Improving soil heat and moisture forecasting for arid and semi-arid regions: A comparative study of four mathematical algorithms

mathematical modeling is extensively used for ecohydrological processes because it facilitates data acquisition. However, modeling of soil moisture and heat remains challenging in dry ecosystems. In this study, we examined the performance of four models in simulating hydrological processes in a semi-arid mountain grassland (SMG), and in shrubland forming a transitional zone between the desert and an oasis (desert-oasis ecotone;DOE) in northwestern China. We used precipitation, air temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and other meteorological variables to estimate moisture and temperature at different soil depths. Four methods were used to test model performance, including partial least squares (PLS) regression, stepwise multiple linear regression (SMR), back-propagation artificial neural network (BPANN), and neural network time series. Our results showed that BPANN had the best prediction accuracy and supplied a robust modeling framework capable of capturing nonlinear environmental processes by improving the stability of the weight-learning process. Soil depth in SMG for which model performance was optimized was 20cm for PLS and SMR. Additionally, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have a remarkable applicability compared to other algorithms for increased accuracy in time-series predictions;however, they could not depict soil moisture or temperature dynamics at 160cm depth in SMG, and at 10cm depth in DOE. Using conventional meteorological data as primary predictors, and avoiding the complexity of distributed hydrological models can be helpful in developing a regional capacity for soil moisture and heat forecasting.

Precise measurements and control of the position of the rolling shutter and rolling film in a solar greenhouse

Against the background of the depletion of fossil fuel energy sources and environmental degradation, solar greenhouses represent an efficient and sustainable agricultural production method in China. The precise measurement and control of the position of the rolling shutter and rolling film is not only one of the core issues in the modification of the greenhouse environment in actual production but also the basis for improving the cleaner production efficiency of solar greenhouses. In this study, a mathematical algorithm for the control of a rolling shutter and rolling film was developed and is based on the simplification of the circular arc of the greenhouse surface. The "Liaoshen-IV" solar greenhouse was used as an example to illustrate the calculation steps of the algorithm. Any position on the light surface can be determined by calculating the angle at the bottom of the back wall of the greenhouse so that the position of the rolling shutter and the rolling film can be measured accurately by the angle sensor. Experiments using a scale model with one or two surface segments were conducted to demonstrate the advantages of the control algorithm with regard to the accuracy and stability compared with the existing control method of a time-delay relay. The relative errors of the control algorithm were stable and less than 1%. The use of the algorithm improved the control accuracy of the rolling shutter and rolling film and the average relative error was reduced by 6.37% in the first stage and by 3.40% in the second stage compared with the time-delay relay. The precise measurement and control of the position of the rolling shutter and rolling film in a solar greenhouse demonstrated in this study has great significance for practical applications. The proposed method may result in a reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in greenhouse environments, thereby contributing to the improvement of resource efficiency and a cleaner production. Optimized Exit Location Planning in an Underground Mega Mall Based on mathematical Model of algorithm

Multipurpose buildings that have an underground mega mall require distinguished functional considerations compared to small conventional underground spaces. Thus, this study starts with an assumption that architects' knowledge and personal decisions may not be reliable and valid in a massive multipurpose underground mall, because it is beyond general sense in terms of size and function. Especially, when considering safety issues, an architect's personal subjective decisions should be evaluated with scientific and objective criteria. Therefore, the intention of this study is to present an emergency exit and staircase planning method based on a mathematical model of optimized algorithm. The fundamental notions of the mathematical model and optimized algorithm that this study has developed for architectural planning, practically adapted the theoretical and mechanical principal that has been used in the field of industrial engineering for many decades. Consequently, the developed algorithm was able to prove that it could indicate the most efficient exit/staircase location for a certain space and assign it based on quantitative analysis.

Potential of an algorithm in Assessing Attractiveness of Flowering Plants to Bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and Their Subsequent Protection as Pollinators

Numbers of bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are decreasing in many European countries. Thirty-six species native to Poland are legally protected, and 19 are considered as threatened with extinction. A method for assessing the attractiveness of garden flowering plants for bumblebees was developed in this study. Observations were conducted through the growing seasons in 2011 and 2012 in two botanical gardens located in Wroclaw city, Poland. Bumblebees were observed and recorded on flowers during 30-min observations and determined to species level. An algorithm was used to define the attractiveness (Atp) of visited flowers, including the frequency of flower visits by bumblebees during phenological seasons. The resulting Atp values were assigned to a 4-level scale of attractiveness. In the botanical garden, the most "valuable'' plant species were: Rhododendron catawbiense Michaux, Lathyrus vernus Bentham, Lathyrus odoratus L., Aristolochia clematitis L., Cyanus montanus Hill, Aconitum lycoctonum L., Hosta sp., Spiraea japonica L. filius, Lavandula 3 intermedia Loiseleur-Deslongchamps, and Lavandula angustifolia Miller;and in the Medicinal Plants Botanical Garden there were: Geranium phaeum L., Agastache rugosa Kuntze, Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Cydonia oblonga Miller, R. catawbiense, Monarda didyma L., Aruncus dioicus Fernald, Lavandula angustifolia, Phacelia tanacetifolia Bentham, Origanum vulgare L., and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. The proposed algorithm may be useful in protecting bumblebees, which takes into account their nutritional needs or feeding behavior. Careful plant selection in planning green urban areas with high rates of Atp will likely to contribute to an increase in numbers of bumblebees.

