At first, the radar target scattering centers model and music algorithm are analyzed in this paper. How to efficiently set the parameters of the music algorithms is given by a great deal of simulated radar data in experiments. After that, according to measured data from two kinds of plane targets on fully polarized and high range resolution radar system, the author mainly investigated particular utilization of music algorithm in radar imaging. And two-dimensional radar images are generated for two targets measured in compact range. In the end, a conclusion is drew about the relation of radar target scattering properties and imaging results.

Vector hydrophone consists of conventional pressure sensor and particle velocity sensor, which co-located and instantaneously measures pressure and orthogonal components of particle velocity. In this paper, the DOA of sources are estimated using music (Multiple Signal Characterization) algorithm by a vector-hydrophone ULA (Uniform Linear Array), and music algorithm based on acoustic vector sensor array has been analyzed. The ability of music estimation is also analyzed through the computer simulation. The simulation results indicate that a sharper main beam and higher resolution of DOA estimation can be obtained using music algorithm, and the ability to distinguish multi-source is also improved.

Direction Finding Using a Four-Ray Street Canyon Propagation Model in Presence of Periodic Lamp-Posts for Use in Microcellular Wireless Communication and Angular Estimation

A four-ray street canyon model, including the polarization effect, is considered as the basic propagation model and an array of the periodic lampposts is added within the scenario. Using the MUISC (Multiple Signal Classification) direction-finding algorithm the angle of arrival to the access point is computed in both azimuth and elevation. Through this, the root mean square errors of DOA are estimated in both azimuth and elevation. It is demonstrated that the presence of the lampposts increases significantly the angle of arrival estimation errors. The evolution of the errors is computed by moving the mobile set along and across the street. The channel angular spread is computed and through Monte-Carlo simulations the mean and the standard deviation of the angular spread are computed both azimuth and the elevation domains. Monte-Carlo simulations were used to evaluate the root mean square errors. The resulting values are compared to the 3GPP TR 38.901 measurement model and a relatively good agreement is observed. The method could be used in microcellular wireless communication systems for angular estimation. The main point of this work is the combination of the lampposts with a four-ray street canyon model which gives in results which are near to a real propagation scenario.

Multiple-Object Positioning in N-LOS RIS-Aided Environment: Using a Single-Element Antenna

Estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of signals from radio frequency (RF) scattering objects and determining their location in the absence of a line-of-sight (LOS) channel is a significant challenge in sensing and wireless communication systems. This paper presents a narrowband measurement method that employs a single-element receive antenna and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) to overcome this issue. By utilizing low-cost passive elements that reflect signals with varying phase shifts over consecutive snapshots, RIS generates the necessary linearly independent signal components for subspace-based algorithms. We also propose a novel DOA-based localization algorithm for multi-object scenarios using three RISs and a single-element receiver. Additionally, a method is introduced to mitigate interference from wireless channels that do not interact with the RIS. To evaluate parameter estimation accuracy, we derive the Cram & eacute;r-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for both DOA estimation and localization problems. Numerical results show that the mean square error (MSE) of the proposed DOA estimation algorithm approaches the CRLB as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increases, and the localization algorithm delivers strong accuracy in a moderate SNR regime.

Two-Dimensional Real-Time Direction-Finding System for UAV RF Signals Based on Uniform Circular Array and music-WAA

To address the growing security risks posed by unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activities, this paper proposes a real-time two-dimensional direction-finding (DF) system for UAVs based on radio frequency (RF) signals. This system employs a six-element uniform circular array (UCA), synchronized HackRF One receivers, and a hybrid algorithm integrating the multiple signal classification (music) method with a novel weighted average algorithm (WAA). By optimizing the music spectrum search process, the WAA reduces the computational complexity by over 99.9% at a resolution of 0.1 degrees (from 3,240,000 to 1200 spectral function calculations), enabling real-time estimation of the azimuth and elevation angles. The experimental results demonstrate an average azimuth error of 7.0 degrees and elevation error of 7.7 degrees for UAV hovering distances of 30-200 m and heights of 20-90 m. Real-time flight tracking further validates the system's dynamic monitoring capabilities. The hardware platform, featuring omnidirectional coverage (0-360 degrees azimuth, 0-90 degrees elevation) and dual-band operation (2.4 GHz/5.8 GHz), offers scalability and cost-effectiveness for low-altitude security applications. Despite limitations in the elevation sensitivity due to the UCA's geometry, this work establishes a practical foundation for UAV monitoring, emphasizing computational efficiency, real-time performance, and adaptability to dynamic environments.

The music (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm is employed to detect and localize an unknown number of scattering objects which are small in size as compared to the wavelength. The ensemble of objects to be detected consists of both strong and weak scatterers. This represents a scattering environment challenging for detection purposes as strong scatterers tend to mask the weak ones. Consequently, the detection of more weakly scattering objects is not always guaranteed and can be completely impaired when the noise corrupting data is of a relatively high level. To overcome this drawback, here a new technique is proposed, starting from the idea of applying a two-stage music algorithm. In the first stage strong scatterers are detected. Then, information concerning their number and location is employed in the second stage focusing only on the weak scatterers. The role of an adequate scattering model is emphasized to improve drastically detection performance in realistic scenarios.

Liquids such as water, chemicals, oil, and gas are mostly transported via pipelines worldwide. It is considered one of the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable methods of transporting oil and gas. One of the major threats to this form of transportation of liquids is leakage due to vandalism or deterioration causing economic loss, environmental damages, and loss of lives and properties. To mitigate these threats, several techniques have been proposed. This systematic review analysed the various principles and approaches of pipeline leakage detection and monitoring. Furthermore, relevant standard, taxonomy of different methods of monitoring, and leakage detection of oil and gas in pipelines were discussed;their merits, performance and limitations were also discussed. Kitchenham literature search strategy was adopted to search relevant academic databases using various principles of inclusion and exclusion criteria to filter unaligned articles. It was found that integrating two or more techniques enhances the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of detecting and monitoring leakages in pipeline. Finally, this review concludes by outlining potential ways for future researchers based on the limitations and findings of the reviewed articles. © The Author(s) 2025.

In order to improve the reception performance of SSR replies in high-density signal environment, a separation algorithm is proposed, which constructs the separating matrix with estimating the direction of arrival of signal. Firstly, determine the number of overlapping signals with the eigenvalues distribution of the measurements. Secondly, reconstruct the mixing matrix with the DOA of signals, which is estimated by peak value searching in music algorithm. Finally, estimate the separating matrix by calculating the Moore-Penrose inverse of the reconstructed mixing matrix to separate the overlapping signals. Simulation is done based on uniform linear array with 6 elements. The results show that the proposed separation algorithm can achieve more than 90 percent success rate to separate two short Mode S replies, and the separating performance is similar to independent component analysis algorithm better than projection algorithm. The amount of calculation is less than 10 percent of ICA algorithm, so the proposed separation algorithm is easier to engineering application.

Passive radar based on GSM is a hot research field of new illuminators passive radars, and the wave arrival direction estimation is the key problem for detecting target. This paper designed adaptive antenna array for the GSM passive radar system, and give the complete Matlab simulation to verify the execution of the schedule, meanwhile, the result shows that the music algorithms is high accurate in the wave arrival direction compared with the Capon. All of this made a useful contribution to the research and application of the GSM-based passive radar.
