Vector hydrophone consists of conventional pressure sensor and particle velocity sensor, which colocate and instantaneously measures pressure and orthogonal components of particle velocity. The main advantage of these vector hydrophones over traditional scalar hydrophones is that they make use of more available acoustic information. Thus the ambiguity in the DOA estimation can be removed using the information of acoustic particle velocity of sound field. In this paper, the two dimensional DOA of sources is estimated using music (multiple signal characterization) algorithm by a vector hydrophone ULA (uniform linear array), and music algorithms based on acoustic vector sensor array and scalar sensor array have been analyzed. The simulation results indicate that higher resolution for DOA estimation can be obtained by using vector hydrophones rather than pressure hydrophones which have the same output channels. Element space music algorithm can correctly estimate the two dimensional angle of coherent source when spatial smoothness technology is applied to acoustic vector array.

A new digital signal processing method capable of measuring signals typical parameters, such as channel power, channel bandwidth, and carrier frequency, is presented hereinafter. In particular, thanks to some attractive features of the exploited music algorithm, the method allows the measurement of typical parameters of wideband signals even though they occupy, fully or partially, the same frequency range of other signals, such as interference or noise. This property is relevant for modern telecommunication systems that do not use an own licensed band, but rather share an unlicensed band with other systems, such in the case of those based on the standard IEEE 802.11x. The performance of the method is assessed by means of a number of experiments involving different kinds of desired and disturbing signal as well as different Signal-Interference to Noise Ratio (SINR) conditions. Obtained results show the satisfying reliability and efficacy of the proposed method, thus suggesting its use in the presence of in-channel interference.

A new algorithm which associates (Multiple Signal Classification) music with acoustic scattering model for bearing and range estimation is proposed. This algorithm takes into account the reflection and the refraction of wave in the interface of water sediment in underwater acoustics. A new directional vector, which contains the Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) of objects and objects sensors distances, is used in music algorithm instead of classical model.
