This paper presents a new view for PRISMA information visualization tool;this new visualization will provide support for analyzing data on maps. The use of maps will provide a way for geographical data analysis by using coordinates. This paper will describe the new integrated view and main features of the map.

Evaluation of visual aid suite for desktop searching

The task of searching for documents is becoming more challenging as the volumes of data stored continues to increase, and retrieval systems produce longer results list. Graphical visualisations can assist users to more efficiently and effectively understand large volumes of information. This work investigates the use of multiple visualisations in a desktop search tool. These visualisations include a List view, Tree view, map view, Bubble view, Tile view and Cloud view. A preliminary evaluation was undertaken by 94 participants to gauge its potential usefulness and to detect usability issues with its interface and graphical presentations. The evaluation results show that these visualisations made it easier and quicker for them to find relevant documents. All of the evaluators found at least one of the visualisations useful and over half of them found at least three of the visualisations to be useful. The evaluation results support the research premise that a combination of integrated visualisations will result in a more effective search tool. The next stage of work is to improve the current views in light of the evaluation findings in preparation for the scalability and longitudinal tests for a series of increasingly larger result sets of documents.

This work investigates the potential of applying a suite of visualisation for query processing in a desktop search environment. While each of these visualizations may not be totally new on its own, we have attempted to add value to each one by endowing it with useful features, and to seamless integrate them to allow easy switching of views, thereby providing the novelty in this work to create a potentially useful means to process search results and carry out query refinements and exploration. These visualisations include a List view, Tree view, map view, Bubble view, Tile view and Cloud view. A first evaluation was undertaken by 94 ***. participants to gauge the system's potential usefulness and to detect usability issues with its interface and graphical presentations. The evaluation results were encouraging and showed that these views to be both effective and useful on the whole, and support the research premise that a combination of integrated visualisations will result in a more effective search tool.

San Andreas fault geometry in the Parkfield, California, region

In map view, aftershocks of the 2004 Parkfield earthquake lie along a line that forms a straighter connection between San Andreas fault segments north and south of the Parkfield reach than does the mapped trace of the fault itself. A straightedge laid on a geologic map of Central California reveals a similar to 50-km-long asymmetric northeastward warp in the Parkfield reach of the fault. The warp tapers gradually as it joins the straight, creeping segment of the San Andreas to the northwest, but bends abruptly across Cholame Valley at its southeast end to join the straight, locked segment that last ruptured in 1857. We speculate that the San Andreas fault surface near Parkfield has been deflected in its upper similar to 6 km by nonelastic behavior of upper crustal rock units. These units and the fault surface itself are warped during periods between large 1857-type earthquakes by the presence of the 1857-locked segment to the south, which buttresses intermittent coseismic and continuous aseismic slip on the Parkfield reach. Because of nonelastic behavior, the warping is not completely undone when an 1857-type event occurs, and the upper portion of the three-dimensional fault surface is slowly ratcheted into an increasingly prominent bulge. Ultimately, the fault surface probably becomes too deformed for strike-slip motion, and a new, more vertical connection to the Earth's surface takes over, perhaps along the Southwest Fracture Zone. When this happens a wedge of material currently west of the main trace will be stranded on the east side of the new main trace.

Geologic and geometric constraints on a kinematic model of the Bolivian orocline

The "Bolivian orocline" is the change in trend of the Andes from NW to N near 18 degrees S. Paleomagnetic data have been used to infer that this bend was in part produced by wholesale opposed rotations (15-20 degrees counterclockwise north of the bend and 15-20 degrees clockwise south of it) of the two limbs of the orocline. Besides paleomagnetic data, shortening estimates from balanced cross-sections and variations in crustal cross-sectional area provide quantitative information on rotations and translations. The three sets of data do not agree closely, and therefore only loosely constrain the kinematics of the orocline. A map view kinematic model incorporating the major Faults gives a more detailed picture. The resulting displacement field suggests that movement perpendicular to the orogen increases toward the bend, whereas the component of orogen-parallel movement increases away from it. Only weak rotations are indicated for the bend region. It is speculated that large-scale regional rotations of the limbs of the orocline are markedly lower than previously suggested, probably of the order of 5-10 degrees. Extension, displacement, and block rotation in the larger Gullfaks area, northern north sea: Determined from map view restoration

Numerical map view restoration of the larger Gullfaks area on the western side of the Viking Graben reveals a Late Jurassic apparent displacement field that is slightly divergent, with displacement vectors trending east-northeast-west-southwest to east-southeast-west-northwest. The predominant extension direction is east-west in the Gullfaks field, changing to east-southeast-west-southwest in the Gullfaks Sor area, We relate the divergent pattern to extensional collapse over low-angle extensional detachments in the eastern part of the area. The detachments also explain the anomalously high extensions in this same area, Total extension in the horizontal plane is estimated to be 19% on average in the larger Gullfaks area, whereas it is 42 and 33% in Gullfaks and Gullfaks Ssr, respectively, Block rotations (about vertical axes) are minor (mostly <5 degrees), Calculated fault-slip directions indicate that major north-south-striking faults are mostly dip-slip, whereas accommodation faults or transfer faults, oriented at high angles to the major faults, tend to be oblique slip. In general, numerical or manual map view restoration is useful before choosing and balancing vertical sections. In most of the Gullfaks area, strain is close enough to plane strain and block rotations are small enough for section balancing to be reliable. East-west sections should be chosen across the main Gullfaks field, and east-southeast-west-northwest sections in the Gullfaks Sor area.
