This article presents a teaching-learning methodology for the course Hydropower and Ocean Power in the Master of Renewable Energy Program at the Technical University of Cartagena (Spain). In line with the famous Bologna Declaration, a new teaching approach is proposed, in order to ensure that students acquire skills related to the ability of analyzing and designing Hydraulic Machinery. The roles of the tutor facilitator, as well as the use of freehand sketches and the matlab programming to optimize the management of commercial CFD packages, are some specific features of the project.(c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we present a novel method to detect the boundaries of wood defects in X-ray wood images using the Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) algorithm based on matlab programming. An improved energy function was designed for the HNN to perform the boundary detection which was formulated, in this paper, as an optimization process that could locate the boundary points of wood defects. The gray value of each pixel in the image was considered as a neuron state of HNN. An initial defect boundary was roughly estimated using Canny Algorithm. Based on the initial states, all the neuron's states updated till the energy function get the minimum value. The defect boundary was identified when the neurons get the final states. The results show we obtain a more accurate boundary using this method comparing to using other traditional methods, and the noises were effectively removed. In this paper, we also find a way to do the boundary detection based on matlab programming.

Potentiostats are one of the fundamental instruments used to study electrochemical reactions as they enable researchers to delve deeper into reaction mechanisms and electron kinetics between redox species of interest. Because multi-channel potentiostats are often costly investments, this work discusses the plausibility of self-developing more affordable single-channel potentiostats as an efficacious alternative option. In this work, I discuss the process and results of self-programming multi-channel capabilities onto software designed for a single-channel potentiostat (Emstat3 from PalmSens BV®) using the manufacturer-provided software development kit with matlab® programming. Successful implementation of the multi-channel functionality was demonstrated within this work as up to four connected potentiostats were able to run separate, real-time measurements on different experimental systems simultaneously. Obtained data from 50 uM and 500 uM concentrations of Zobell’s solution electrochemical cells, a dummy cell, and an insulated resistor using the self-developed software on matlab is reported. Within this work, the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), single-step chronoamperometry (CA), and open circuit potentiometry (OCP) functions of the potentiostat were experimented with. Furthermore, the acquired data was then compared to that from a larger, more expensive potentiostat alternative (Gamry Instruments Interface 1010B) to gauge its accuracy and validity.

Disadvantages of the traditional teaching methods for 《matlab programming Design》 course is analyzed in this paper, and a thorough discussion is also given on its teaching methods. Illustrations given in this paper show that the traditional teaching methods which mainly focus on teachers, textbook and exam will make the students’ learning is lack of freedom, exercise and opportunities for innovation. The idea of project-oriented teaching method which focuses mainly on training students' learning ability and knowledge application ability is presented in this paper. In addition, a teaching project named "Face Recognition System" was also designed for matlab programming course. Finally, we summarize that the project oriented teaching method could effectively improve the overall ability of students and it has great potential in future teaching of matlab programming course.

Markets for nutrient trading, water quality and other ecosystem services are rapidly emerging across the world. A critical need is to improve the relationship between farmers' decisions and their impact on natural resources. One of the basic requirements that links buyers and sellers of ecosystem services is an agreed upon unit of trade and a way to measure it. We develop an agent-based model (ABM) which is designed to formalize the interactions between the biophysics dynamics of the natural resources and the socioeconomic factors. The simulation market builds on ABM paradigms in its concepts and is coded using the matlab programming environment. The result shows that ABM is contributing to research questions in ecological economics areas of land-use change, public auction modeling, market dynamics, changes in owners' perceived yield potential, owners' gold, farming choice and water treatment choice aspects in human decision making and behavior change. An Automatic Determination for Planar Target Points via C-Means Approach in the Terrestrial Laser Scanning Data

Laser scanners have been used in distinct disciplines and different approaches, especially industrial planning, and all three-dimensional (3-D) modelling studies. It acquires 3-D coordinate (x-, y-, z-coordinates) point clouds from the object surface. This scanning process has been automatically done of more than thousand points in a second;moreover, if the scanner has a camera, each point will have colour data as well. In this study, the fuzzy logic approach has been used for the automatic determination of the centre coordinates for data registration points in the terrestrial laser scanning data. The approach model has been selected as a fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm, which is frequently used as a clustering and training method from the point of fuzzy logic. This method has been programmed within the matlab software and the original registration points of target data have been tested. In the end, application results have been shown and compared with the results of conventional method.

A novel framework for intelligent surveillance system based on abnormal human activity detection in academic environments

Abnormal activity detection plays a crucial role in surveillance applications, and a surveillance system that can perform robustly in an academic environment has become an urgent need. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for an automatic real-time video-based surveillance system which can simultaneously perform the tracking, semantic scene learning, and abnormality detection in an academic environment. To develop our system, we have divided the work into three phases: preprocessing phase, abnormal human activity detection phase, and content-based image retrieval phase. For motion object detection, we used the temporal-differencing algorithm and then located the motions region using the Gaussian function. Furthermore, the shape model based on OMEGA equation was used as a filter for the detected objects (i.e., human and non-human). For object activities analysis, we evaluated and analyzed the human activities of the detected objects. We classified the human activities into two groups: normal activities and abnormal activities based on the support vector machine. The machine then provides an automatic warning in case of abnormal human activities. It also embeds a method to retrieve the detected object from the database for object recognition and identification using content-based image retrieval. Finally, a software-based simulation using matlab was performed and the results of the conducted experiments showed an excellent surveillance system that can simultaneously perform the tracking, semantic scene learning, and abnormality detection in an academic environment with no human intervention.

Design of booster shed parameters for post insulators under heavy icing conditions using geometric modelling and the Taguchi method

A generic design approach is presented to optimise the parameters of booster sheds (BSs) installed on post station insulators in heavy icing conditions. This approach is based on geometric modelling and Taguchi method and it allows to improve the electrical performance of the insulators. It deals with geometrical parameters of BSs including their number, inclination angle and diameter. Numerical analyses using geometric modelling, matlab programming and Minitab software were carried out in this study. The presented approach seems to be a good alternative to experimental measurements which are costly and difficult to perform. This investigation shows that the optimised value of BS inclination angle is equal to the upper shed angle of the insulator. Moreover, it indicates that generally the maximum feasible values for the diameter and number of BSs are the best options.

In the latest years, supply chain academics and practitioners have been increasingly concerned with the supplier selection problem. In this paper, a computational system based on 'Fuzzy Extended Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP)' was developed for supplier selection considering risks. Specifically, we aimed to assess the use of the Fuzzy AHP method in supplier selection and to analyze the support of the proposed system to supplier selection considering risks through a practical application in the Brazilian oil industry. For this, the main criteria, sub-criteria, and alternatives for supplier selection were identified and comparatively assessed by expert managers from the focal company.
