A Method for Generating a Well-Distributed Pareto Set in multiple objective Mixed Integer Linear Programs Based on the Decision Maker's Initial Aspiration Level

This paper attempt to generate a representative subset of the Pareto optimal set for multiple objective mixed integer linear programming problem using the weighted L-1 norm distance. The procedure presented in this paper is somewhat similar to the one used in the ideal-point methods and its aim is to generate at each iteration the closest-points to the ideal vector corresponding to the decision maker's initial aspiration level for a new tradeoff parameter. Unlike most of the known algorithms for generating a discrete representation of the Pareto optimal set, the procedure generates at each iteration a nondominated point by solving only one mixed integer linear programming problem. The obtained solution minimizes the weighted L1 norm distance to the ideal vector with respect to the distance between the ideal vector and previously found vectors. More generally, this approach is able to generate all Pareto optimal solutions, where all of the decision variables are restricted to be integer. In order to explain the presented details, several illustrative examples are provided.

Fuzzy φ-convexity and fuzzy decision making

The notion of convexity and its various generalization is important for quantitative and qualitative studies in operations research or applied mathematics. It has also been considered by many authors in fuzzy set theory. In this paper, we study the concept of Phi-convex and Phi-quasiconvex fuzzy sets which was proposed by Chen et al. [1], and develop some useful extrema properties of these fuzzy sets. We prove that any local maximizer of a Phi-convex fuzzy set is also a global maximizer, and that any strict local maximizer of a Phi-quasiconvex fuzzy set is also a global maximizer. We also study the class of strictly Phi-convex (respectively, strictly Phi-quasiconvex) fuzzy sets that is more restricted than the class of Phi-convex (respectively, Phi-quasiconvex) fuzzy sets. We prove for both families of strictly Phi-convex and strictly Phi-quasiconvex fuzzy sets that every local maximizer is also the unique global maximizer. Land use optimization through bridging multiobjective optimization and multicriteria decision-making models (case study: Tilabad Watershed, Golestan Province, Iran)

This study aims to present an efficient methodology for land use optimization based on minimization of runoff and sediment and maximization of economic benefits, occupational opportunities, and land use suitability in the Tilabad watershed in northeast of Iran. The land use map of the area was prepared using the Landsat satellite images and field surveys. The amounts of runoff and sediment were estimated via SWAT model. The TOPSIS multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) approach was applied on the results of the multiobjective optimization (MOO) based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA II) to choose the final optimal solution among the Pareto solutions front generated by MOO. The results indicated that the area of agriculture and rangelands should decrease, and the area of forests should increase to achieve the defined objectives. Overall, results indicated that integration of MOO and MCDM provides an efficient procedure for land use optimization in a complex watershed. Recommendations for Resource Managers The optimization of land use allocation across a complex watershed requires the combined application of several models and techniques to achieve a sustainable decision-making process. By optimization of land use patterns according to the final solution, the surface runoff and sediment load of the watershed will decline, while the economic profit and land use suitability will improve. Despite using a maximization objective function, the land-based job opportunities might decrease across a watershed by optimization of land use allocation, but this can be considered as an opportunity for provision of manpower to other socioeconomic sectors.

The electrification of construction machinery has created a perceptible future trend of the development of electric construction machinery collaboration systems (ECMCSs). However, there is a lack of research on energy-efficient operation of ECMCS. This paper proposes a theoretical configuration and scheduling framework promoting the applications of ECMCSs. In the configuration stage, this paper considers the effect of charging time and proposes an electric matching factor to achieve an optimal system configuration. In the scheduling stage, a multi-objective scheduling problem is formulated for achieving energy-efficient system operation, which considers the transport volume, cost and idle time. A validation of the framework was carried out using a case study that found the optimal system solution, while the advantages of the considered ECMCS compared to a fossil fuel-powered system were discussed. The impact of battery and charging technology developments was also assessed. This framework can be widely applied to deployment of ECMCSs.

