While ultrasound testing (UT) with linear transducer arrays is a widely used method in Nondestructive Testing (NDT), the use of matrix arrays is not so widespread in the field. Nevertheless, matrix arrays can be used to do volumetric imaging without the need to displace the transducer. Furthermore, they provide a solution to the lack of resolution in the elevation direction characteristic of linear arrays, and the possibility to steer the beam in every direction in space. In this work, we propose an optimized auto-focusing algorithm to be used with ultrasound matrix arrays for three-dimensional imaging in the presence of interfaces, as is the case in immersion testing frequently used in NDT.

matrix array 3D ultrasound imaging has been facing the dilemma of insufficient acquisition channels. In this paper, we proposed a unique strategy, termed shared-sparse aperture, to improve acquisition efficiency by combining multi-angle random sparse aperture compounding with view sharing. Then we introduced the super-resolution results as constraint of the share window during acquisition process to maximize the valid microbubble localization events and improve the structure continuity of microbubble localization-based super-resolution ultrasound imaging.

We developed a 2D matrix array for later use in transperineal volumetric ultrasound imaging in the context of radiation dose monitoring. In the envisioned applications, radiation-sensitive microbubbles shall induce changes in the (spectral) reflection behavior of ultrasonic waves. To optimize both amplitude and spectral sensitivity, we developed an array with a footprint adapted on the transperineal window and focused on a high bandwidth. Our 1014 element rectangular footprint array (26 x 39) was characterized on phantoms and allows resolutions below 1 mm (FWHM of 910 mu m) even with the simplest possible reconstruction scheme (single transmit 0 degrees plan wave) and DAS beamforming. To allow advanced research on volumetric beamforming schemes, 1 to 1 wiring of all elements to TX/RX channels of our 1024ch electronics has been implemented, introducing some significant challenges to the contacting scheme.

The matrix array probe combined with volumetric plane wave emission imaging provides the possibility of ultrafast 4D imaging. Some exciting studies have emerged in the field of small animal brain imaging. It is worth further explore the contrast performance in other tissues and diseases. In this study, we attempt to explore the performance of matrix array probe 4D ultrafast Doppler in neuromuscular imaging. Moreover, we adopt a sparse control strategy to control 1024 elements using a 256 channels system.

Three-dimensional ultrasound has initially been used to address volumetric imaging for diagnostic purposes and represents the leading-edge technological orientation in both transducer and IC (integrated circuit) architecture and design. However, new applications are coming up like biomarker measurements, preoperative navigation, real time surgery guidance or therapeutic procedures where 3D ultrasound modalities are key but their design objectives may need to be thought outside 3D echocardiography and radiology technological trade-offs. For those new applications, system architectures would need less complexity and imaging performances enabling easier hardware reconfigurability tailored to application-oriented imaging. This paper presents an ongoing development where a large matrix transducer has been assembled with multiple ASIC dies in a reconfigurable way. The transducer has a central frequency of 8MHz, a square pitch of 150 mu m x 150 mu m capable to fully image the upper carotid window thanks to a large aperture of 80x240 elements, resulting in a transducer active footprint of 12x36 square millimeters.

A Novel matrix-array-Based MR-Conditional Ultrasound System for Local Hyperthermia of Small Animals

