Three-dimensional reconstruction of medical images plays a crucial role in aiding diagnosis by providing comprehensive and accurate anatomical information. However, traditional marching cubes algorithms face challenges in generating precise models due to issues such as noise, blurring, and incomplete data in medical images. In this paper, we propose a novel method that combines Generative Adversarial Networks with Mixup data augmentation to address the problem of thick segmentation layers in three-dimensional reconstruction. Additionally, an improved marching cubes algorithm, referred to as K-Modified marching cubes, is introduced to enhance modeling capabilities for multimodal images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms traditional three-dimensional reconstruction models based on original data and reduces dependency on the number of segmentation layers, offering a more accurate solution for medical image reconstruction.

An implementation scheme of the marching cubes (MC) algorithm was presented for the visualization of mineral deposits. The basic principles, processes and pitfalls of the MC algorithm were discussed. The asymptotic decider algorithm was employed to solve the ambiguity problem associated with the MC algorithm. The implementation scheme was applied to model and reconstruct the surfaces of mineral deposits, using the geological data obtained from an iron mine in China. Experimental results demonstrate the ability of the implementation scheme to solve the ambiguity problem, and illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the MC algorithm in the visualization of mineral deposits.

Interactive marching cubes algorithm for intraoral scanners

This paper proposes a variation of the marching cubes algorithm for intraoral scanners. The intraoral scanning procedure is performed in an interactive manner. During the scanning procedure, the user can check the quality of the intermediate model to decide if further scanning is required. For the scanning procedure, we identify two technological requirements of the marching cubes algorithm: (1) short computation time to minimize the patient's discomfort and (2) efficient generation of an intermediate mesh model by reusing the previous intermediate model. To achieve the required computational speed, we employ the graphics processing unit (GPU)-accelerated hash table to store the truncated signed distance function values, which enables parallel processing of the computational procedure. Further, we develop a local update mechanism to efficiently reuse the previous intermediate model. The proposed procedure was implemented, and the demonstration showed that the proposed GPU-based marching cubes algorithm with the local update mechanism satisfies the two technological requirements of intraoral scanning.

The marching cubes (MC) algorithm is employed to generated triangular meshes for visualizing medical images, sculpture scans and mathematical surfaces. It sequentially traverses cuberille data composed of sampled points of a scalar volumetric data. This paper proposes a propagation-based MC algorithm that uses the open boundary loop concept. The open boundary loop is used to determine adjacent cells for the next iteration of the MC algorithm. After inserting each triangle, the open boundary loop is reevaluated. Simultaneously, it is ensured that all triangles are coherently oriented and there are no holes on the isosurface. Several tests are conducted to determine the performance of the algorithm in comparison with the original MC algorithm. Results from these tests indicate that, for large-scale problems, the proposed algorithm performs better than the original.

Robust generation of the delta volume for the damaged area of a part using the marching cubes algorithm to support additive manufacturing-based part maintenance

A major advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) technology is that a product can be manufactured based on digital models that are generated using a computer-aided design (CAD) system. As a result, AM can be used for both product manufacturing and maintenance. For the maintenance of partially damaged parts using AM, the calculation of the delta volume for the damaged area is required to generate the tool paths for 3D printers. A common approach to obtaining the delta volume is to laser scan the damaged part to obtain a point cloud, which is then regenerated as a mesh model, followed by the use of a Boolean operation with the mesh model for the original undamaged part. However, a major problem with the use of point clouds for damaged parts obtained using laser scanning is that an accurate mesh model is often difficult to obtain due to noise (or outliers) and the deviation of points because of the limitations of the scanner in terms of precision. To solve this problem, the present study suggests extracting a point cloud that corresponds only to the damaged area rather than a point cloud of the entire part. By utilizing the marching cubes algorithm, a method for the robust generation of the delta volume for the damaged area is then proposed. After developing a prototype system to verify the proposed method, delta volume generation experiments are conducted on partially damaged ball valves.

A novel and efficient implementation of the marching cubes algorithm

In this paper, a novel and efficient implementation of the marching cubes (MC) algorithm is presented for the reconstruction of anatomical structures from real three-dimensional medical data. The proposed approach is based on a generic rule, able to triangulate all 15 standard cube configurations used in the classical MC algorithm as well as additional cases presented in the literature. The proposed implementation of the MC algorithm can handle the Type A 'hole problem' which occurs when at least one cube face has an intersection point in each of its four edges. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrate the ability of the new implementation to reproduce standard MC results, resolving Type A 'hole problem'. Finally, the proposed implementation was applied to real medical date to reconstruct anatomical structures. The output of the proposed technique is in WWW compliant format. Orebody-rendering techniques are developed using the marching cubes (MC) algorithm. The shape of an orebody is viv- idly displayed in real time and can be used to guide mining design as well. The MC algorithm has been improved in two aspects. By analyzing the principles of the MC algorithm, as well as the features of the specific application, improvements were developed to: eliminate ambiguities by using a unified isosurface constructing method in the voxels, and improve the operating efficiency of the MC algorithm by incorporating an octree structure. The analytical results of the examples demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal.

We propose an approach, integrating Bayesian level set method with modified marching cubes algorithm for brain tissue and tumor segmentation and surface reconstruction. First, we extend the level set method based on the Bayesian risk to three-dimensional segmentation. Then, the three-dimensional Bayesian level set method is used to segment solid three-dimensional targets (e.g., tissue, whole brain, or tumor) from serial slice of medical images. Finally, the modified marching cubes algorithm is used to continuously reconstruct the surface of targets. Since each step can definitely obtain an appropriate treatment by statistical tests, the tissue and tumor segmentation and surface reconstruction are expected to be satisfied.\

Traditional marching cubes algorithm has the problem of repeating calculation, so that an improved marching cubes algorithm is put forward. Boundary voxel is utilized to find adjacent boundary voxel. According to the relationship of edge and edge sign between boundary voxel and adjacent boundary voxel, we transmit intersection on the common face of the boundary voxel to adjacent boundary voxel. If the edge sign of adjacent boundary voxel is not existed, we change the edge sign of the adjacent boundary voxel simultaneously. In that way, we can avoid doulbe counting of the intersection, which is in two adjacent boundary voxels. The two adjacent boundary voxels have common surface on where the edge of the isosurface lies. During the computation of intersection of edge and isosurface, we only compute the edges whose edge signs are null. At the same time, we make use of edge sign to avoid repeating assignment. It speeds up isosurface extraction. © 2010 IEEE.

Three-Dimensional Geological Modeling Method Based on Potential Vector Fields

With the development of 3D geological modeling, implicit modeling methods have gradually gained popularity. However, existing potential field methods cannot directly represent unconformable geological interfaces. In response, an implicit modeling method based on a potential vector field was proposed, which generates geological surface models through the potential vector field method and generalized marching cubes algorithm, and visualizes the modeling results. An experiment was conducted on the study area of a certain mineral deposit, and a 3D geological surface model with consistency and no topological errors was established, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method for the surface modeling of unconformity geological interfaces.
