A class of high-resolution DOA estimation algorithms based on hyper-beamforming

In response to the demand for enhanced resolving power in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms and reduced background levels of spatial spectra, we propose a new class of algorithms based on hyper-beamforming (HBF). This class includes three specific algorithms: hyper-beam minimum-variance-distortionless-response (Hmvdr), deconvolved hyper-beamforming (DHBF), and deconvolved Hmvdr (DHmvdr). The Hmvdr algorithm leverages the phase differences between the outputs from the left and right subarray mvdr algorithms and employs hyper-beam operations to construct a weighting factor that achieves high resolution. Both the DHBF and DHmvdr algorithms develop convolution models for the HBF and Hmvdr, then apply the Richardson-Lucy method to deconvolve beams and extract the spatial spectra. The paper outlines the detailed steps and principles that underlie the high-resolution performance of these algorithms and examines the impact of the hyper-beam index on each. Through simulation results and the water tank experiment, we demonstrate that these algorithms not only lower the background level of spatial spectra and reduce the beamwidth of the main lobe but also exhibit superior DOA resolution.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar recently has attracted the attention of engineers and researchers. MIMO radar performance is based on the orthogonality of the transmitted waveforms. A receiver optimisation method is proposed to suppress cross-correlation rather than finding orthogonal waveforms. The method considers two transmitters and is based on the minimum variance distorsionless response (mvdr) algorithm to minimise cross-correlation while maintaining the level of auto-correlation. Performance is evaluated by simulation using random phase code sequences. The proposed method is well suited for single target tracking, or slow moving target detection.

Joint delay and direction of arrivals estimation in mobile communications

In this paper, we present a novel and precise way of estimating the direction and delay of arrivals in multipath environment for channel estimation purposes. Recently, super-resolution methods have been widely used for high-resolution direction of arrival (DOA) or time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation. The proposed algorithm, called JDTDOA, is applicable to space-time channel estimation for space-time processing systems that employ hybrid DOA/TDOA technology. The estimator is based on conventional MUSIC algorithm to find the DOA and uses a standard correlator along with spline interpolation to find the TDOA of each arrival. In the interest of estimating the channel's characteristics, each direction must be associated with its proper delay of arrival. To achieve this, we suggest a very simple and optimum beamforming by performing maximum variance distortionless response applied to each DOA found. The output at each DOA beamforming process gives the recovered signal from the relevant direction. A correlation is then made between each recovered signals which can be interpolated by cubic spline. The peak in correlation figure indicates the specific delay between the signal arrivals coming from the two considered direction.

In many angle of arrival (AoA) estimation algorithms for broadband signals a-prior knowledge about the impinging signals' bandwidth is required for the algorithms to function. In this paper, we present a new technique for estimating the AoA and the bandwidth of the received broadband signals without requiring any knowledge of the bandwidth of the received signals. The proposed technique consists of a uniform circular array (UCA) followed by a transversal filter. It employs variable bandwidth spatial vectors along with the signal to thermal noise ratio (STNR) estimator to estimate the AoA and the bandwidth of the received signals simultaneously. The simulation results illustrate the capabilities of the proposed technique in estimating not only the elevation and the azimuth of the impinging signals with different bandwidths, but also the bandwidths of these received signals.

The industrial demands for accurate localization systems have been rapidly increasing after the introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept. Self localization and tracking transmitting sources are considered essential parts of IoT applications. In this paper we studied the possibility of applying angle of arrival (AoA) estimations to localize an IoT transceiver device in an indoor environment. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive probabilistic model which works on top of the AoA estimation technique to improve the localization accuracy. The experimental results show the potential of using AoA-based localization for indoor environments. The results furthermore show that the proposed adaptive probabilistic model outperforms the traditional static probabilistic model in terms of the localization accuracy and the stability of the position estimate.

Occurrence of partial discharges (PD) is one of the basic criteria of high voltage devices insulation evaluation. Precise PD source location is crucial for undertaking maintenance of mentioned equipment. This paper concerns the issue of partial discharges sources location using phased rectangular arrays technique and high-resolution direction of arrival estimation technology. In addition to the theoretical assumptions of both techniques, the simulation result, in which an Uniform Rectangular Array (URA) was used for registration of the electromagnetic signals generated by defects in power transformer insulation system, were shown. To estimate the Direction of Arrival (DOA) of electromagnetic signals, that propagate from the discharge-generating defect to the transducer array installed on transformer tank, Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (mvdr) algorithm was chosen. The location of defect was determined using two intersecting lines defined by the DOAs from two URAs. With the ability to locate multisource discharges (even at very low signal to noise ratio - SNR), the adopted solution has advantages over conventional techniques.

This paper put forward a comparison between Power inversion algorithm and mvdr algorithm used in the STAP-Digital beamforming. The results of MATLAB simulation about this two algorithms show that: PI has almost the same ability in resisting static jams as mvdr with the angle of navigation signals is known;If the jam is a moving one ,mvdr will show its advantage over PI .So mvdr is a effective anti-jamming method.