Objective: The goal of this work was to develop a novel modular focused ultrasound hyperthermia (FUS-HT) system for preclinical applications with the following characteristics: MR-compatible, compact probe for integration into a PET/MR small animal scanner, 3D-beam steering capabilities, high resolution focusing for generation of spatially confined FUS-HT effects. Methods: For 3D-beam steering capabilities, a matrix array approach with 11 x 11 elements was chosen. For reaching the required level of integration, the array was mounted with a conductive backing directly on the interconnection PCB. The array is driven by a modified version of our 128 channel ultrasound research platform DiPhAS. The system was characterized using sound field measurements and validated using tissue-mimicking phantoms. Preliminary MR-compatibility tests were performed using a 7T Bruker MRI scanner. Results: Four 11 x 11 arrays between 0.5 and 2 MHz were developed and characterized with respect to sound field properties and HT generation. Focus sizes between 1 and 4 mm were reached depending on depth and frequency. We showed heating by 4 degrees C within 60 s in phantoms. The integration concept allows a probe thickness of less than 12 mm. Conclusion: We demonstrated FUS-HT capabilities of our modular system based on matrix arrays and a 128 channel electronics system within a 3D-steering range of up to +/- 30 degrees. The suitability for integration into a small animal MR could be demonstrated in basic MR-compatibility tests. Significance: The developed system presents a new generation of FUS-HT for preclinical and translational work providing safe, reversible, localized, and controlled HT.

Objective: Described here is the development of an ultrasound matrix transducer prototype for high-frame-rate 3-D intra-cardiac ***: The matrix array consists of 16 x 18 lead zirconate titanate elements with a pitch of 160 mu m x 160 mu m built on top of an application-specific integrated circuit that generates transmission signals and digitizes the received signals. To reduce the number of cables in the catheter to a feasible number, we implement subarray beamforming and digitization in receive and use a combination of time-division multiplexing and pulse amplitude modulation data transmission, achieving an 18-fold reduction. The proposed imaging scheme employs seven fan-shaped diverging transmit beams operating at a pulse repetition frequency of 7.7 kHz to obtain a high frame rate. The performance of the prototype is characterized, and its functionality is fully ***: The transducer exhibits a transmit efficiency of 28 Pa/V at 5 cm per element and a bandwidth of 60% in transmission. In receive, a dynamic range of 80 dB is measured with a minimum detectable pressure of 10 Pa per element. The element yield of the prototype is 98%, indicating the efficacy of the manufacturing process. The transducer is capable of imaging at a frame rate of up to 1000 volumes/s and is intended to cover a volume of 70 degrees x 70 degrees x 10 cm. Conclusion: These advanced imaging capabilities have the potential to support complex interventional procedures and enable full-volumetric flow, tissue, and electromechanical wave tracking in the heart.

Analysis of characteristics of grating lobes generated with Gaussian pulse excitation by ultrasonic 2-D array transducer

Characteristics of ultrasonic beams generated by two-dimensional periodic array transducers have been analyzed through simulations based on the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld model. An excitation waveform is treated as a Gaussian pulse in the simulations with an enhanced model for a continuous wave. Acoustical fields for focal beams, waveforms and spectra are calculated and compared among Gaussian pulses with various pulse lengths. Theoretical generation conditions for propagation directions of grating lobes with the center frequency of the excitation waveform are derived from the first order term of the delay law for an angled focal beam. The theoretical results show good agreement with the simulations. Furthermore, the theoretical condition expressions are extended for high-frequency grating lobes as a specific phenomenon for short pulse excitation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper aims to show that the form of lateral vibration of piezoelectric ceramics is the main factor in the generation of crosstalk in the piezoelectric transducer arrays, although there are related on the issue of crosstalk work, no thorough studies on the lateral vibration mode. The results presented here are just the beginning on this topic of interest as part of a research focused on the development of transducers for medical applications, where the best performance of the transducers is reflected in better diagnosis.

The use of 3-D ultrasound in obstetrics has undergone dramatic development over the past 20 years. Since the first publications on this application in clinical practice, several 3-D ultrasound techniques and rendering modes have been proposed and applied to the study of fetal brain, face and cardiac anatomy. In addition, 3-D ultrasound has improved calculations of the volume of fetal organs and limbs and estimations of fetal birth weight. And furthermore, angiographic patterns of fetal organs and the placenta have been assessed using 3-D power Doppler ultrasound quantification. In this review, we aim to summarize current evidence on the clinical relevance of these methodologies and their application in obstetric practice.
