no special coding or preparation of the objects in the application is necessary. Constraints can be added later to the application without much work. Besides that, it is also possible to add and remove constraints at runtime;objects may be constrained for only a period of the time the application is running.

Background The potential value of multimedia programs as an accessory instrument for medical education has already been demonstrated in several areas. However, most of them lack adequate validation. The authors proposed this study in order to develop and evaluate a computer multimedia program, aiming at providing a more attractive and state of the art learning tool in dermatology. Methods The cybertutor was developed containing clinical cases, self-education classes, and short video presentations. In order to evaluate its impact, 50 undergraduate students attending the third year of Medical School at UFRGS were randomized into two groups: group 1 was submitted to a multimedia program on a specific dermatological subject parasite infestations, and group 2 to standard classes on the same subject. Both classes were taught by an experienced teacher, on the same subject and at the same time. In the end, the level of knowledge acquisition for the two groups was evaluated by a multiple choice test. Results The average of correct answers was 11.16 (SD=1.625) in group 1 and 11.96 (SD=1.645) in group 2. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups (P=0.09). The majority (80%) of the students who attended the cybertutor group showed interest in taking part in similar activities. Conclusions According to this study, multimedia programs may be used for undergraduate education in Dermatology as a complementary educational tool. Contact with an instructor is still considered to be important and should be offered simultaneously.

This paper combines work done in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, multimedia Systems and Coordination programming to derive a framework for Distributed multimedia Systems based on asynchronous timed computations expressed in a certain coordination formalism. More to the point, we propose the development of multimedia programming frameworks based on the declarative logic programming setting and in particular the framework of object-oriented timed concurrent constraint programming (OO-TCCP). The real-time extensions that have been proposed for the concurrent constraint programming framework are coupled with the object-oriented and inheritance mechanisms that have been developed for logic programs yielding an integrated declarative environment for multimedia objects modelling, composition and synchronisation. Furthermore, we show how the framework can be implemented in the general-purpose coordination language MANIFOLD without the need for using special architectures or real-time languages. Java Media Framework (JMF) is platform-independent multimedia programming framework which enables easy and fast development of collaborative applications. This paper describes our work on building a high efficient multimedia collaboration system using JMF. We introduce a new rendering approach to optimize the performance of JMF and add screen capturing capability as well as new codecs. Based on this enhanced framework, a high efficient and platform-independent conferencing client named Global-MMCS AVPortlet is developed. The performance evaluation shows that it outperforms other well-known video collaboration tools.

This paper presents the functions of a multimedia program developed under the project "Using Multi-lingual Web-based Distance Teaching Mode and Problem-based Learning Approach to Enhance Engineering Students' Learning Interest and English Standard". The program comprises of three functions, namely Interactive Exercises, Graph Plotting and Language Translation. The last function is subdivided into web-based dictionary, essay to link, spell check and text to speech. The role and the structures of these functions are examined in this paper.

As computers are increasingly used for communicating information, multimedia has become an important component of interactive applications. Effective communication with multimedia requires tight media integration, highly interactive control over multimedia, and the use of multimedia to support group interactions. This paper shows how the MVC paradigm for user interface development can be extended to support temporal media. The resulting framework allows easy specification of media-integrated interactive applications, including multimedia groupware. All examples in this paper have been implemented in Clock, a novel programming environment, and run on IBM, SGI, and Sun workstations.

The main purpose of the program graphs that is a visual representation of basic graph-concepts and graph-algorithms using a colouring process on graphs created within the program. The program was created in the Delphi environment by our student for his thesis, and enables the teacher to complete his/her lectures so that topics can be more comprehensible as well as saving the teacherpsilas time when he/she prepares text materials and presentations. Students using this program can revise subject-matter and understand it more deeply. They can easily prepare their assignments with the aid of program as well. This paper explores just a few ideas that have proved successful in enhancing education and optimization of studentspsila study habits.
