An express delivery mode based on automatic parcel machine (APM) is put forward and the delivery system is optimized in this paper. The optimization problem is described as a mathematical programming model, and the improved twice dynamic clustering algorithm and the C-W saving algorithm are developed for solving it. Obtained results show that the mode and the express delivery system have great practical application value and popularized significance.

In response to the growing problems of climate change and global warming, airline companies, as members of the global village, are actively promoting energy-saving and carbon reducing measures, and are strictly controlling and managing greenhouse gases generated in the process of providing high-quality transportation services in an attempt to reduce environmental impacts. As environmental protection has become an indicator of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), this study integrates Activity-Based Costing (ABC) and the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and adopts a mathematical programming model in an attempt to provide the airline industry with a method to lower fuel consumption by reducing the weight of seats in passenger cabins. In order to contribute to environmental protection, future research could develop a variety of energy-saving and carbon reducing programs on the basis of this model. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Web sites are most effective when they meet both the contents and usability needs of their users. Due to tremendous growth of web application, it increases the complexity of web applications and web navigation. Website design is easy task but, to navigate user efficiently is big challenge, one of the reason is user behavior is keep changing and web developer or designer not think according to user's behavior. Designing well-structured websites to facilitate effective user navigation patterns has long been a challenge in web usage mining with various applications like navigation prediction and improvement of website management. Different methods have been proposed to reorganize WebPages to improve users navigation using users navigation data but it still causes disorienting users and increases user's cognitive load. There is a need to improve the efficiency and the performance of a website for effective user navigation. Through this Paper we will propose mathematical programming model to improve user navigation while minimizing alteration to current structure. Optimal solution can be very quickly obtained. We are minimizing unnecessary changes to the present structure of a Web site and hence can be applied for Web site maintenance on a regular basis.

Scheduling tool changes and special jobs on a single machine to minimize makespan

This paper considers a variation of the classical single machine scheduling problem with tool changes. In the variation, two sets of jobs, namely special jobs and normal jobs, are considered. By special jobs, we mean that each special job must be processed within the first prefixed time units of a tool life. To solve the scheduling problem with small size and moderate size, we propose two mathematical programming models. To solve the scheduling problem with large size, we propose three sets of algorithms and focus on the performance of six algorithms based on the studies of a new bin packing problem. Worst-case analysis is conducted. Numerical experiment shows that each of the six algorithms can solve instances with up to 5000 jobs in about 0.5 s with an average relative error less than 4%. Optimal inventory reallocation to customer orders in ceramic tile companies characterized by the lack of homogeneity in the product (LHP)

The lack of homogeneity in the product (LHP) is defined as the lack of uniformity required by the customer in the products. The LHP appears in companies where the final products obtained are not homogeneous, leading to the existence of different references (subtypes) of the same product. This lack of homogeneity is a problem when the client needs to be served through homogeneous units of a product and commit orders are based on planned quantities, whose final homogeneity characteristics are unknown at the time of acquiring the customer commitments. The frequent discrepancies caused by the LHP between planned homogeneous amounts and those actually obtained and available, can prevent the delivery of committed orders. To solve this problem, we propose a mathematical programming model for the reallocation of inventory in Make to Stock (MTS) ceramic tile companies characterized by the LHP that combines multiple objectives. The proposed mathematical model has been validated by its application to a real case of a ceramic company. The analysis of the obtained results indicates significant improvements in the number of orders completed on time and in sales revenue achieved.

Lack of homogeneity in the product (LHP) appears in some production processes which incorporate raw materials that originate directly from nature and/or production processes with operations that confer heterogeneity to the characteristics of the outputs obtained, even when the inputs used are homogeneous. Poor LHP management may have a very negative impact on the customer service level and on the supply chains' operation costs, especially when the customer needs to be served with homogeneous units of one same product. One of the key processes for suitable LHP management is the order-promising process. This work presents a mathematical programming order-promising model for make-to-stock environments with LHP. The model considers two objectives placed within a single objective by the weighted sum method. For the purpose of testing the validity of the proposed model and to evaluate the characteristics of the solutions obtained in different scenarios, numerical experiments based on realistic data from a ceramic tile company have been conducted. The results show that better results are obtained for the defined performance measures if multiple objectives are considered when promising orders than the single objective of maximizing profits. Furthermore, the superiority of the results obtained from the proposed model, if compared with current company practice, proves the model's utility. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Assessing the impacts of economic and climate changes on land-use in mountain regions: A spatial dynamic modeling approach

