A focusing music algorithm for baseline-free Lamb wave damage localization

The dispersion effect of Lamb waves can cause different degree of phase distortion of array signals, which will make the classical multiple signal classification (music) algorithm no longer valid in Lamb wave based damage localization. At the same time, baseline subtraction and estimation of the number of scattering sources are required in the classical music algorithm, which limits its application. A focusing music algorithm is proposed for baseline-free Lamb wave damage localization on isotropic materials. Based on the virtual time reversal technique, the dispersive wave packets adaptively back propagate according to their respective propagation distances so that the dispersion can be completely compensated and focusing signals are obtained. Wave packet truncation is implemented on the focusing signals and then let the truncated signals forward propagate with the group velocity at center frequency. The two operations, back propagation and forward propagation, can compensate the dispersion effect and avoid estimating of the number of scattering sources as well as baseline subtraction. Experiments are conducted on an aluminum plate to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm. A uniform linear PZT array is glued on the aluminum plate to transmit and receive Lamb waves. Experimental results of the proposed algorithm as well as the classical music algorithm are given and compared. The comparison verifies the effectiveness of the proposed focusing music algorithm.

In this paper, the natural frequencies (NFs) identification by finite element method (FEM) is applied to a two degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) planar robot, and its validation through a novel experimental methodology, the Multiple Signal Classification (music) algorithm, is presented. The experimental platforms are two different 2-DOF planar robots with different materials for the links and different types of actuators. The FEM is carried out using ANSYS (TM) software for the experiments, with vibration signal analysis by music algorithm. The advantages of the music algorithm against the commonly used fast Fourier transform (FFT) method are also presented for a synthetic signal contaminated by three different noise levels. The analytical and experimental results show that the proposed methodology identifies the NFs of a high-resolution robot even when they are very closed and when the signal is embedded in high-level noise. Furthermore, the results show that the proposed methodology can obtain a high-frequency resolution with a short sample data set. Identifying the NFs of robots is useful for avoiding such frequencies in the path planning and in the selection of controller gains that establish the bandwidth.

The music algorithm is an algorithm that can determine the direction of arrival (DOA) for multiple radio waves with high precision. In the determination of DOA of radiowaves by the music algorithm, the DOA evaluation function is determined by a large number of the inner product operations between the steering vector and the eigenvector of the correlation matrix corresponding to the receiver noise. A problem from the practical viewpoint is usually how to reduce the computational complexity in those inner product operations. This paper notes that when the antenna is composed only of a circular array with equal spacing, the inner product operation depends only on the angle difference between the element position vector and the Steering vector. Then, a fast operation algorithm is shown, in which the inner product operation is reduced to the cyclic convolution operation, and the computational complexity is reduced using the FFT. It is shown that the computational complexity is reduced by approximately 31% compared to the conventional method, when the array is composed of eight elements. (C) 2001 Scripta Technica

To improve the resolution in the downrange direction in radar cross section (RCS) measurements, the frequency bandwidth must be widened. Therefore, to measure the RCS at high resolution in a limited frequency bandwidth, we Proposed a technique that applies the multiple signal classification (music) algorithm and obtains the profile in the downrange direction. However, an experimental evaluation still has not been conducted in an outdoor RCS test range of an actual electromagnetic wave propagation environment. In this paper, we evaluated this method by positioning two cylindrical or cubic measurement targets as scatterers of radio waves in the downrange direction and conducted RCS measurements outdoors. The results verified an improvement in the downrange resolution of about threefold compared to a conventional Fourier transform and the effectiveness of this measurement method. This study deals with location estimation of the broadband acoustic source in the distributed sensor network. The proposed algorithm is based on the music (Multiple Signal Classification) algorithm, which solves the localization problem in time domain. The broadband source signal arrives at each sensor with different amplitudes and delay times. Therefore, the signals which are reached at the sensors are the noisy versions of the each other. The collected sensor data is called the observation set, and the cross correlation matrix is calculated by using the observation set. The correlation matrix provides a measure of the similarity between each sensor signal and the relative delay time between the received sensor signals which can be determined by using this data. A reference time point is chosen among the received signals and each time delays are eliminated according to this signal after calculating the cross correlation matrix. Consequently, the source location estimation task is performed by music algorithm in time domain. Moreover, the simulation results which demonstrate the performance of the method are given in the paper.

According to the heavy computation and high cost of two-dimensional (2D) multiple signal classification (music) to achieve 2D direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in various complex arrays, this paper proposes a reduced-dimensional (RD) estimation algorithm based on L-shaped uniform array without the need of 2D spectral peak search and secondary optimization. This algorithm makes full use of the structural characteristics of L-shaped array, decomposes the L-shaped uniform array into two uniform linear arrays, and estimates the angle between the source and the X-axis and Y-axis by one-dimensional (1D) search respectively, then obtains the 2D-DOA estimation according to the geometric relationship and uses the maximum likelihood method for angle matching. In this algorithm, the time-consuming 2D search is transformed into 1D search, which greatly reduces the computational complexity. In order to further reduce the complexity and improve the estimation accuracy, the root-finding method can be used instead of one-dimensional search. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has higher DOA estimation performance as well as faster operation speed.

In this paper, a new multiple signal classification (music)-based source localization algorithm is proposed to localize a hybrid of near-field (NF) and far-field (FF) sources. The music estimator for localizing the FF sources is referred to as the FF-music estimator. On the other hand, the NF-music estimator is designed for localizing the NF sources as well. In between the processing of these two estimators, the Capon spatial spectrum is exploited to reconstruct a pure NF covariance matrix. The proposed algorithm requires only several one-dimensional (1-D) spectral searches and does not involve any computations of high-dimensional iterative optimization, higher-order cumulants, and parameter pairing. Unlike the existing algorithms, which are derived based on the second-order Taylor series approximation, i.e., Fresnel approximation, of the spatial phase factor, the proposed algorithm is applicable to any-order expansion of the spatial phase factor. Moreover, it works well for non-uniform arrays, whereas the existing algorithms can only be applied to uniform arrays.
