A wideband music algorithm using an improved empirical wavelet transform

The traditional multiple signal classification (music) algorithm is only suitable for narrowband array signals, however for wideband signals, sub-band division is required, most of which are based on preset filters or time-frequency analysis. These methods usually require manual selection of the parameters of the filters, basis functions, etc., according to different circumstances, which leads to reduced applicability. This paper proposes a wideband music algorithm using an improved empirical wavelet transform (EWT), which resolves the sub-band division issue by adaptively constructing a series of empirical wavelet functions to decompose the array received signals. In order to adapt EWT to array signal processing, the spectral division method of EWT is improved by utilizing the spectral mean value and order statistical filter of the array element signals, enabling EWT to uniformly decompose the received signal of each array element. Theoretical research and simulation analysis demonstrate that the wideband music algorithm using the improved EWT enables effective estimation of arrival angles of wideband signals. Due to the utilization of a more refined adaptive uniform sub-band division technique for array signal, the proposed algorithm has the lowest angle estimation error compared to the music algorithms based on short-time Fourier transform, auditory filter, and continuous wavelet transform.

In this paper, we consider a music algorithm for locating point-like scatterers contained in a sample on flat substrate. Based on an asymptotic expansion of the scattering amplitude proposed by Ammari et al., the reconstruction problem can be reduced to a calculation of Green function corresponding to the background medium. In addition, we use an explicit formulation of Green function in the music algorithm to simplify the calculation when the cross-section of sample is a half-disc. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

In this paper, we propose a received signal interpolation method for enhancing the performance of multiple signal classification (music) algorithm. In general, the performance of the conventional music algorithm is very sensitive to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal. When array elements receive the signals with nonuniform SNR values, the resolution performance is degraded compared to elements receiving the signals with uniform SNR values. Hence, we propose a signal calibration technique for improving the resolution of the algorithm. First, based on original signals, rough direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is conducted. In this stage, using frequency-domain received signals, SNR values of each antenna element in the array are estimated. Then, a deteriorated element that has a relatively lower SNR value than those of the other elements is selected by our proposed scheme. Next, the received signal of the selected element is spatially interpolated based on the signals received from the neighboring elements and the DOA information extracted from the rough estimation. Finally, fine DOA estimation is performed again with the calibrated signal. Simulation results show that the angular resolution of the proposed method is better than that of the conventional music algorithm. Also, we apply the proposed scheme to actual data measured in the testing ground, and it gives us more enhanced DOA estimation result.

To improve the accuracy and speed of detecting crystal shape during the growth of Czochralski silicon single crystals, a straight line detection method is proposed based on the multiple signal classification (music) algorithm. First, in order to obtain multi-snapshot signals to meet the music algorithm requirements, we add multiple sets of zero-mean Gaussian noise. These sets of noise obey the same distribution (i.e., zero-mean Gaussian). This supports the generation of multiple images, which are converted into multi-snapshot signals of a virtual sensor array. These multi-snapshot signals are used to construct a far-field model;the tilt angle estimation problem of a straight line is transformed into a search problem, which seeks the direction of arrival in the virtual input sources. Finally, a near-field model is constructed, and the estimated potential offsets corresponding to the tilt angles are calculated to determine the parameters of the straight line. The simulation and engineering experiments show that the proposed method can accurately and quickly detect the tilt angle and the offset of the straight line, and is superior to existing methods.

Continuous broadband lightning VHF mapping array using music algorithm

In order to improve the mapping quality of lightning discharge processes, a mapping approach by applying multiple signal classification (music) algorithm to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of lightning very high frequency (VHF) radiation sources is proposed (music-VHF method) and validated. Based on the principles of the eigen decomposition of the spatial covariance matrix, broadband music algorithm operating in lightning VHF ranges, on arbitrary planar array, is derived. To verify this method, numerical simulations were conducted for testing its performance in localization accuracy, spatial resolution and sidelobe suppression. Field experiments were designed to validate the proposed method, with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a portable radiation source. The proposed method was further applied to map two classical triggered flashes. Temporal and spatial development of the discharge channels from the two flashes could be well depicted, including the upward positive leaders (UPLs), K-events, dart leaders and VHF radiations in subsequent return stroke (SRS). Additionally, comparisons among the proposed method and EMTR-VHF method, interferometer (INTF) technology are conducted. Comparison results show that the music-VHF method performs better in spatial resolution, sidelobe narrowband interference suppression. Moreover, the phenomena of multi-source radiations occurring simultaneously within a single observation window are reported, and their localization results are presented.

The multiple signal classification (music) algorithm is originally used for direction of arrival estimation and frequency identification. music-like algorithms have gained their popularity in structural health monitoring (SHM) owing to their super-resolution characteristic and the virtue of baseline independence. music essentially is a searching algorithm to find the best phase difference matching between the eigenvector from signal subspace and the presupposed steering vector. However, in the guided-wave-based SHM (in plate-like structure, the guided wave is Lamb wave), the dispersion effect will definitely lead to phase distortion. Therefore, Xu et al. presented a focusing music algorithm where the time reversal technique is adopted to eliminate the dispersion in the way of back propagation. Seeing that the phase difference information, which is necessary for music, disappears after back propagation, the damage scattered wave packet, obtained by window truncation, is forward propagated again at the constant group velocity to recover the time of flight information. Nevertheless, the forward propagation process is superfluous from the view of phase matching. In the presented forward-propagation-free focusing music (FPF-F music) algorithm (the simplified version of Xu's work), by revising the steering vector in the form of phase coincidence, the matching relation for music is modified from phase difference matching to phase alignment matching, so that the forward propagation and the steering vector traversal setting for every inspection point are all omitted. The damage localization performance of FPF-F music is verified on the aluminum plate with double through-hole and surface defects under uniform linear and circular arrays.

This paper presents a method for the estimation of frequencies of spectral components in electric signals. Spectral components are an important factor for the estimation of power quality, i.e. Total Harmonic Distortion THD value. Parameters of very common switching transients were determined and analyzed using the music algorithm, representing a parametric method. Proposed method enabled accurate estimation of spectral components of simulated and measured power system signals, even in the presence of noise.

In this paper a music (standing for multiple signal classification) algorithm for locating small inclusions buried in a half-space from the scattering amplitude at a fixed frequency is developed. The underlying application area which motivated this work is the imaging of antipersonnel mines from electromagnetic data, formulated as an inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation. The algorithm makes use of an asymptotic expansion of the scattering amplitude. A derivation of the leading-order term in this asymptotic expansion and its application for designing a music type of algorithm are presented. The viability of this algorithm is documented by a variety of numerical results.

Damage imaging identification of plate structures based on linear array near-field music algorithm

The paper proposes a damage imaging identification method for plate structures based on piezoelectric Lamb waves and the music algorithm, focusing on enhancing the accuracy of damage identification by using the sensing signal mode separation technique, and on the music-algorithm-based damage level evaluation. The mode separation of damage scattering signals is realised by using pairwise geometric symmetry to simplify the processing of sensing signals and improving the accuracy of damage imaging. A damage factor constructed by using the maximum eigenvalue of the sensing signal matrix is proposed, and it is combined with imaging technology to realise the precise locating and preliminary evaluation of damage. A combination of finite element simulation and experimental validation is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that accurate damage localisation imaging can be obtained by using a mode-separated damage scattering signal;the damage level has an approximately linear relationship with the damage factor, which can be used to initially recognise the damage level. Within a certain level of damage, the proposed method has high accuracy and stability, enhancing the effectiveness of the damage identification technology for plate structures based on the music algorithm.