A projection multi-objective SVM method for multi-class classification

Support Vector Machines (SVMs), originally proposed for classifications of two classes, have become a very popular technique in the machine learning field. For multi-class classifications, various single-objective models and multi-objective ones have been proposed. However,in most single-objective models, neither the different costs of different misclassifications nor the users' preferences were considered. This drawback has been taken into account in multi-objective models. In these models, large and hard second-order cone programs(SOCPs) were constructed ane weakly Pareto-optimal solutions were offered. In this paper, we propose a Projected Multi-objective SVM (PM), which is a multi-objective technique that works in a higher dimensional space than the object space. For PM, we can characterize the associated Pareto-optimal solutions. Additionally, it significantly alleviates the computational bottlenecks for classifications with large numbers of classes. From our experimental results, we can see PM outperforms the single-objective multi-class SVMs (based on an all-together method, one-against-all method and one-against-one method) and other multi-objective SVMs. Compared to the single-objective multi-class SVMs, PM provides a wider set of options designed for different misclassifications, without sacrificing training time. Compared to other multi-objective methods, PM promises the out-of-sample quality of the approximation of the Pareto frontier, with a considerable reduction of the computational burden.

Solving the multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem with a novel parallel branch and bound algorithm

This work presents a novel parallel branch and bound algorithm to efficiently solve to optimality a set of instances of the multi-objective flexible job shop scheduling problem for the first time, to the very best of our knowledge. It makes use of the well-known NSGA-II algorithm to initialize its upper bound. The algorithm is implemented for shared-memory architectures, and among its main features, it incorporates a grid representation of the solution space, and a concurrent priority queue to store and dispatch the pending sub-problems to be solved. We report the optimal Pareto front of thirteen well-known instances from the literature, which were unknown before. They will be very useful for the scientific community to provide more accuracy in the performance measurement of their algorithms. Indeed, we carefully analyze the performance of NSGA-II on these instances, comparing the results against the optimal ones computed in this work. Extensive computational experiments show that the proposed algorithm using 24 cores achieves a speedup of 15.64x with an efficiency of 65.20%.

Designing and Evaluating Sustainable Supply Chains: A Carbon Market Oriented Approach

Increasing regulatory legislations for carbon and waste management and the focus on corporate social responsibility are driving a major focus on supply chain sustainability. In this research, a goal programming model is proposed to address a supply chain design problem with environmental considerations. Carbon emissions (environmental dimension) and total logistics cost (economic dimension) are considered in order to evaluate the supply chain performance. A crucial contribution of our work is that, together with incorporating regulatory environmental constraints such as emissions “cap” and putting a price tag on carbon emissions, we comprehensively model compliance strategies for the supply chain including suppliers and sub-contractors selection, technology acquisition, and transportation modes configuration. The results obtained show that this approach is a viable decision tool and offer a good framework for designing and evaluating efficient and environmental supply chains.

Data for TROTS - The Radiotherapy Optimisation Test Set

The Radiotherapy Optimisation Test Set (TROTS) is an extensive set of problems originating from radiotherapy (radiation therapy) treatment planning. This dataset is created for 2 purposes: (1) to supply a large-scale dense dataset to measure performance and quality of mathematical solvers, and (2) to supply a dataset to investigate the multi-criteria optimisation and decision-making nature of the radiotherapy problem. The dataset contains 120 problems (patients), divided over 6 different treatment protocols/tumour types. Each problem contains numerical data, a configuration for the optimisation problem, and data required to visualise and interpret the results. The data is stored as HDF5 compatible Matlab files, and includes scripts to work with the dataset. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Opportunities for strengthening aquaculture industry through multicriteria decision-making

In operations research, there are methodological tools included in decision theory that can help decision-makers understand and systematize the decision-making process. Decisions can be classified either as mono-criterial, when only one criterion or goal is considered to evaluate its performance or multicriterial, which takes into account the interaction between two or more goals or criteria that can be in conflict. Natural resource management and finance are some important examples where the implementation of this type of tools has benefited the decision-making process because they allow a number of criteria or objectives to be weighted in a transparent manner to assist when one or more decision-makers are involved. Despite this, its application was not common in aquaculture;however, in recent years, efforts have increased exponentially. This work seeks to identify opportunity areas for development of new aquaculture-related research through the implementation of multicriterial decision-making methods (MCDM). To achieve this, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis was performed to detect MCDM applications that have been implemented in aquaculture industry (24 documents that were grouped into eight applications). Later, this information was complemented through the analysis of selected applications in natural resources management, specifically in fisheries, animal husbandry and agriculture. We propose 23 research topics relevant to the aquaculture industry that can be addressed by the methodologies in MCDM.