This paper presents a mathematical algorithm that determines the fluid flow velocity vector （direction, intensity and orientation）, based on measured voltages on multi-channel hot-wire anemometer. As the voltage on Constant Temperature hot-wire Anemometer （CTA） is non-linear function of velocity and angle of the fluid, inverse function is also non-linear and has several mathematically correct solutions. In the Laboratory of Non-linear Mechanics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Ljubljana, the authors have decided to try developing multi-charmel hot-wire anemometer with constant temperature at which it is possible to select physically correct solutions from several mathematically correct solutions. The mathematical algorithm works correctly if the range of instrument operation is limited for the value of spherical angles ｜φ｜≤ 60°and ｜ψ｜＇1 ≤ 58°.

Standardization of platelet releasate products for clinical applications in cell therapy: a mathematical approach

Background: Standardized animal-free components are required for manufacturing cell-based medicinal products. Human platelet concentrates are sources of growth factors for cell expansion but such products are characterized by undesired variability. Pooling together single-donor products improves consistency, but the minimal pool sample size was never determined. Methods: Supernatant rich in growth factors (SRGF) derived from n = 44 single-donor platelet-apheresis was obtained by CaCl2 addition. n = 10 growth factor concentrations were measured. The data matrix was analyzed by a novel statistical algorithm programmed to create 500 groups of random data from single-donor SRGF and to repeat this task increasing group statistical sample size from n = 2 to n = 20. Thereafter, in created groups (n = 9500), the software calculated means for each growth factor and, matching groups with the same sample size, the software retrieved the percent coefficient of variation (CV) between calculated means. A 20% CV was defined as threshold. For validation, we assessed the CV of concentrations measured in n = 10 pools manufactured according to algorithm results. Finally, we compared growth rate and differentiation potential of adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (ASC) expanded by separate SRGF pools. Results: Growth factor concentrations in single-donor SRGF were characterized by high variability (mean (pg/ml)CV);VEGF: 950-81.4;FGF-b: 27-74.6;PDGF-AA: 7883-28.8;PDGF-AB: 107834-32.5;PDGF-BB: 11142-48.4;Endostatin: 305034-16.2;Angiostatin: 197284-32.9;TGF-beta 1: 68382-53.7;IGF-I: 70876-38.3;EGF: 2411-30.2). In silico performed analysis suggested that pooling n = 16 single-donor SRGF reduced CV below 20%. Concentrations measured in 10 pools of n = 16 single SRGF were not different from mean values measured in single SRGF, but the CV was reduced to or below the threshold. Accuracy of spot detection and classification plays a critical role in the analysis of ELISPOT data. Differences in staining intensities of spots and their morphological variations make it difficult developing a reliable software application. An image recognition method allowing the automatic detection and classification of round objects (spots) on ELISPOT images independently of the registration conditions was developed. The emphasis is done on objects of elliptical shape, which is typical for a wide range of spots. It can be analyzed by both monochrome and a dual-color version of our software. The method of subdivision of objects into groups is also described which is based on color attributes of spots. less

A quantitative evaluation of the sustainability or unsustainability of three tunnelling projects

There is a perception that tunnelling is sustainable. This is because it occurs underground, and consequently does not significantly interfere with surface or atmospheric processes unlike other anthropogenic activities. However, the tools and assessments used in tunnelling projects to evaluate sustainability in the construction and operational phases are primarily concerned with the reduction of carbon footprint and environmental performance. This does not provide a suitable approach to determining the sustainability of a tunnelling project directly. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the other hand does have this potential. However, it requires two things: (1) a suitable quantitative-based method of EIA;and most critically and (2) a means to evaluate sustainability from the EIA results. Based upon the recent work of Namin et al. (2014) concerning a new EIA methodology for tunnelling projects, this paper applies an established mathematical model of sustainability to the results of the EIA to determine the sustainability or unsustainability of tunnelling projects. The model's application, in the form of an algorithm, evaluates three case studies assessed by Namin et al. (2014). The results are analysed and discussed in respect to the three projects' construction and operation phases. The broader context of the results is then discussed in respect to the use of underground space as a means to achieve sustainability. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