Future land-use changes are predicted to be influenced by both climate-driven environmental changes and concomitant changes in local economic conditions. Assessing the impact of climate change on ecosystems, and the goods and services that they provide, therefore requires an understanding of the dynamic link between land-cover, ecosystem services and economic-driven land-use decisions. The economic land allocation model (ALUAM) simulates the competition between forest and a range of agricultural land-uses to estimate land-use conversions in a spatially explicit manner at high resolution. Using a modular framework. ALUAM was linked with the forest-landscape model LandClim, and a crop yield model, that simulate the response of forests and crops to changes in climate. An iterative data exchange between the models allows a detailed assessment of the dynamic changes in the provision of agricultural and forest based services. We apply our model to the temperature sensitive inner-alpine region of Visp, Switzerland. Our results demonstrate that land-use is influenced directly by environmental shifts and economic decisions, but are also highly dependent on the interactions between these two components. These shifts in land-use will correspondingly affect the provision of ecosystem goods such as food and timber production. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bi-criteria SDST hybrid flow shop scheduling with learning effect of setup times: water flow-like algorithm approach

In studies on automatic scheduling problems, processing times do not differ according to repetition of job or process sequences so it may also be necessary to consider processing times independent from setup times. While considering setup times, the human factor has an important effect on setup, so by the processing of similar tasks frequently worker skills improve and they are able to perform setup at a greater pace. This fact is known as the 'learning effect' in the literature. This paper deals with sequence-dependent setup times (SDSTs) hybrid flow shop scheduling with learning effect of setup times for minimising weighted sum of makespan and total tardiness. A mathematical programming model that incorporates these aspects of the problem is developed which belongs to the NP-hard class. Thus, because of the intensive computation, we propose a novel meta-heuristic approach called water flow-like algorithm (WFA) which has the feature of multiple and dynamic numbers of solution agents. Various parameters of the problem and the WFA are reviewed by means of Taguchi experimental design. For the evaluation of the proposed WFA, problem data was generated to compare it against a random key genetic algorithm (RKGA). The results demonstrate the high performance of the WFA with respect to the RKGA.

A genetic optimization algorithm and perceptron learning rules for a bi-criteria parallel machine scheduling

This work considers scheduling problems minding the setup and removal times of jobs rather than processing times. For some production systems, setup times and removal times are so important to be considered independent of processing times. In general, jobs are performed according to the automatic machine processing in production systems, and the processing times are considered to be constant regardless of the process sequence. As the human factor can influence the setup and removal times, when the setup process is repetitive the setup times decreases. This fact is considered as learning effect in scheduling literature. In this study, a bi-criteria m-identical parallel machines scheduling problem with learning effects of setup and removal times is considered. The learning effect is proposed using a perceptron neural network algorithm. The objective function of the problem is minimization of the weighted sum of total earliness and tardiness. A mathematical programming model is developed for the problem, which is NP-hard. Results of computational tests show that the LINGO 9 software is effective in solving problems with up to 25 jobs and five machines. Therefore, for larger sized problems, a genetic algorithm for optimization is developed.

Rationing mechanisms and inventory control-policy parameters for a divergent supply chain operating with lost sales and costs of review

We consider a static divergent two-stage supply chain with one distributor and many retailers. The unsatisfied demands at the retailers' end are treated as lost sales, whereas the unsatisfied demand is assumed to be backlogged at the distributor. The distributor uses an inventory rationing mechanism to distribute the available on-hand inventory among the retailers, when the sum of demands from the retailers is greater than the on-hand inventory at the distributor. The present study aims at determining the best installation inventory control-policy or order-policy parameters such as the base-stock levels and review periods, and inventory rationing quantities, with the objective of minimizing the total supply chain costs (TSCC) consisting of holding costs, shortage costs and review costs in the supply chain over a finite planning horizon. An exact solution procedure involving a mathematical programming model is developed to determine the optimum TSCC, base-stock levels, review periods and inventory rationing quantities (in the class of periodic review, order-up-to S policy) for the supply chain model under study. On account of the computational complexity involved in optimally solving problems over a large finite time horizon, a genetic algorithm (GA) based heuristic methodology is presented.
